In late 1999, after graduating from Abha Teachers College,Wail al-Shehri began working as an elementary school physical education teacher at the Khamis Mushait airbase. Just five months into his career, he suffered a sudden and debilitating mental illness.
According to family accounts and subsequent intelligence reports, his severe depression caused notable psychological instability and suicidal tendencies, forcing him to abruptly quit his teaching position.
Rather than seeking conventional clinical psychology or medical treatment, al-Shehri chose traditional religious alternatives. He consulted local Muslim clerics, and his primary care consisted of a local sheikh reciting verses from the Qur'an to him in an attempt to alleviate his deep psychological distress.
Hoping a change of scenery and a religious environment would heal his mental health struggles, al-Shehri traveled to the holy city of Medina in December 2000 alongside his younger brother, Waleed al-Shehri. While in Medina, the brothers were intercepted and targeted by al-Qaeda recruiters.
Extremist facilitators leveraged al-Shehri’s unstable mental state and existing suicidal inclinations, redirecting his vulnerability into violent extremism. He swore an oath to jihad at a local mosque, and by March 2000, he had traveled to al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan. There, his psychological willingness to die was formalized into a commercial suicide mission.
