There is a God. Of that I’m sure. But I’m also sure there’s a devil. And do you know what that devil did? He tore off God’s arms. He hacked away God’s legs. He gouged out God’s eyes. He left him there in his own bloody heap. But he left God’s ears. So he can hear us down here, wailing and screaming, praying to him for help. And there’s a not goddamn thing he can do for us.
Your honeyed silver tongue
Turned to hardened steel
Sharpened on a whetstone
Of disappointments and letdowns
By those who did not know
Just how much they held
Me encanto
La postura de tú cintura
Lo brillo de tus ojos esmeraldas
La anchura de tus labios rojos
Y como se ve tú cuerpo con la lluvia
- Excerpt from “Tierrita Mojada” by Ed Maverick
(Edited for personal use)
The way it was before
When I heard wolves at the door,
Howling, barking, scratching
Jowls dripping and slavering
I’d stand knock-kneed and blathering
Though I had always been hounded
By snarls and snapping teeth
Finally I was surrounded
And finally I found peace
For I felt my final breath was near;
I’d lost the will to fight
Life had never seemed so clear
As it did when I chose to die
Now I go
Once more into the fray
There will be no gentle good night
Now I fight to stay
When once I chose to die
We are passions
Trapped in the hearts and minds of men
Winds rage against the cage of our bodies
Battering at the walls, screaming for release
We are passions
Feigning humanity
Believing each one to be its own
Finding all to be as false as ourselves
We are passions
Trying desperately to become real
We are love and rage and joy and despair
Whirlwinds, hurricanes, maelstroms
We are passions
And we will not be silenced
I want to be wrapped up with you.
As though we were always supposed to be
one body, one heart, one soul.
Limbs entwined.
Eyes locked, ensnared by the depths.
I want to feel the pressure against my own. More than physical.
A substance of spirit.
A piece of you thought to be intangible. Though to my heart, it is sturdy as steel.
Spring Reigns
Winter’s breath grows warm,
A great deluge sprouts flowers —
Watch as life begins
If beauty was light,
she is sunshine so bright,
the eyes must go blind.
Yet a man will find
No need for sight.
For if her radiance was all I’d ever see,
I would live happily.
I’ve given thought, time
And time again
Neither is enough
Though it is all I have left
In abundance
To wait and to think
To spend my waiting time
Thinking
There are places from which I can never flee
Your breath, a hint of a whisper
Sparks flicking across my skin
Distance the breadth of a whisker
Ready to plunge into your sin
To cross the mere inches as miles
And find the bliss in your smiles
The second best use of your lips
Seeking the depth found in your hips
The whole forest sighs
The wind whispers through the trees -
A breath of relief
I sit, trying to think
The thought escapes me
The mind submerged, set to sink
Only the worst to float free
Thoughts burst like bubbles
Reminders of the edge
Reminders of my troubles
I slog, strapped to my sledge
Destruction by my hand
Pain of my creation
Set to inspect a desolate land
Lonely roaming is my station
Her love is a greater gift than the grace of any god
“Those who live are those who fight.”

Anwir Anodyne
The Heaven’s nightly eye
Fixed high within the sky
Sets its gaze like a creator
On creation similarly cratered.
Pockmarked surface still shines
Finds a soul to which it can align
Rocky and cracked yet bright
Then hidden and dark as if in spite.
Upon those changing phases
One finds familiar faces
Those who live under its sight
And share in its pale light.
