i’m scared of ending up alone.
It's okay, baby girl
I got you
David: "there's no fear in love"
Joel: so afriad of something happening to Ellie he's literally having heart problems
“It’s okay, baby girl, I got you.”
The juxtaposition of David and Joel in this last episode is just so good.
David calling himself a "father" - wanting to insert himself as a father figure in a way that is completely gross and taints the innocent relationship between a girl and her father. He sees fatherhood as a means of control, as a way to further his own sick fantasies.
Then we have Joel. Who actively pushes away the role of father because he's so scared he won't be able to protect Ellie. He's so scared he won't be a good father that he doesn't want her to view him as a figure to look up to because he doesn't believe he will live up to it. His love for her is pure and innocent and healing.
Ellie killing David and running into Joel's arms is SO IMPORTANT. Joel finally accepting Ellie as his daughter, accepting that she chooses him as her protector. Despite the fact that she's proven she is capable of taking care of herself physically, but emotionally relying on Joel? One of the best moments in television history in my opinion.

I'm considering writing a fanfic where Penelope confronts Colin about telling half the eligible bachelor's in the ton he'd never court her, and he feels so bad about it he's like "please let me fix this". But he can't think of a solution so Daphne rolls in and is like "pretending to court worked for me and Simon, it will work for you two as well". So they pretend to start courting, but literally no one pays attention or cares, so it's just Colin and Penelope slowly becoming besties and falling in love.
