it doesn’t take much to recognize the good intentions in the other’s words—but scarlett still rolls her eyes with that, having to control a wave of anger hat threatens to overtake her. as much as she knows that mar just wants to keep her safe, the redhead is annoyed by the thought of having to stick behind her. the archer’s tired of everyone being so fast at dismissing her abilities and training while using her parents as an excuse for that, so she just shakes her head. “i’m here for a motive.” she doesn’t want to argue—they have other concerns right now, but she can’t stay quiet either. “because i’m capable of being here . so, i won’t hide behind you. i can handle whatever is about to come without getting in your way. trust me.”
— SHE KNOWS SCARLETT can handle herself, but that doesn’t stop mar from trying to take the lead. she knows natasha will have her head otherwise. a head that will probably never be found when natasha is done with her. she rolls her shoulders back, throws a glance to the younger at her comment. ❝ i know you’re capable. does it sound better if i ask you to stick behind me to watch my back? i know you’re great with that bow and could use the cover. ❞ she doesn’t want to undermine scarlett; hell, mar had been an asskicker in her youth, even before the serum. ❝ you know i’m scared of your mom, right? we both know you’re tough, but if you even get a tiny scratch, natasha’s going to make me disappear like it’s a fun magic trick. ❞

“would it stop you from doing it again?” survey says no, if any of maria’s previous encounters with supersoldiers can be extrapolated from. “i don’t see much of a point in trying to stop people from doing things they’re going to do anyway. i just wait around for the chance to say i told you so in the aftermath.”
— A SMALL SQUINT, as if actually thinking on it. ❝ no, ❞ she admits slowly. it was rare that she followed most of s.h.i.e.l.d’s annoying-ass rules, let alone all. she did what she needed to do, whatever it took. or she did what was fun, even if she wasn’t supposed to. she huffs a short laugh, ❝ when have you ever had to say ‘i told you so’ to me? my plans always work out ... eventually. ❞

He let out a heavy sigh. “Do you really think anyone would say something about shooting me?” There were plenty of times where he was sure someone had thought about it. A few times it seemed liked friendly ordinance had barley missed him. “You might even get a metal if you’re actually able to hit me.”
— ❝ as annoying as you are, i’m really not supposed to be shooting at teammates. or marginally decent people. i’m a ‘captain america’ figure, remember? ❞ she wonders what people would say if they found out about the more ‘selfish’ reasons she took the serum to begin with. she just snatches the gun out of his hand. ❝ pretty sure your sister would kick my ass. or dismantle my atoms or something nuts like that. i’m not lookin’ to die in any magic-y way. ❞
while i’m on this mar’s suits kick, i like to imagine she was pissed to find out that the star on her liberty uniform matches the one on the suit that s.h.i.e.l.d made for a newly-unfrozen cap. she’s so mad (read: embarassed) about twinning with him.
hence why she changed to the maverick suit as soon as she possibly could, albeit it took like 2 years.
bonus headcanon: she has no issue with twinning with captain marvel. carol came in with her short hair and her red/blue/gold suit and mar lost her lil bisexual mind.

“Threatening me, flirting with me, trying to kill me, all sounds like a good time to me,” he said with a cocky grin before running off in a blur and returning with both a gun and knife. He would figure she would just get angrier with the shield. “I would suggest the gun, it’s more fun.”
— MAR QUIRKS A brow at him. she doesn’t have the chance to make a witty remark before he’s running off, appearing again in just moments. she’s at least gotten the chance to get her breath back. there’s a gun and knife in hand as he returns, mar’s brows crease. ❝ i’m not going to shoot you. i don’t have the time - or mental energy - to deal with someone nagging me about not shooting teammates. ❞
hc + shield
mar’s father had heard about s.h.i.e.l.d through a friend in the army. while he never got the chance to graduate the academy, mar was determined to follow in his footsteps. the alternative, despite that her grades could have gotten her into a decent college, was joining the marines corp. luckily, after being accepted, she took to the academy’s training like a fish to water.
she was still a fairly junior agent when she applied for the supersoldier experiment. she’d been on a few minor missions, watched over by more senior agents, but ended up on more kind-of ‘desk duty’ after the experiment started, under the guise of ‘taking it easy’ after her tumor diagnosis while ‘undergoing treatment’. it was to keep the secrecy around the project.
she didn’t have many friends at s.h.i.e.l.d, half due to her sticking mostly to herself and half due to the amount of time she spent in the labs with the scientists. she always felt like the scientists saw her more as a test subject guinea pig (which she kind of was), albeit there were one or two that were actually decently nice. for a while, she saw romanoff and barton more as training partners instead of friends, but eventually grew to see them as such and even as teammates; she saw (and still for the most part ‘sees’) fury, hill, and coulson as her bosses.

However long it took them to find a place, it was good to get out of the SHIELD building and actually do things in New York for once. Even with the impressive tech, there was only so long one could spend in one place before it started to feel claustrophobic. She playfully scrunches her nose at Mar’s sarcasm, laughing along with her. At her next comment she nods, brows raising. “Yes! It’s always the same things over and over again, it’s not like they’re teaching us anything new and useful,” she says with a huff. “I don’t know why we have to listen to those things anyways.”
— SHIELD HQ FELT something like a prison. or maybe a zoo where she was the animal getting gawked at. it wasn’t helped by the scientists always trying to get her to preform in some new trial to test the serum. mar shakes her head, ❝ honestly, you’d think they’d let up already. it’s so boring. just point me at a target and let me go; i always get the job done, don’t i? ❞ maybe she didn’t always have a plan, but she’d had yet to fail a mission. ❝ they treat us like total newbie agents, fresh outta the academy. ❞

“Don’t threaten me with a good time,” he said with a slight grin and tilt of his head before take a quick step back to make sure he was out of her range. “I hope none of those ideas involve running.”
— SHE SNORTS A laugh, ❝ ‘good time’, eh? what? you think i’m flirting with you or something? ❞ he steps out of range. luckily for him, since mar had considered attempting to take out his legs with a sweep of her own. ❝ was thinking more of a knife. or a gun. hell, i might even get my shield out, just for you. ❞

WHAT THEY SMELL LIKE: heavier of coconut, lavender; slightly of cinnamon gum, coffee, and sweat.
HOW THEY SLEEP ( POSITION , SCHEDULE , ETC. ): her sleep schedule is f*cked. she stays up late, she sleeps in, it’s all over the place. she’s preferable to curl up with a pillow while sleeping, usually on her side, sometimes with her phone or ipad propped up or her television on.
WHAT MUSIC THEY ENJOY: all over the place; a bit of rock, a bit of pop, a bit of indie. a number of alt-folk and musical songs that she doesn’t talk about and would be embarrassed if people found out about them.
HOW MUCH TIME THEY SPEND GETTING READY IN THE MORNING: not long at all. she doesn’t wear make up, prefers comfortable clothes and isn’t overly fashionable. hence, she’s usually throwing on something casual or her work-out clothes. the longest thing she spends her time on in the morning is trying to find out where she left her comfortable shoes.
FAVORITE THING TO COLLECT: not necessarily a collection, but plates/mugs/glasses with swear words on them.
LEFT OR RIGHT HANDED: right handed, uses her left for only the basics or on the rare occasion that she actually uses her shield in a fight.
FAVORITE SPORT(S): not a fan of sports at all, unless it’s exercise, then boxing or calisthenics.
FAVORITE TOURIST-Y THING TO DO WHEN TRAVELING: food tasting, she will spend more time looking for resturants or street vendors than actually looking at tourist spots.
FAVORITE KIND OF WEATHER: colder weather, not necessarily freezing, just cool and overcast.
WEIRD/OBSCURE FEAR THEY HAVE: heights, sheer drops, confined spaces but more in the form of being trapped by an avalanche/falling building.
THE CARNIVAL/ARCADE GAME THEY ALWAYS WIN WITHOUT FAIL: dart games or bag tosses. she’s not too awful at shooting games either.

Honestly, meetings and statistics and all that technical stuff had never, ever been Katrina’s forte. Any chance to get away from it was welcome, especially when it was this fun. She narrows her eyes in faux contemplation for a moment. “Depends, how long are we going to be walking?” she quips, but before long she’s smiling again. “Sounds good to me. There’s got to be some place nearby. And if it’s not that nearby, then looks like we’ll just have to miss a little more of some boring lecture.”
— SHE’D GET A talking-to from fury or hill or someone later, but it wouldn’t be the first time, and unlikely to be the last. it was like skipping those classes she hated in high school. at katrina’s response, mar’s hand flying to her chest. ❝ oh, you wound me, katrina, ❞ she teases back, quickly laughing after. she yanks her phone out of her jacket pocket, plonking in letters into the searchbar. ❝ well, i mean, i wasn’t planning on going back. it’s all blah-blah-blah anyway, in one ear out the other, you know? ❞
