          her  kingdom  aches  something  fierce  under  the  cloak  of  twilight,  under  the  suppression  of  an  outer - worldly  threat,  in  the  grasp  of  a  king  who  she  would  not  have.  zelda’s  lips  thin  into  a  line  as  she  mulls  on  the  echoes  words,  hand  crossed  over  the  other  in  her  lap,  blue  eyes  staring  emptily  out  the  window.  the  sound --  lack  thereof  --  is  settling.  the  townsfolk  bustle  and  chatter  fills  the  sky  on  a  day  like  today,  but  the  absence  of  such  white  noise  does  more  than  displace  her.  her  brown  furrows,  as  she  pulls  herself  from  her  perch.

          ❛ elsewhere. ❜     she  states  simply,  giving  the  spirit  a  moment  to  ponder  her  response  before  her  hand  raises  to  point  in  a  direction  outside  of  the  palace  walls.     ❛ she  has  not  taken  him  nowhere  he  does  not  wish  to  be. ❜

THERE  IS  AN  END ,  &  A  beginning ;  that  is  what  midna  has  come  to  accept  during  her  time  in  the  light.  /  but  now ,  it  is  bittersweet.  to  rest  upon  hylian  castle’s  lavish  (  ruined ,  more  like ,  but  she  cannot  fault  them  for  destruction  she  helped  to  cause  )  furniture  &  to  gaze  upon  glimmering  sunset  feels  like  a  blessing  &  a  curse ;  to  have  time  to  think ,  now ,  overwhelms  her.

“  you  can  come  in ,  you  know.  ”  eyes  flit  to  the  door ,  gentle  smile  surfacing  at  the  thought  of  who  lies  across  it.  “  princess ,  you  needn’t  hesitate.  ”  your  heart  &  mine  were  one ,  however  briefly.

     she  carries  the  tray  in  herself,  dismissing  handmaidens  and  servants  in  this  particular  wing  for  the  evening.  midnas  visits  are  so  far  and  few  in  between,  zelda  does  her  best  to  savour  what  moments  the  can.  still,  she  peers  past  midna  for  an  instant   ( she  sees  herself,  and  a  kingdom  cloaked  in  twilight )   but  sets  the  tray  with  two  cups  and  a  kettle  onto  the  nearby  table.  she  stands  straight,  brushes  herself  off,  before  slowly  making  her  way  over.  

     ❛❛  forgive  me.  ❜❜     it’s  a  quiet  response  she  offers,  but  a  genuine  one  paired  with  upturned  lips.     ❛❛  i  thought  you  might  need  a  moment  of  privacy.  i  brought  tea.  ❜❜

              “  heroic  enough  that  i  can  withstand  the  night  chill .  ”  the  tug  of  the  lance  of  ruin  thrums  in  his  heart ,  &  he  thinks  he  remembers ;  a  beast ?  a  creature  of  twilight ?  it  made  no  difference ;  it  had  run  rampant  in  a  village ,  &  he  had  simply  stopped  it  in  it ’ s  tracks . 

              (  not  that  she  needs  to  know  he  used  a  hero ’ s  relic ,  made  of  blood  &  bones ,  that  has  most  likely  cursed  him  until  he  dies .  or  that  he  had  finished  in  less  then  a  minute ;  no ,  he  thinks  that  would  be  a  little  too  much  even  for  hyrule  &  the  goddesses ’  chosen .  )

              “  believe  me ,  majesty ,  your  people  are  not  incompetent  enough  to  put  a  rookie  onto  the  field .  ”  did  he  do  that ,  during  fódlan ’ s  war ?  maybe .  maybe  he  did .  “  i ’ m  more  than  capable  of  keeping  you  out  of  harm ’ s  way ─  if you ’ ll  let  me .  at  this  rate ,  a  man ’ s  going  to  get  his  heartbroken .  do  you  truly  believe  that  ‘ wisdom ’ s  daughter  walks  alone ’ ?  ”

              at  least ─  that ’ s  how  it  seems  to  be .  with  the  solitude  she  dutifully  carries  herself  with ,  it  seems  like  a  sad  dignity  to  uphold .  perhaps  the  triforce  of  wisdom  is  as  much  of  a  burden  as  a  crest  is .  seems  like  they  foretell  the  same  miserable  fate ,  don ’ t  they ?

                          ❛❛  she  will  if  she  wants  to,  with  all  due  kindness,  my  lord.  ❜❜       which  was  not  much,  by  the  queen’s  standards.

                          still,  she  pays  him  with  as  much  regard  as  she  had  before.  the  side - eye  glances,  the  mischievous  upturn  of  the  corner  of  her  lips -----  the  princess  of  twilight  was  a  poor  impression  upon  wisdoms  scion,  that  would  not  escape  any’s  notice.  zelda’s  shoulders  rise  and  fall  ( like  kingdoms,  like  the  gerudo,  like  many  civilisations  under  her  thumb. )  with  a  short  breath.  sapphire  eyes  lull  half  shut,  stopping  in  her  tracks  and  turning  on  her  heel  to  face  her  adversary.  

                          ❛❛  you  catch  on  quickly,  ‘twould  seem.  ❜❜     there.  she  offers  that  genuine  semblance  of  a  smile  shot  in  his  direction.      ❛❛  were  they  so  incompetent,  they  would  not  be  my  men.  ❜❜
