I really appreciate your post about the increasing predatoriness of gambling companies, including (especially?) ones that don't market themselves like 'traditional' gambling.

I hope this isn't too silly a question, but what do you think about hedging against negative outcomes by betting on them? I don't want to support companies like Polymarket and Kalshi, but sometimes it's tempting to place a small bet that, e.g., Ken Paxton beats James Talarico, so that if Talarico wins I have something to celebrate and if Paxton wins I at least have a bit of extra money.

I think it unnecessarily puts you at a great risk of being affected by these horrible companies' predatory tactics, and can act as a wedge opening the door to gambling addiction.

It is very common to start gambling through small bets with a rationalisation that makes perfect sense to you. Some people do it because they're already watching sports, and a small bet makes it feel more fun or intense to them. Sometimes it's a social activity because a group of coworkers is doing it. Your reasoning is not dissimilar because you're balancing a small loss of money against a potential psychological boost. It feels casual and harmless, when in reality you are allowing a very serious opportunity for exploitation.

These companies want to give you a gambling addiction, they will try their absolute best to make it a reality, get as much money as possible from you, and destroy your entire life. They spend billions of dollars learning how to manipulate you and break your brain. You are not immune to this, and you are not immune to addiction. No one is.

Ultimately you will have the maximum amount of money possible by not engaging with gambling at all. Long term, gambling will only ever make you lose money. Not allowing it to enter your life at all is the biggest available win here.

Also obviously I think gambling on political outcomes and financially contributing to these platforms are both morally wrong, but that's a separate personal judgement.

internalised misogyny (arguably) is the act of perpetuating or upholding the misogynistic and patriarchal systems against women and those perceived as women by someone who has also experienced those systems of oppression and is projecting the harm they have experienced onto others instead of unpacking said harm.

obviously we do not agree on this issue in that trans men objectively do not have any material privilege whatsoever over trans women and i acknowledge this and you do not, but it also seems that you fundamentally do not understand how to interpret data. i will help.

the data we are talking about claim:

trans men make 70¢ compared to the average worker's $1

trans women make 60¢ compared to the average worker's $1

if true (it is not), this would mean trans women make 60¢ compared to trans men's 70¢, or a difference of 10¢.

"10¢ for every 70¢" would mean trans women make 10¢ compared to trans men's 70¢, or a difference of 60¢, which is patently ridiculous and has not been reported anywhere.

there are no "other data identifying the same pattern." this analysis has not been replicated anywhere. there are however quite a bit of contradictory data.

Also we need to talk about the confidence interval. The higher bound of the CI for trans women was higher than the higher bound of the CI for trans men, meaning it's entirely possible that trans women make more than trans men. The study had an appalling poor sample size and questionable methodology. Their 95% CI ranges were unacceptably broad, especially for trans women, due to the aforementioned sampling size problems. This was absolutely not a representative sample and anyone with even a passing familiarity with research methods could spot this immediately.

As always, the Gender Census is getting a great response from Tumblr - 34% of respondents so far! Thank you so much, I am really grateful for all the signal-boosting. 💜 Now that the response rate is slowing down after the initial peak, my main goal is reaching new people and under-represented groups.

The most common country entered is the USA (53%). In the USA over 60% of the population are aged 30 and over. [Source.] In the Gender Census at the moment it's 25%, and the average age is only 26. Since the main way we reach new people is by word-of-mouth, the survey needs your help.

The following are really effective for getting the word out:

Flyers! On noticeboards, on tables, in eBay parcels, etc. Printable PDF here, or Google Doc here for easy copying and editing. This is a top method for reaching people who aren't super-online.

Sharing this Facebook post in local LGBTQ+ groups. Facebook is particularly good for reaching under-represented age groups.

WhatsApp forwarding. We have a WhatsApp channel here with regular shareable posts that you can drop into LGBTQ+ groups or share one-on-one.
