Victor's Crown by Darlene Zschech
Does he love us? No, no, no is what our circumstances seem to say. We cannot deduce the fact of his unchanging love from the evidence we see around us. Things are a mess. Yet to turn our eyes back to the Cross of Calvary is to see the irrefutable proof that has stood all the tests of the ages: "It is by this that we know what love is: that Christ laid down his life for us" (John 3:16 NEB).
Elisabeth Elliot
in His time
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." [galatians 6:9]
not about me
Yes, Holy Spirit, have your way when you want it and how you want it.
We are not the healers, we are not the reconcilers, we are not the givers of life. We are sinful, broken, vulnerable people who need as much care as anyone we care for… Therefore ministry must be mutual.
In the Name of Jesus, Henri Nouwen
“If you hold on to the handle, she said, it’s easier to maintain the illusion of control. But it’s more fun if you just let the wind carry you.” ― Brian Andreas
Lord, help me be a servant - nothing more, nothing less.
No more pain, no more sadness, No more suffering, no more tears. No more sin, no more sickness, No injustice, no more death.
God be in my head and in my understanding. God be in mine eyes and in my looking. God be in my mouth and in my speaking. God be in my heart and in my thinking. God be at mine end and my departing.
Sarum Primer, 1527
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. [Psalm 143:8]
"Live in such a way that would make no sense if Jesus Christ had not come, lived, died, & risen from the grave."
(Stanley Hauerwas, paraphrased.)
Lord, help me to die more to my flesh so that I can truly live in You.
1 cor 15:31 ...I die daily.
Missionary Story
One of my favorites is the story of William Borden. His father was the president of Borden Milk, a dairy company worth $2 billion - so William was in line to inherit the company and also the fortune. Upon graduating from high school, his parents sends him on a trip to go anywhere around the world as a graduation gift. He decides to go across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Somethings happens in his heart while he is there. He comes home and tells his parents that he has to go back. His father is not too thrilled, expecting his son to take over the company and to live on his father's fortune. His father really wanted him to attend a university, so he obeyed his father's wishes and enrolled at Yale University. He goes to college and throughout his four years, he's constantly thinking about the Muslim people groups he met during his travels and the experiences he had there. And that desire doesn't burn out - it burns brighter. So he graduates college and he still wishes to go overseas.
He is getting ready to go and so many people around him say that he is wasting his life. Right before getting ready to go, he signs over his fortune to his brother and writes in his bible: NO RESERVES. He doesn't want to think in his head that he's got all this money back home. Yet so many people say he's going to be back soon. He goes out and buys a one-way ticket and in his bible, he writes: NO RETREATS. He gets his tickets and doesn't have his fortune to fall back on and goes to Africa. He gets sick and dies in six months. He was twenty five years old.
The family collects all his belongings and one of his belongings was his bible. They opened up his bible and they saw the back. No reserves and then the date (couple of weeks before he left). No retreats (a week before he left). There were two more words in there. The date was two days before he died. And it was no regrets.
After hearing this story, I was deeply touched and thought about my life. I want to come to the end of my life and say I have no regrets because I spent my life investing in the fame of God. So many people said to him, "you are wasting your life." If investing in the fame of God is wasting my life, then I want to waste my life on Jesus.
