Name: Regulus Arcturus Black Profession: Heir to the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, considering Politics Pronouns: He/him Alignment: His own Nominally spying on the Order for the Death Eaters, the Order believes the reverse.

Born into the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, Regulus knows that the weight of his great lineage rests upon his shoulders but for that to succeed, there needs to be a world suited to them. Once Regulus was convinced that that was with the Dark Lord - the man he had pledged his allegiance to - but now he knows better. The Dark Lord is nothing more than a traitor to their kind and culture and he (and those who had tricked Regulus into this life) need to be taken down.

Out in the WILDERNESS, with SIRIUS BLACK

Regulus had missed flying. He had missed the speed, the acrobatics, and being able to just exist in the moment. When he played Quidditch, he didn’t have to think about the world’s woes, he wasn’t limited by anything. It was just him and the crowds appreciating his flying (well, more Slytherin, the other Houses never seemed to route for them). He gave a great woop of enjoymeny as he looped through the sky, plumetting torwards the ground before gathering height, speeding towards his destination and Sirius.

They had agreed to a lone flight, giving them privacy from both sides but it was also something that had been greatly enjoyed in their childhood. Regulus didn’t know what their relationship was meant to be now but he knew he wanted Sirius in his life. He knew he trusted him, perhaps more so than anyone else, something he wasn’t sure Sirus entirely deserved but what else were big brothers for? They needed this. They needed a chance to be brothers.

Unable to resist, Regulus did do a tad more acrobatic maneouvers than required as he sped towards the agreed meeting place. Perhaps he should have stopped larking around as he came within eyesight of Sirius but he felt his brother must understand. “It’s been too long since I’ve gone flying! We really should have more opportunities to get out and about!” Regulus beamed in greeting as he moved to hover next to his brother, eyes gleaming and cheeks rosey.

It was a strange feeling to be nervous about meeting your own brother. But that was exactly how Sirius felt as he waited for Regulus to arrive. Once Regulus had been the only person that Sirius completely trusted. Now they felt like strangers. And he knew that that was entire his fault. He had made his choices and he had to deal with the consequences of them. But sometimes he had to wonder if it had been all worth it. Things hadn’t exactly worked out the way he had thought they once might. And instead he had lost who he was in the process.

It all seemed rather dumb now that he thought about it.

But there was no point dwelling on the past. All he could do now was jump at any given opportunity to try and mend the relationship with his brother. And, a chance to go flying with Regulus was never going to be something he would be able to decline. So he waited with his heart racing and it only seemed to settle down once he finally spotted his brother appraching. Fear. That was something else he constantly felt when it came to Regulus. Fear that he was going to be left here standing alone once his brother realised he wasn’t worth the effort.

“I can tell it’s been a while by how excited you seem.” He called out in response to Regulus’ antics but still a smile spread across his face regardless of what his thoughts were. Just seeing that happy expression on his brothers face was enough to lift Sirius’ mood as he rose on his broom to meet the other in the sky. There was a freedom to flying that Sirius had always adored. And he was just glad that Regulus loved it as much as he did. “Hopefully it hadn’t been too long that you’ve gotten rusty.”

"Rusty? Rusty? I Regulus Acturus Black! I was born to fly!" And as if to punctuate this, Regulus leaned aside, spinning on the spot so the earth briefly became the sky before it once more was below him. He grinned. Merlin, it felt good to move in three dimensions again! "I don't think I can get rusty on a broom, it's just..." Regulus pushed his hair back out of his face. "I don't know, it doesn't feel like it's important enough to be part of who I am, but I can't imagine life without it. Probably seems silly..."

Afterall, it wasn't like he could follow a career in Quidditch. He couldn't see mother approving. Vestiges of a dream that he could not follow. Yet with Sirius having agreed to this today...

He Sirius a nervous smile as the bold Black exterior faultered. "But now things are calming down, now that we're... not on opposing sides, perhaps we can do this more? More than just today, I mean. We... I used to love our games. The silly little challenges we'd set ourselves on our brooms, and the little wild stories we'd have in our breaks between flights." It turned out that it was incredibly hard to say that he'd missed Sirius. That he'd missed having his brother. His eyes nervously flickered down to his broom as nerves settled in. His words seemed childish and he didn't want Sirius to see him as a kid, the baby brother that he got saddled with. Afterall, they had grown, they'd lived through war and come out alive. Yet, they'd been so young when things had all started to go sallow. Was it wrong to want that easy brotherhood back? Regulus swallowed.

"Or perhaps go and get a firewhisky or a beer next time. Whatever you're into...?" He lifted his eyes to Sirius, hoping to meet his brother's expectations.

Regulus started from his deep thought, blinking wide eyed in the direction of Andromeda which more than admitted his guilt. “Sorry,” He apologised, trying to remeber what they had been talking about before he had become so distracted. Memoey failed him and Regulus sighed. “You know, you’d think being a man of leisure, I’d have had plenty of time perfecting becoming the perfection conversationalist but it seems that I just end up getting lost in thought. Perhaps I should consider a career. I think I’d make a rather spectacular politician, although I doubt that Nypmphadora would find me any less dull and tedious.” He put on a smile and hoped that his comment would hit the right mark, not deviating too greatly and having at least a sprinkling of humour.

“No need to apologize,” Andromeda hummed. She didn’t mind minimal conversation, able to appreciate shared silence. It was being left alone with her thoughts that was becoming problematic since they were growing more depressing the longer she was stuck with her mother. “Oh I doubt it,” Andy admitted with a laugh. “We already know they have decided Sirius is the most exciting one of the family. Everyone else pales in comparison, myself included.”

Regulus sniffed at the mention of Sirius getting to be the exciting one in Nymphadora's eyes. It hardly seemed fair, he always had to play second fiddle to his brother, but in this, they might be right. Sirius was always going to be the more exciting of the two of them. He was loud, strong willed and talented. He was everything that Regulus was never good enough to be.

His own talents and points of note were more easily overlooked.

"Well, I suppose if I do put my mind to politics, then I shall have to become the Minister of Magic. Or perhaps I should consider a career at Hogwarts so by the time they attend, I'll be thoroughly able to embaress them," Regulus smirked, forcing himself from his thoughts and swirling his coffee around the cup. "Might not win me points, but could be dreadfully amusing."

“Long day?” Regulus asked, giving a sympathetic smile. He couldn’t quiet understand working (although Merlin knew why he was considering going into politics) but he had had his fair share of people trying to talk to him after a hectic and unsuccessful Quidditch match and sometimes, murder seemed a justifiable solution to someone trying to press you on why it hadn’t gone in Slytherin’s favour.

Regulus smiled at the mention of Draco. The future of the world rested on the shoulders of the next generation and he hiped that Narcissa and Lucius’ little boy would have a fair time of it. Better than their generation at the very least. “Be careful, you might end up having to throw bigger and better parties and that can be quiet the cycle.” He grinned, although he couldn’t blame Lucius - these balls and events were intoxicating.

“Well, you must pass on my compliments to your father. They are quiet the achievement. Very magnificent.”

“With my father to blame,” Lucius admitted with an exasperated sigh. “I understand why he bothers with keeping the business but being his fall guy wasn’t exactly on my list of responsibilities for the day.” It was one of those things that he would have let stay closed and perhaps never reopen, but he wasn’t the one in charge of things.

“We can manage,” Lucius chuckled. “Although you do bring up a good point in not wanting to seem too lavish.” Not that the habit of out-dressing everyone and needing to make sure everyone knew he and Narcissa were the best would have changed anything.

“I can do that, perhaps add in some comment about your having missed his being here for the sake of seeing if that gets him to stop trying to pawn the store off on me.” There was a momentary pause then Lucius narrowed his eyes at Regulus. “Did you put Rosier up to kidnapping one of my peacocks?”

Regulus gave a sympathetic wince as Lucius placed the blame of the situation solely on his father's shoulders. It was often the case, that many of the woes of a pureblood household could be traced to the head of the Houseold, the Paterfamilias. Their word was near decree and was scant disobeyed. "Perhaps next time, your father will make better arrangements? It seems hardly fair or kindly of him to land you with this when there must be scores of magical folk willing to work for the name of Malfoy."

Especially with the world as it now was. Their families had been rightfully set once more at the top of society. Secure. As it should be.

The comment about Lucius' plan to get out of the tedious work that his father had set him brought a smile to Regulus' lips before a quizzical expression occured at the mention of Rosier and the peacocks. "No, I don't recall doing so at all. We admired them, naturally. But put him up to kidnapping one? No, that sounds more like something Sirius would do. "

Gideon had not enjoyed the recent festivities he had been forced to participate in lately and he was reluctant to leave his flat on one of his few days off that week but he needed more painting supplies. He had run out of several of the colors he had been using a lot lately and he needed to get more of them to finish a few of his pieces. Still the fact that he was forced to be out around people left him feeling annoyed.

He was walking along with his hands filled with bags of art supplies when he spotted Regulus. The other man had been enjoyable company at the Malfoy's and he didn't hate seeing him as much as he hated seeing most people this early in the morning. At least Regulus enjoyed looking at art. "Good morning Regulus. Are you out and about to shop or did you just come for coffee?"

Gideon was a welcome sight and distraction from his thoughts and Regulus placed a smile upon his features as he looked at the other man. “Morning,” Regulus nodded, raising the coffee in greeting. “I rarely have errands that I need to attend to personally.” He frowned, realising that perhaps that might sound pretentious. “I guess the latter. I like to go out and get coffee sometimes. Change of scenery and all.”

“You, on the other hand, seem to have been productive,” He said, nodding towards the bag. “Perhaps I can treat you to a coffee? We can discuss mornings and art?” He had enjoyed their conversation in the Manor, Gideon seemed personable and a potential friend (or at the very least acquaintance) who was a step away from what Regulus was trying to forget about himself.

Gideon was brought up short for a moment upon hearing what Regulus had to say. The man obviously didn’t need to run his own errands but it still sounded odd to Gideon upon hearing it. He had never been well off enough to not have to do his own errands. He didn’t mind that though. He liked to go out and about and get things done for himself. Even if hiding from large crowds did sound amazing to him. 

“I would love some coffee. Thank you.” He grinned moving to walk towards the coffee stand. “I was buying things for my art actually. I was running out of the colors I needed. Fabian says that orange is orange but there are a million different shades of orange. The man does not know what he is talking about. I need to pick up some food for my kitten as well but then you can come back to my flat with me if you want. I can show you my latest disaster of a painting. I was trying to get the color of my cats fur just right but it never comes out how it should.”

Regulus moved to keep pace with Gideon as they headed towards coffee, listening to Gideon's discussion. The fascination with orange perhaps became apparent when he mentioned his cat and Regulus smiled, giving a shake of his head. "Ah, an marmelade?" He inquired. "But yes, I can see what you mean about their being many shades for a single colour. The lighting will change how just one colour would appear and that is without addressing the fact that colours can subdivide. I believe I have the right of it?"

He was not an artist. He had never let much of his own interest be taken by ideas about colour. He wouldn't know where to start.

"But, it would be an honour to see your work and perhaps get an understanding about these millions of oranges. Yet, if I may make an inquiry, I have heard that the actual colour does not always matter? It can be less about capturing the right colour but more the colour the artist wishes to convey?"

“I wasn’t aware I recieved a discount,” Regulus answered as he stepped lightly into the shop. They were family and that meant something entirely different and apart to discounts. It was a matter of emotion and needs rather than strict business organisations. His gaze briefly scanned across the shelves, looking at familiar names of ingredients.

The world wasn’t safe and Regulus wanted to be prepared.

“But a delight to see you again once more, dear cousin-in-law. I must congratulate you on throwing such a wonderful party. It was truly a welcome celebration,” He gave a gracious smile, deciding to leave off his shopping now that he had Lucius to talk to rather than some small town clark. “And I must admit that I was rather enamoured of your peacocks, an invention of your own?”

“I should have kept my mouth shut,” Lucius chuckled, keeping to himself that he likely would have charged less than half the price for Regulus. Family loyalty was a new thing for Lucius and five years still didn’t feel long enough to be used to the extended family that was gained from marrying Narcissa. 

“Thank you for attending,” He added with a smile. “Seemed like a good milestone to celebrate but it means we’ll need something bigger for when Draco turns five.” He wouldn’t be planning that far ahead but it did set a precedence for how he and Narcissa intended to continue planning things. “My father’s, actually.” Lucius shrugged. “No idea how he did it but the last four chicks all came out with white feathers. I would have expected some green.”

If looks could kill, the one directed at the door when it swung open would have been deadly. Lucius knew better than to expect no one to show up. In fact, he could have kept the business shut the entire weekend. Abraxas had put his foot down though and Lucius was above last minute searching for a clerk that could be trusted with running the business to the family’s standards.

“If it takes you longer than five minutes to browse, I’ll be subtracting five percent from the discount per additional minute,” He sighed, deliberately remaining behind the counter. It wasn’t like the majority of the people that came through the doors needed a discount in the first place so it was on them if they were displeased by his appearance.

OPEN in Diagon Alley

The world wasn't what Regulus had imagined when he had first signed up for the Dark Lord's cause. Time had prepared him for that. He had perhaps been mistaken, or the Dark Lord had perhaps betrayed their original virtues. Yet, this world was not bad for him. In fact, one might say he more than benefited from the way society had been reordered. Once everything had been made right, did he want things to return? Grey eyes scanned the denizens of Diagon Alley from his perch, hands wrapped around a steaming mug of coffee, trying to figure out just what he believed and just what the world might feel.

“Narcissa was always a master of decorating. She has a good eye for detail, colour. She does her family proud,” Regulus nodded, glancing over at Evan. She was a bond that tied them, daughter of a Black son and a Rosier daughter. It was a subtle complement to both their names, as well as that of Malfoy.

“Alas, I fear Lucius would not see reality, despite being our cousin-in-law,” He cocked his head, watching the peacock. And where would one even keep one, even temporarily? Merlin, this must be what it was like to be Sirius, curse Lucius for the temptation. “Do you think it’s magic? What can be the chance of breeding enough white peacocks to fill a garden? There’ve got to still toss up normal coloured peacocks and that just doesn’t match the aesthetic.”

“Most definitely,” Evan nodded in agreement. “You would have gotten a chuckle out of the amount of times my mother went off about my sisters needing to be more like her.” He nearly rolled his eyes when he admitted that. “I would say I am grateful to have been the heir but it meant both parents dropping hints on behavior.”

Evan pressed his lips together to suppress a chuckle, gaze shifting to the back of Lucius’ head. He studied him a moment before shifting his gaze back to Regulus. “I’m not saying I want to make a scene, but the idea of watching Lucius’ head explode over one of them being temporarily unaccounted for is quite tempting.” His expression faltered after that, the question on the colours having thrown him off. “Magic or someone is getting rich off of dealing the white ones.”

It was well worth a chuckle, even now, to imagine the amount of strife Narcissa had managed to spread through other pureblood families, jealous of her good graces. There were too many who didn't want to follow along in the roles society had outlined although now, Regulus supposed he had cause to question. He did not think of himself as breaking away from tradition (that was the Dark Lord), but with society as it was... He shook his head of that thought. "We all have our reordained roles in society, but to not have freedom can chafe. I find comfort in knowing my place in the world but I can understand for others its a burden." He smiled.

Perhaps, though, there was something about the pressure of society that breed mischief - that or it was his recent reaquaintance with Sirius. Regulus regarded Lucius, mulling over Evan's words. "They are flighted birds, there must be a reasonable chance of the peacocks making their way outside of the grounds, unless Lucius has thought to put some protections against such an event." It was said with an impassive voice, as if regarding the weather but even Regulus could not hide the smallest of smiles at the suggestion.

“Never,” Regulus smiled with a shake of his head. Narcissa had always been close and he did not feel like he ever had need to lie to her. They could be open and honest with each other. It did not mean he would miss the opportunity to rightfully compliment her. “A lot has happened in these past five years. A lot of good.” It was ambiguous enough to be true, Regulus felt, no matter your views.

Well, perhaps not for muggle lovers.

“Alas, perhaps just for the grand anniversaries. Although if I find myself with reason to hold a ball, you must give me advice, with due credit of course. We need more balls, more time to simply be now that we finally have peace.” It was what he yearned for. A chance to stop fighting.

“I mean you don’t need too….” The blonde mused with a little laugh. She’d always had a soft side for her younger cousins. The Black family had always been close, and she couldn’t see that changing. She adored Regulus. “Yes. You are right….” She murmured with a smile. A lot had happened over the five years, but there had been a lot of good things too. Narcissa really could not be happier, and she was excited to celebrate that with everyone tonight. It was going to be a good night.

“Mmm…” She mused with a laugh. “If you ever host I would love to help you plan.” She confirmed with a smile. She would. Narcissa had loved getting to plan the ball tonight. It was one of her favourite things since being a Malfoy, getting to host balls. “I agree….” She murmured with a nod. “I’m looking forward to this season of balls”

The five years had been exhausting and so much had changed. It could have been a life time since he had attended Narcissa and Lucius' wedding. This was needed like a breath of fresh air. He needed a chance to just ignore reality and get to party and be the pureblood prince that he was.

"I should throw myself a birthday party. Twenty-five, quarter of a century. That probably sounds like reason enough to throw a big celebration. " He was about to say more, his mouth open, before he closed it. Would Sirius come to his birthday? It would be the first time since.... He blinked and glanced away. He hadn't realised how much the reality of having his family back affected him. "Or, I don't know, we plan it together and then I pretend I had no idea. Something silly like that," He rubbed the back of his head, trying to make up for his sudden silence.

Of course, that would be another winter, just like now. There was something to be said for the summer balls and parties that went into the drawn out evenings. Sometimes, Regulus liked to imagine if he had been a summer child. He shook his head, smiling. "Although I must admit, I cannot wait until we get to enjoy those long evenings outside. I don't think I've been able to shake that summer holidays feel, even so long after leaving Hogwarts."

Gideon always felt out of place at events like this. He had never known how to fit in with the -=]crowd and this crowd especially was not one that he found himself in often. He would have preferred to skip this party and spend his time painting something in the garden instead. It had been far too long since he had truly been able to paint to his hearts content. He was holding his wand in battle more often than he was holding a brush and that had crushed his soul just a bit the more that this life carried on. He hated the war. He hated that he had to fight anyone. He wanted nothing more than to have never heard of the battes going on around him.

He supposed it was too late to regret his choices now though. He had made good friends in the order and he valued those relationships. He had never felt more a part of something before. It brought him a sense of peace more than anything else could lately. Gideon found himself drifting from the crowds in search of something that would make the trip worth his time when he stumbled uon what must have been an art gallery. At least it had enough pieces of art to be one anyway.

Gideon was making his way slowly through the paintings when he found a familiar face. A hesitant smile came to his lips as he moved to stand next to the other man. “Regulus are you hiding from the party too? Or do you find art really interesting as well?”

Art was something that Regulus greatly appreciated but perhaps did not quiet yet understand. His only experience on the creative side had been the painstaking attempt to recreate the Black Family crest above his bed. It was accurate but it wasn't creative and as it had been pointed out to him, showed rather too much interest in himself to be considered tasteful art. So it was, when the moment presented itself, he had slipped away from socialising to admire the collection that Narcissa and Lucius had put together.

It was much more presentable than his own thoughts on what he might like to acquire to add to Grimmauld Place's own collection.

Regulus frowned, suddenly shaken from contemplating two neighbouring paintings and why something about them seemed to speak of a commonality. He glanced away and saw Gideon Prewett. He was older than Regulus but everyone knew of the Prewett family, purebloods but a lineage that frequently bred blood traitors. Times were different now.

"Admiring the art," Regulus answered before incling his head. "I appreciate artworks but there is much to learn. As someone once told me, I can't just fill my room with various depictions of dead relatives or stylised snakes," He gave a small grin, finding humour in it as much as it had not been a fun truth. "I think I might rather find myself liking landscapes. It can seem like choosing one's own view and I must admit, it can be fun to find features hidden by the artist."

It was always a good idea to surround yourself by useful people, ideally people who didn’t realise that they were going to be useful to you in a few months, a few years time. Plan ahead. Regulus had a rather expensive, unfortunately corrupted, locket now in his possessions with questions as to how it originally came to the Dark Lord and what other possessions of Slytherin might fall to ill use. So he needed someone who dealt with antiques, who had their ear to the ground. A Burke suited the requirements well and a social gathering was as innoculous a time to start making friends.

“Quiet the evening,” Regulus commented, apparently coming up to Burke by mere chance of the shifting crowds. “I must confess, it is a relief to have an excuse to party, not to mention get ideas about potential interior decorations. I’ve always found Lucius and Narcissa to have a particularily good eye.”

Laurent had been zoning out when he heard a voice next to him and snapped back to attention. He needed to stay “on” tonight. Both roles he was playing were relevant. When he realized it was one of his soon-to-be relatives, he plastered a neutral smile.

“Regulus, please to see you.” He tilted his head in a greeting. Then Laurent glanced around at the ostentatious décor. They clearly had different standards of interior design. “They certain have a signature style. You always know when it’s Lucius’ touch. Not many can make that kind of claim.” It was true, at least. He hadn’t lied or directly insulted the hosts. “Have you been wanting for a celebration then? Things have been grim. It is a breath of freshness after a hard few years.”

"Yes, I have been admiring Lucius' peacocks, they are rather marvellous," He said, gesturing to one magnificent bird that he had been admiring not too long ago. They tended to stand about, or waft about, looking rather spectacular. He did not envy the House Elf with the job to clean up after them. It didn't stop him wondering about them.

"I've been in need of a chance to get to relax, just get to exist and figure out what now. I'm looking forwards to peace and a chance to build." He was being careful now. He could not outright criticise the war, but he could admit that this peace they now had was better. "Here's to a better future, hm?" He smiled, raising his flute of champagne in a toast to the future.

Finally the night had placed them together and Regulus smiled at his cousin, taking a sip from his own glass of champagne. “How could I not, when it is organised by you, dear cousin?” He asked, looking over at her. “My congratulations, by the way, on your anniversary. Five years…” He mused. It seemed a long time. A lot had happened during those five years. He had changed. The world had changed. In all honesty, they needed the distraction from reality, a chance to loose themselves in a party. He took another sip.

“Hopefully this’ll be a tradition. You always have always had such an eye for detail and we could certainly do with more glorious balls such as this one.”

“Trying to butter me up Reggie?” Narcissa mused, a little smirk on her lips. She knew he wasn’t. Narcissa had always had a great relationship with her younger cousin. Regulus and Sirius had always been more like brothers to her. They, along with her sisters, and Lucius were amongst her favourite things in this world. “Thank you….. it feels both like only yesterday, but also a life time.” But she wouldn’t change it for the world. She was happy, and that was all that mattered to her.

“I do quite like organising these….” She murmured with a smile. She did, but they were hard work. “I doubt Lucius will want one every year though…. they are a lot of hard work”

"Never," Regulus smiled with a shake of his head. Narcissa had always been close and he did not feel like he ever had need to lie to her. They could be open and honest with each other. It did not mean he would miss the opportunity to rightfully compliment her. "A lot has happened in these past five years. A lot of good." It was ambiguous enough to be true, Regulus felt, no matter your views.

Well, perhaps not for muggle lovers.

"Alas, perhaps just for the grand anniversaries. Although if I find myself with reason to hold a ball, you must give me advice, with due credit of course. We need more balls, more time to simply be now that we finally have peace." It was what he yearned for. A chance to stop fighting.
