LGBT couple is homeless and needs help!!!

Hey everyone, my partner and I are a gay trans Latine couple and we’re struggling with homelessness right now while we try and find work and a place to stay. We can’t find a shelter that will take us both and our support dog so we’ve been trying to keep sheltered in motel rooms while we search. As prices are higher over the summer, we need $90-100 per day to keep a roof over our heads. It’s especially important for me to have regular access to a restroom as well because of the side-effects from the medication I’m on.

Any help covering shelter or food is greatly appreciated. We are also very behind on some important bills that really need to get covered very soon.

I'm actually super glad we're having a conversation about this. The masculinization of black and brown women, because for years I felt like I endured this unique form of trauma until I realized other people went through the same thing too. And if there's one thing that I'd like to add to the conversation, there seems to be this misconception that this is something that starts at puberty. Like boys tell you you look like a man to hurt your feeling when that's so far from the case.

The first time I was purposefully misgendered was in kindergarten. I was constantly referred to by the masculine variant of my name, I was chased out of the women's restroom, and I had grown adults questioning what my biological sex was before I even knew what the difference was. And those behaviors persisted into adulthood because now if I present as anything less than 100% feminine, people will either compare me to men or animals.

And for myself and for many other brown and black women this is a life long act deliberately intended to humiliate, shame, and other us for the features we were naturally born with and I'm glad we're having a discussion on how harmful it actually is.]

Janelle Monáe comes out as nonbinary

I suppose we have known for some time, but now it is official, the talented music maker and actor Janelle Monáe has told the world that they are nonbinary.

This was on the April 20 episode of “Red Table Talk” (via NBC News), where Monáe said:

“I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary.”

Where did it come from that Fake Fur is bad for the environment? Everything I am finding says that it is better in almost every way than real fur. This is a genuine question.

Faux fur is made of plastic. There is nothing environmentally friendly about plastic. As I motioned before, it also constantly sheds microplastics into the environment. Microplastics not only harm wildlife but also us. They’ve been found in human blood and foetuses. Faux fur also takes thousands of years to break down. Since it’s often used in cheap fast fashion it tends not to last very long and ends up sitting in landfill.

Real fur is a natural material that can biodegrade and doesn’t cause any of the problems that plastic does. Some processes for preserving fur aren’t always the best with the use of certain chemicals, but even then it’s really a very minor issue and still a far better option than plastic. The production of faux fur also uses some pretty nasty chemicals in it’s production which are carcinogenic to humans. People also tend to take better care of real fur garments and keep them for a long time as they’re very durable and long-lasting.

Anything saying faux fur is good for the environment is likely from animal rights groups who have an agenda against fur and will twist facts (or just make stuff up) to push their narrative that real fur is bad.

So as someone who actually tans leather I can tell you all the chemicals required for tanning (depending on the technique you use). My method includes citric acid, salt, tanning powders (mostly potassium alum), degreasers, and oils are all biodegradable. I can tan a hide and leave it outside and eventually it would decay with no harm done to the environment. They used to use formaldehyde and other more caustic chemicals for tanning, but that is no longer standard practice even among most commercial tanneries. So no, it’s not worse than anything you can do to the environment and definitely not worse than the process of creating faux fur. Faux fur is plastic, made from refined petroleum products. It has xylene in it which is caustic and can shed off the faux fur and get into your respiratory system or irritate your skin. A real fur coat isn’t going to slowly poison you or the environment, but faux fur absolutely will 🤷‍♀️

My great grandma was a bomb builder in Cleveland. There’s a restaurant in the city, near the airport, called 101st Bombardiers (I think) that we went to after her funeral. We got into a conversation with the owner about how she specifically wanted us all to go there, and the owner called up the previous owner, her mother, who showed up and told us tales about my grandmother from back when they worked together. I don’t know if there were any women of color they worked with, but knowing my grandmother they would have been fast friends.

Help two struggling disabled roommates!

So things really suck right now and we are struggling. We are two trans folks with disabilities. After having car troubles costing $400, dealing with insurances, and other things coming up that we cannot control, we have to worry about being able to afford medications, doctors appointments, and food. If you can please help us out so we can be able to keep going and trying to surivive! Every little bit counts and is greatly appreciated!
