Review of Two Crowdfunding Sites: Kickstarter and Indiegogo
There are multiple crowdfunding sites you can use when launching a campaign. There are specialized ones for industries like Samahope for the medical industry and specifically surgeries for those in developing countries. Others like Kickstarter can be used for a variety of “project” based campaigns. The challenge is knowing which site to launch your campaign on. We will be reviewing multiple platforms to provide you with the pros and cons of using them. I asked Socially Conscious Tees to be my guinea pig and they have started a campaign on three different sites: Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and You’ve Got Funds.
Here is what they had to say:
Kickstarter
This is the most popular crowdfunding site and has gotten a lot of press. The biggest benefit of launching a campaign on Kickstarter is the built in community of backers. People that have successfully backed a project on Kickstarter will frequently visit the site to look for the next interesting project. These backers can help you reach your goals, beyond focusing on your own connections. Kickstarter also has an easy set up process that prompts you with specific questions. For a first time crowdfunder this will help to guide you in knowing what to say and what to offer the community.
The downside of Kickstarter is that they have very specific rules regarding what type of campaign can be launched on their platform. Kickstarter itself wouldn’t qualify, ironic or purposeful? Additionally you cannot use them for charitable purposes, this includes donations from the sale of your products. On the technical side they use Amazon Payments for processing funds. Amazon Payments is a pain to say the least Kickstarter says that it takes seven days to become verified but Socially Conscious Tees has been going through the process for two weeks with no resolve. Due to Amazon’s poor customer service there is no phone number to reach a live person and get questions answered. The campaign is not live yet because of Amazon Payments.
Indiegogo
Indiegogo is easy to use and more relaxed on their rules. You don’t have to be a “project” based business in order to use them and they have less restricted product categories. For someone that doesn’t fit in the Kickstarter box they are the next best thing. They also have a large group of backers that are loyal to Indiegogo. They are Google page ranked six while Kickstarter is a seven.
On the technical side they don’t offer you the same amount of prompts that Kickstarter does so it can be harder for a newbie to think of everything they need to say. Instead of entry level their system is set up for someone that has done research and knows more about crowdfunding. They use PayPal which makes it much easier to use their system. They have a verification process that you do online and is completed in under ten minutes. You can launch your campaign the same day with Indiegogo and with their easy social media sharing buttons you can blast it out to your friends. Here is what the live campaign looks like.
Both sites can be effective for launching your crowdfunding campaign. The major difference is that Indiegogo has less rules so you can launch more with them. Kickstarter has the buzz so if your campaign fits, and you can get through Amazon Payments, give them a try. Otherwise Indiegogo is your best bet.
