“…if you’re not harming anyone else’s experience, you should be able to experience the game in any way you like.”
So much this. I recently played through Mass Effect: Andromeda on “Narrative” mode. It doesn’t remove enemies but makes combat extremely, *extremely* easy - to the point at which in a large percentage of battles, if Ryder never lands a hit, the squad will still triumph. Since XP are shared among the team, leveling is unaffected. I found myself able to concentrate on the story and enjoy the gorgeous scenery while not giving myself a tension headache from having to concentrate on keeping Ryder et al alive long enough to defeat an enemy.
Being able to play an enemy-free game would be a great boon to those who find combat tedious or annoying, or who have physical limitations that make even ordinary combat difficult (I’m thinking specifically of gamers I know who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, for whom simply using the controller can be a challenge that results in dislocated joints, never mind having to use it in an extended boss fight).
Physically and emotionally stress-free gaming? I am all behind that. Thanks for the share, and the tag!!
If you are a game dev, and you include an option of something like “Narrative mode”, for people who want to appreciate your story’s depth, and character and world designs, without necessarily being good at video games… I love you.
sometimes i’ve encountered games that were so easy it wasn’t even worth playing but i’ve also encountered some that were challenging that getting through things often felt like a chore...it’s interesting how there’s a difficulty range that can change the whole experience
