“Qualia – You Matter to Me” is a site-specific video art installation exploring our longing for connection through consciousness, nature, symbolism, and hope. Conceived as a visual poem to Nature, the work unfolds in five segments — “Qualia,” “You,” “Matter,” “To,” and “Me” — inviting audiences on an emotional journey punctuated by verses that introduce each part. The gaze is a visual poem, gravitational Qualia: a raw feel, anxiety shaped into surrealism, mythology, a nightmare turned fantasy, spontaneous solidarity, feelings of solitude, suspension, an embrace, the beginning of a smile, a hand falling and rising again, time and the fates symbolizing the interconnectedness of the past, present, and future in the tapestry of life. Underneath these mirrored imageries lie many stories about limits, freedom and self-perception.

Documentary Campana Brothers by Fernando and Humberto This documentary tells the story of Fernando and Humberto Campana through a narrative of affection, investigating the references and life experiences that gave the work of the duo a prominent place in the world of design in Brazil and abroad. Composed by the brothers themselves via conversations that intersect and complement each other, the film revisits their memories, stories, places and images that influenced the Campanas, while drawing parallels between imaginary and physical spaces, between childhood and adulthood, rural and urban, interior and exterior, exploring moments of individuality and complicity between the two brothers. Very happy to see the Black Rock 40 event from earlier this year featured in Departures Magazine.  This is the shop’s third pop-up shop around the world.  The first was in Venice in conjunction with Kehinde Wiley’s “Archaeology of Silence” exhibition.  The 2nd installation was at Maison de la Culture Douta Seck in Dakar, Senegal and the most recent was at Afro Punk right here in Brooklyn.  More to come!

I went to the first International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Cartagena in 2014.  This piece by Radcliffe Bailey moved me very much, as did so many of the installations.  “Storm at Sea” was the most powerful for me though both visually and metaphorically-this bobbing head in what I have now come to learn was a sea of piano keys.  I was just watching a new HBO documentary called Black Art: In the Absence of Light where he is interviewed.  In it, he explained that he walked past a piano shop that was closing and they were destroying all the pianos.  He salvaged 500 sets of keys which he had no idea what he would use them for but which eventually inspired this piece.  The keys turned into the ocean, memories of his father going out to sea to fish and going so far out. Racked with loneliness, they represent all those who were lost at sea during the Middle Passage.  Very powerful mixed-media, collage artist which seems to be my favorite form of art.  No wonder I am such a big fan of Deborah Roberts and Brenna Youngblood. These patchworks of found objects converge to tell a story.  Bailey said he feels like a vessel for things which pass through him into his art.
