Lucius took over the family apothecary since his father claimed he owed him one after allowing the switch in who he married. It is only open on weekends, sometimes not open at all since Lucius is not fully invested in it. It is one of the places where shadier deals can be made but Lucius has minimal interest in that

Lucius does more planning for the Death Eaters than actively participating in field work. He doesn’t like getting his hands dirty.

Abraxas and Tom Riddle are practically besties (not me going I’ll 100% ship it) so Lucius was indoctrinated into the death eater way of life as a child. Having the chance to think for himself has left room for doubt.

“Means we need to take every opportunity we get currently my love.” And that was exactly what Narcissa intended on doing. And she wasn’t about to let her little boy get in the way of her getting what she wanted. Narcissa had always struggle to keep her hands to herself when it came to Lucius. It was how they’d ended up in this mess in the first place. And she really did not think that little Draco was going to be able to stop that anytime soon.

“Sucks for you dear.” She teased, a little smirk on her lips. Whilst she wished he would just stand up to Abraxas sometimes, she understood why he did not. Narcissa thought though that it would be pretty simple for them to just employ someone to run the shop. But she didn’t suggest that idea to Abraxas. She wasn’t stupid. And she’d just wait till Lucius was fully in charge.

“Sounds like a plan” She mused, a smile on her lips as she looked at him. “But only if I don’t lose you for the entire day tomorrow.”

“Mhmm,” Lucius hummed. There was truly no room for complaining since he was just as guilty of struggling to keep his hands off Narcissa. Things working in his favor had only seemed to make things worse. Not big on huge public displays of affection - being he could keep his hands to himself in the public eye - and somewhat shameless when around friends and family.

“It’s awful,” He whined. “He turned down the suggestion of hiring someone outside the family or properly offering a position to Severus.” The latter was understandable if only because it had been Lucius’ suggestion and not Severus’ but it was still an annoying point.

“I will go as far as promising you a half day for tomorrow,” Lucius chuckled. Promises weren’t something he joked around about. Not when it meant having to prove he planned to keep his word. “I may go as far as trying to rope Severus into picking up hours.”

“Long day?” Regulus asked, giving a sympathetic smile. He couldn’t quiet understand working (although Merlin knew why he was considering going into politics) but he had had his fair share of people trying to talk to him after a hectic and unsuccessful Quidditch match and sometimes, murder seemed a justifiable solution to someone trying to press you on why it hadn’t gone in Slytherin’s favour.

Regulus smiled at the mention of Draco. The future of the world rested on the shoulders of the next generation and he hiped that Narcissa and Lucius’ little boy would have a fair time of it. Better than their generation at the very least. “Be careful, you might end up having to throw bigger and better parties and that can be quiet the cycle.” He grinned, although he couldn’t blame Lucius - these balls and events were intoxicating.

“Well, you must pass on my compliments to your father. They are quiet the achievement. Very magnificent.”

“With my father to blame,” Lucius admitted with an exasperated sigh. “I understand why he bothers with keeping the business but being his fall guy wasn’t exactly on my list of responsibilities for the day.” It was one of those things that he would have let stay closed and perhaps never reopen, but he wasn’t the one in charge of things.

“We can manage,” Lucius chuckled. “Although you do bring up a good point in not wanting to seem too lavish.” Not that the habit of out-dressing everyone and needing to make sure everyone knew he and Narcissa were the best would have changed anything.

“I can do that, perhaps add in some comment about your having missed his being here for the sake of seeing if that gets him to stop trying to pawn the store off on me.” There was a momentary pause then Lucius narrowed his eyes at Regulus. “Did you put Rosier up to kidnapping one of my peacocks?”

Pravani also suspected Evan of stealing the peacock not that she would ever rat the man out. She thought it quite entertaining that one had come up missing especially since Lucius had been so determined to not have that happen. She liked Lucius well enough of course but she liked a bit a mischief more than anything. 

“Have you asked Evan if he took your peacock? Perhaps he took it by mistake. Maybe he thought it was his peacock.” She was certain the other man didn’t have any peacocks of his own but finding out any of the men that ran in that group had a peacock wouldn’t surprise her. “I’ve just come for some herbs. Don’t rush me now Lucius. You know I like to take my time.”

“He has two kids,” Lucius scoffed. “What good is a peacock going to - Forget it.” He shook his head after that. Work was meant to be a distraction - not an excuse to keep thinking about revenge. It had been brief too. Long enough to know one was missing yet short enough to have been replaced by the time he got through nagging the first two in-laws to no avail.

It took everything in his power to refrain from biting out a ‘some herbs.’ The words were taken as a challenge and Lucius would do his best to be polite about it. At least, as long as his patience could manage. “Anything specific?”

It was infuriating, the way that Lucius tried to act like he hadn’t done anything wrong when it came to breaking off their betrothal. The two of them were infuriating, him and his stupid wife. They treated her like she was crazy for being angry with them for what they had done, but the two of them thought of nobody but themselves.

Lucius Malfoy was one of the most selfish people in the world, and that was something coming from her. Raising an eyebrow when he mumbled something that she couldn’t hear, she was plenty sure that he was whispering something less than flattering about her. What was it about men that they felt so entitled to treat her however they wanted?

“My son has a cold. I need a mandrake root, Jewelweed, and a Bicorn Horn. I’m also going to need Eucalyptus leaves and Dittany.”

“I am out of Jewelweed,” Lucius admitted, not bothering to turn to grab the other ingredients for her.  Getting a good read off of Valencia had proven tough. It hadn’t been easy before he ruined things but that had certainly made things even worse. That realization made his antics a little awkward but he wasn’t about to go through the motions of gathering everything to be told she didn’t want any of it. He took a deep breath before continuing.

“I can floo home to see if Cissa has some to spare if it is an emergency. Every thing else is in stock.” He paused to look back over at Valencia. “Is your son okay? The last time Draco had one had us both up from all the coughing.”

Narcissa knew that Abraxas would not be impressed if he came in and saw her here. Of course, Cissa could pretend that she’d just come to get some potion ingredients. She did run a potions business after all. But they all knew that Lucius already kept her stock up to date. So, she really had no business being here apart from to distract her husband. Which was the exact reason why she was here today. And she missed him. So, that was a good enough reason for her to be here.

“Do i not get a kiss in greeting? So rude Husband.” She scolded, though the smile on her lips clearly indicated that she didn’t care too much. It was nice to see him, even if she would have much preferred if he had been home. “I mean how many customers have you even had today?” The blonde asked with a laugh. She knew the shop could be quiet over the weekend, so it was not a long shot to assume that nobody had been in yet.

“Because I’m all for closing up, but I know your dad would kill us. Or well you. He doesn’t know I’m here”

“Only because we have a matter of months before he gets old enough to start screaming and getting in between us,” Lucius chuckled then leaned down to kiss Narcissa’s lips. He usually took a more professional approach to things but there was only so much professionalism to be had when he didn’t appreciate being the one entrusted with running the shop.

“Several,” He admitted with an exasperated sigh. “Or should I say more than I had hoped?” Either way, he wasn’t feeling up to dealing with people. He hardly ever was, but who was he to try to voice complaints to the very person that had his life planned out since he found out he was the heir? 

“Lunch it is then,” He sighed after a moment spent thinking their options through. “That way he can’t get on me about tomorrow’s odd hours.”

Pushing open the door to the Malfoy’s Apothecary, a smirk formed on Valencia’s lips when she saw Lucius standing behind the counter. Vincent had been sick with a bad cold all week, and she had told her husband to watch their son while she went to the Apothecary. She could have sent the elves to do it, but she had needed a break from her motherly duties.

“It’s cute that you think that I am here for the discount,” she retorted. “But why am I not surprised? You Malfoys have always been great at breaking deals, haven’t you?” Valencia hated that Lucius acted like he was above it all, like he was above her. He may have been the one to break off their betrothal but everyone had immediately assumed that there was something wrong with her. Men could get away with anything they wanted but the women would always be the ones to cause the problems. She was so tired of it.

She was not in a rush to get home, and she would take as damned long as she pleased to pick out what she needed.

He should have closed the shop down instead of simply grabbing lunch with Narcissa. The thought was one he wouldn’t entertain next time around, opting to follow through on simply closing early. Truly, anything that would have meant not being face to face with Valencia would have been appreciated.

Struggling to speak to her was something that had been present ever since news broke that the betrothal was off. There was no knowing if it was shame, guilt, or some other reason that left him struggling to find words each time he was faced with the woman he would have married if he hadn’t gotten his way. The phrase ‘It wasn’t my fault’ was on the tip of his tongue but he knew that wasn’t the route to take. Not unless he wanted to give her another excuse to berate him.

“A contract I was too young to understand the meaning of when our parents presented it,” He muttered under his breath then shook his head, speaking louder the second time around. “But yes, fine, is there anything specific you were looking for?”

“I wasn’t aware I recieved a discount,” Regulus answered as he stepped lightly into the shop. They were family and that meant something entirely different and apart to discounts. It was a matter of emotion and needs rather than strict business organisations. His gaze briefly scanned across the shelves, looking at familiar names of ingredients.

The world wasn’t safe and Regulus wanted to be prepared.

“But a delight to see you again once more, dear cousin-in-law. I must congratulate you on throwing such a wonderful party. It was truly a welcome celebration,” He gave a gracious smile, deciding to leave off his shopping now that he had Lucius to talk to rather than some small town clark. “And I must admit that I was rather enamoured of your peacocks, an invention of your own?”

“I should have kept my mouth shut,” Lucius chuckled, keeping to himself that he likely would have charged less than half the price for Regulus. Family loyalty was a new thing for Lucius and five years still didn’t feel long enough to be used to the extended family that was gained from marrying Narcissa. 

“Thank you for attending,” He added with a smile. “Seemed like a good milestone to celebrate but it means we’ll need something bigger for when Draco turns five.” He wouldn’t be planning that far ahead but it did set a precedence for how he and Narcissa intended to continue planning things. “My father’s, actually.” Lucius shrugged. “No idea how he did it but the last four chicks all came out with white feathers. I would have expected some green.”

Narcissa very rarely ventured into Knockturn Alley, and she had done so even less now that they had Draco. But, that was also the alley where the family Apothecary was, and so, in order to go to it, she needed to go into the Alley. Of course, one would say she didn’t need to go to the shop at all. But she knew her husband really did not want to work the weekend, and so she had decided that a surprise visit from her and Draco would probably help.

“I suppose you’ll be paying me then if you’re offering discount to something that is already free….” The blonde murmured, as she pretended to browse, before coming out of one of the aisles near the counter. “Hi love…” She mused, siling at her husband, one of her hands gently stroking Draco’s head. The little boy was napping in his comfy position in the baby carrier.

Leave it to Narcissa to immediately turn his mood around. The smile spread across his lips before he could stop it, all too relieved to have family present. “I suppose so,” He admitted with a shake of his head. “But we will have to wait until I get home to make it up to you for the cold greeting.”

Lucius winced when he moved away from the counter, weight shifting unevenly for a few seconds before he finally grabbed his cane from beneath the register. His movements were stiff but he wasn’t particularly bothered by needing to take his time. “Hi love,” He whispered once near Narcissa, gaze shifting from his wife to their son then back again. “And hi Draco.” He reached forward for Narcissa’s free hand and gently squeezed. “How much trouble do you think we will get in if I were to close up early or take an extra long lunch?”

Though Pravani made it a habit to not be seen on Knockturn Alley there were simply things that she needed that brought her to the little shops there. She wasn’t afraid of who she might run into there she was simply not a fan of the dark that seemed to always be present on the little street. Malfoy Apothecary was one of the stores she visited frequently though she was a bit caught off guard by the welcome she received upon entering.

“Now now Lucius do try to be a bit sweeter when speaking to me. You’re going to make me think you don’t like my company and we both know that can’t be true. Did someone steal a peacock from you?”

He wasn’t in a good mood. That much was made obvious from his greeting. The weather simply hadn’t helped with his mood. It was too cold and he was expected to keep the shop open for a few hours. Meaning he had no choice but to follow through on the plan of manning the shop for the day and relying on his cane while doing so. There had been the slightest hope that not-so-nice words would lead toward not needing to deal with people and Pravani was far too quick to shut that hope down.

“Alarmingly not the in-law that I would have expected to,” Lucius muttered in response and ran his hand through his hair. “I have no proof but am almost certain Rosier was behind one disappearing. What are you looking for today?”

There were some people he just couldn’t hide his distaste of, and occasionally, with Lucius, it slipped through the cracks. James closed his eyes for a moment, opening them only to find that Lucius was still there, waiting expectantly for an answer. “Not everyone has a closet full of options, Lucius,” he said, raising a brow. “And I don’t think you’d have liked my showing up in jeans and a t shirt any more. Although, you tell me if I’m wrong.” He managed to take a sip of his drink before adding, “Besides, I’m rather fond of red which would clash quite intensely with all the green.”

James opened his mouth and Lucius was left immediately regretting having engaged. In truth, he should have ignored Potter’s presence altogether but smalltalk was something that would have to happen. Potter was one of two disgraced purebloods the Malfoys were tasked with keeping an eye on. Both rather unwillingly in Lucius’ opinion,  Potter and Andromeda were in luck at having him and Narcissa to deal with instead of Bellatrix and Rodolphus. He needed a moment to focus his train of thought, knowing he could only get away with so many insults flying before it turned into the public having an issue with his personality. “Red would be more acceptable than jeans,” Lucius wrinkled his nose. “Even with the clashing. I’m still uncertain if it’s your expression or the outfit that has you looking like you shouldn’t be here.”

If looks could kill, the one directed at the door when it swung open would have been deadly. Lucius knew better than to expect no one to show up. In fact, he could have kept the business shut the entire weekend. Abraxas had put his foot down though and Lucius was above last minute searching for a clerk that could be trusted with running the business to the family’s standards.

“If it takes you longer than five minutes to browse, I’ll be subtracting five percent from the discount per additional minute,” He sighed, deliberately remaining behind the counter. It wasn’t like the majority of the people that came through the doors needed a discount in the first place so it was on them if they were displeased by his appearance.

HE WISHED HE COULD BE ANYWHERE ELSE. James shuffled uncomfortably in the tux, hands drifting to pockets as he tried to blend into the wall. It was a newfound desire, to want to disappear. Usually he was the center of attention. The light of a party. The darling of a ball. And yet, these days, James would much prefer his own couch, Harry by his side, as they read through the latest muggle book he’d found at an old library. It was a small rebellion, one that gave him little peace, but it was enough for now.

His loneliness didn’t last long, though, and before he knew it, a figure had sidled up next to him on the wall. James looked down into the bubbles that rimmed the edge of his champagne glass and managed a small smile. “Well, I suppose someone was going to find me sooner rather than later. Tuxedos aren’t really meant to blend are they?”

“Surely you could have worn something better,” The sigh escaped before Lucius could stop it, not bothering to mask the look of disgust that accompanied spotting James’ attire. “Admittedly, I am impressed you showed your face at all, but it leaves room to think the next fête Narcissa and I host needs a dress code. Or a requirement of a splash of color. This isn’t a funeral Potter, and I expect better next time.”

There was nothing, in Alecto’s opinion, quite like a good party.

Especially when the party had an open bar. Alecto was making herself quite at home at Malfoy Manor, helping herself to another drink as it floated past on a tray. And there he was! The man of the hour. Alecto’s eyes locked on the back of the wix’s figure. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she watched something akin to relief work it’s way through him, and he seemed at once at ease.

Well, the opportunity had presented itself. It was time to ruffle the peacocks feathers, if for no other reason than the fact that she could.

Alecto strolled up beside him, taking a sip of her drink. Her nose wrinkled as the bubbles hit her tongue, and she let loose a disgusted grunt. “Should’ve known it was bloody champagne.” She pouted into her drink, contemplating it for a moment before her face broke into a wolfish grin. “Oh no, not really. I was just wondering how high a fine there was for your peacocks. You can’t really mean to fine someone if one goes missing. How will you know who took it?”

The relaxed look lasted mere seconds before being replaced with a slight scowl. Nothing unusual but he could never get a good read off of Alecto. It left him planning to tread carefully up until the comment about the beverage.

“As if I would have the best of my wine available for the plebeians,” Lucius scoffed, being certain to keep his voice down. There was an appearance to keep up and he wasn’t about to risk people assuming he and Narcissa skimped out on the bar. They hadn’t anyway but he had stuck to something that hopefully wouldn’t turn into the others not being able to handle their liquor.

“Simple, the whole party gets fined,” Lucius shrugged, expression serious despite not being certain if he was joking or not. “My feathered friends can take care of themselves though so I would hope that doesn’t turn into someone getting fined or pecked.”
