Look, I have no idea what’s coming next after Prickly Pair, but I would love it if something like this happened lol
And there were several Linkin Park songs I considered for whatever Steven’s singing might sound like but ultimately I went with Given Up because it’s so unapologetically miserable and angry which are two feelings Steven desperately tries to cover up.
Also, it felt like a nice juxtaposition between a song that Steven sang in one of the mini shorts (Steven Song Time) called Still Not Giving Up. Usually when people are depressed, it’s important to try and look on the bright side, but I feel the opposite is true for Steven. His problem is his adamant refusal to acknowledge his negative feelings out of fear that these things make him weak/a burden and he’s ashamed of it, and it’s that unrelenting, virulent shame that’s holding him back from getting better. It’s the insistence that everything’s fine, it’s the need to sugarcoat or soften the pain he’s expressing that doesn’t allow him the move forward, so for him to sing a song without any kind of cushion of positivity or hope would be extremely cathartic for Steven. He certainly shouldn’t be in that headspace forever, but he needs to le it out if he wants to let it go, right?
