Who Says The Truth Doesnât Hurt? || The Jackson Family and the Sutton Family
{ trulyevanescent }
It took a moment, but finally, the boy seemed to regain himself. That was when the entire Jackson family breathed a sigh of relief.  A dizzy spell, they guessed it made sense. Meeting new people could be hard, right? Hard enough to send someone into a daze⊠Whatever. It didnât exactly matter, at long as he was okay.
The two adults sent cautious smiles his way, but nevertheless, introduced themselves. âItâs nice to meet you, too, Ben. Iâm Demetria Jackson,â It was the woman who stepped up first, a hand held out. She was unusually tall for a woman of her age, she towered over even Ben.
Next, it was the man. Yet again, another abnormally tall human beingâ Who ever believed that they were the Biological parents of tiny, freakishly fun-sized Kat? âAnd Iâm Tobias.â He copied his wife, placing a hand in front of him. It amazed Katherine how no one ever seemed to guess that they were her adoptive parents. She had guessed it at age ten, and years later, she had found that it was true. Two girraffeâs of parents, and a tiny little squirrell of a daughterâ What an odd sight.
âAnd Iâm Oakley!â It was the young boy, jumping into sight to meet the newest stranger that Kat had showed him. The little twelve year-old had shown a great interest in the social life of his new sister.
Keeping the smile present on his lips, Benâs mind continued to race. Frankly, part of him wished Kat hadnât spotted him and come over. A larger part of him was thankful, as now he had the opportunity to ask about his sister. Jumping to conclusions was not exactly something he wanted to do at that moment, so he tried to refrain from allowing his mind to speculate the identity of that sister. It seemed obvious -- anyone might be able to make an educated guess with the information Ben currently had, but that wasnât something Ben was prepared to do. At least, he was trying not to.
Ben took Katâs motherâs hand first, then her fatherâs and finished with an obligatory âitâs nice to meet you.â His hands then returned to his side. His attention moved from the adults and to the young boy and he offered Oakley a smile too. He couldnât blame the boy for being excitable -- being in Lake Grimstone among people who were different in ways that were quite amazing was likely a big deal for the young boy.Â
âHi Oakley,â His blue eyes landed on Katâs brother. âHowâre you liking Lake Grimstone?âÂ

The three Jacksonâs were left hanging as the boy cut of during his own sentence. He seemed to be in some sort or shock, or maybe, just a daze. They were all confused, but none of them dare say a word, except for Kat, that is.
âUhâ Ben?â The brunette attempted to get his attention, waving her hand in front of his face, âYou there? Or are you having a stroke?â She was really worried. This boy was usually full of words. But now he left them in silence.
Kat had no idea what was going through his mind. If she did, she surely wouldnât be as calm as she was now. If she had known, known that she had a family, a wonderful one at that, then she wouldâve been jumping off the walls. With shock or panic, thatâs the real question.
âOkay, youâre seriously starting to scare me.âÂ
Ben was snapped out of the thought process he had been pulled into by Katâs voice. His eyes widened for a moment and he took in the four of them, stood there with questioning and confused expressions on their faces. Of course they were confused because his thought process was his own. And Katâs mother and father would not have remembered such an insignificant detail as Ben had -- not to mention the fact he was much more grown up than he had been back then. There was no way for any of them to truly grasp what had gone on inside the males head. He thought he was grateful for that.Â
âIâm fine --â he began, which was definitely a lie. But, how did he go about explaining anything? Did he confront Katâs parents about it? Did he go to his own mother first? Did he mention it to Kat first? All it took was one simple glance into one of their memories and heâd be free of the questions that were circulating in his mind. He wasnât prepared to do that though. So, instead, he had to go on. âA bit of a dizzy spell there.â Heâd mention it later, he told himself. When Kat wasnât around her parents -- or when her parents werenât around her. He could have been wrong, after all. He didnât know whether Kat was even adopted, much less that she was his sister. Not for certain. It wasnât the best way to bring anything up -- with speculation. But surely he needed to say something and soon -- but not yet.
âItâs nice to meet you all,â he continued, offering them a smile in an attempt to recover from his earlier mishap.Â
Who Says The Truth Doesnât Hurt? || The Jackson Family and the Sutton Family
Six hours. It had only been six hours since Katherine had arrived at their hotel door, and yet, it felt like a year. A million questions were thrown at her from a million more directions, and in return, Kat was greeted with boring stories of her Adoptive Parentâs life back in society. Though, through it all, Kat had found common ground with little Oakley, her new adoptive brother.
The two of them had managed to ban together to sneak away from the adults, but eventually, they were dragged back to listen to the stories once more.Â
Demetria, Katâs adoptive mother, was boring on about some news stories from back home, when Katherine spotted her chance out of the rest of the story. Ben. A large, devilish smile reached her lips. âDemi, look! One of my friends!â She ran in the direction of the boy, shouting, âBen! Ben! Wait up!â She came to a stop in front of him, softly whispering, âSave me, hereâŠâ She gestured to her parents, of which were just now beginning to follow behind her.Â
Having family in Lake Grimstone was not something Ben thought heâd ever see. Then again, he wasnât sure that they would ever get off of the island and yet, here they were. Of course, it was just relocation and not âoff the islandâ in the sense that many previously meant. Still, they were no longer there and there were many family members of residents walking freely around Lake Grimstone -- it was almost completely unreal.Â
On his own for a moment, Ben found himself stopped in his tracks by the calling of his name just to the left of him. His gaze moved in the direction of the sound and he found himself looking upon a brunette and three others. Stopping in his tracks, he found himself face to face with Katherine who looked as though she desperately needed an escape of some sort. That wasnât surprising. While Ben was thrilled to have his mother here, he knew that many people werenât as happy about the visitation as he was. Ben could understand why that might be -- especially given the way some people reacted to the existence of powers in the first place. Add that onto dysfunctional relationships and visitation wouldnât be the best place. For some. That may not have been Katherineâs reason, but he knew that could account for a fair few residents of Lake Grimstone.
His lips pulled into a smile and he nodded at Katâs plea for help. "Hi,â he greeted her before turning to her parents, who had finally crossed the distance towards him. âIâm Ben, Katâs friend. You must be --â He was stopped in his tracks when he finally took the two individuals in. Two people he recognised -- not just because heâd once passed them on the street when he was fifteen and been a little too interested in the conversation they were having (though heâd be able to recognise any one of those people given the chance, too). No, this was a lot more meaningful than that. At least, Ben thought so. These were the two people he had seen come to his house more than once before his little sister was born. The people whom he had heard whisper and mutter about babies and adoption with his mother. These were the people that had adopted his sister, the people that had provided her with a better home and a better life. Katâs parents.Â
Kat, who was around the age his sister would be now -- approximately. In that moment, he was trying his hardest to stop his brain from jumping to the conclusion it so desperately wanted to get to. Of course, he was failing as every thought lead down the same path, the same speculation. The conclusion that left him hanging, mid sentence, as he spoke to these people who he had seen just over nineteen years ago. He didnât know what to say, or even where he had stopped. Did he say anything? Heâd never felt such an overwhleming desire to delve into memories as he did in that moment. All it would take was one leap with his power and he would know. All it would take was a total breach of privacy -- which wasnât something Ben would partake in, no matter how much parts of his mind pulled at him to do so.

Did your parents ever name your little sister?
Not to my knowledge. I mean, they could have thought about it, they could have made a decision, even, but as far as I know, they didnât. If either of them did have an idea, it would have been my mom... But why would they tell me otherwise? Itâs a little more upsetting to think about then -- for all of us.
Ben shook his head, his blue eyes looking down at the brunette. âNo, Iâm sure Iâm at least partially to blame.â He informed her. Had they both been paying more attention then perhaps they wouldnât have bumped into one another. He nodded after she asked her question. âIâm fine,â he assured her with a smile of his own. âYou seem to bump into things a lot,â he noted, remembered the previous time theyâd met and sheâd found herself running straight into a post. There was certainly humour in his tone though.
She nodded in agreement, taking her blame with no disagreements. SHe just stood there, an embarrassed blush on her cheeks. âHey! Last time I couldnât see, this time I wasnât paying attention. Those two situations should be judged differently.â
Ben smiled, chuckling lightly. âOkay,â he nodded, meeting her gaze. âIâll judge them completely separately.â He promised the brunette with a smile. âIâm sure there is a difference,â he joked.
trulyevanescent:
She didnât even know what happened, only that one minute she was jogging like there wasnât a care in the world, next she was holding on to strong arms in attempt not to tumble down the slope. She did her best not to fall, finally sighing in relief when her body seemed to stay up-right.âOh, no, no itâs fine. It was my fault.â She blushed in embarrassment, releasing her grip from his forearm. She let her eyes scan his posture and footing, just to make sure she hadnât accidentally given him a twisted ankle when her body weight fell on him. âAre you okay?â Her eyes finally rose to meet his, her own apologetic smile reaching her lips.
A quick melody thumped inside Katâs brain as she jogged, her iPod on full blast. She hadnât gotten much sleep the night before, so at 5:00 am when her restless body tossed and turned once more, she had finally just given up and put on her running shoes. She found one of the quietest trails, assuming she would be the only one to journey down itâs path. And now, here she is, jogging down a trail that had seemed empty, not even looking where she was going. No wonder she ended up crashing into someone on the way down a hill.
Ben would admit that the addition of a trail was a helpful one. The island had a path, sure, but there were no actual trails that would could decide to run on. Of course, that wasnât a problem for Ben given the fact he knew the island like the back of his hand. He wasnât quite as knowledgable about this new home, though. So, a trail made things either, whether that be for running or just hiking it was handy. Earbuds in, and music allowing the male to keep a steady pace as he made his way up the slope, Ben was content with a morning run. It wasnât something he did too often, but it wasnât exactly a rare occurrence either. One glance at the ground, however, meant that the blue-eyed male found himself bumping into a familiar face -- literally. He offered the brunette an apologetic smile, gaze focussing on her. âAre you okay?â
What is it like to be married to your best friend?
Awful. Never do it.
ANTI HONESTY HOUR.
Best se you've ever had?
Wouldnât know, Iâm still waiting.Â
ANTI HONESTY HOUR.
Do you ever wonder how your little sister ended up?
No, never.Â
ANTI HONESTY HOUR.
âYou too.â She returned the smile and looked forward, continuing to the hospital. âSo, uh, what got you put here?â
Power wise? Memory manipulation. What about you?

Daniel chuckled and shook his head. âYou underestimated me then because I did see right through your plan.â The joking felt nice but of course it wouldnât last forever. âYou donât think sheâll mind sleeping in the guest room?â He asked laughing at how silly it sounded.
âIt isnâtâ He said with a shrug. He wasnât sure what Ben would think of what he had just revealed at him. By his words he figured that like most he blamed him and probably also thought the worst of him but Ben was his friend so even though he did think the worst he would still try and give him advice or at least that was what he was hoping. âI donât know what I was thinking⊠actually I might know.â He let out a sigh and shook his head. âI might haveâŠâ his words trailed off and he shifted in the sofa. âJust look through my memories and see what happened.â He didnât need to tell him where to stop looking he was sure that once he got to the kiss between him and Aaron he would know what he meant.Â
Ben chuckled lightly. âI guess I did.â He nodded. âIâm sorry, man.â Still chuckling, Ben shuffled back into the seat, getting a little more comfortable. Dannyâs comment gained a louder, more enthusiastic laugh and he shook his head. âNo, Iâm sure sheâd be perfectly fine with that.â He informed the male, shaking his head at his friendâs humour.Â
Listening to Danny, Ben raised his brows, curious as to what it was that Danny âmight knowâ. Honestly, with his friend being so vague there was very little that Ben was actually understanding at that moment. His brows furrowed as Danny requested Ben look through his memories. He moved forward in the chair, his elbows resting on his knees. âYou want me to look through your memories?â He asked, raising a brow. âThat bad, huh?â He ran a hand through his hair and nodded. âOkay.â The memory manipulator had been asked to look at peopleâs memories before, to change them or alter them, but Danny had never asked him to before now.
Soon enough, Ben was sifting through memories -- not entirely sure what he was looking for but he could definitely rule some out. For instance, Bianca staying over his after the party and the scenario with Rosemary didnât make much sense in regards to âwhat came over himâ. Or at least, not from Dannyâs memory of it. A conversation with Brooklyn could have been easier skipped over, but Ben knew of the relationship that the two individualâs once had, so he lingered on the memory -- but that was after the run in with Rosemary so it couldnât have been that. However, what it could have been was what the conversation lead to; a confession on Dannyâs part that made Ben raise his brows. He knew what he should have been looking for after that, and sure enough he found it -- a moment that started with anger and lead to a kiss.Â
Ben didnât bother looking any further. That was probably what Danny was talking about. If not, then there was no reason why Danny couldnât correct him, or why he couldnât keep sifting through the other maleâs memories. Still, he stopped though he stayed silent for a moment, just nodding slowly. âSo, Aaron?â He raised a brow, questioning whether heâd found his way to the right thing.
âThen, yeah. I guess you can come.â She gave him a small smile, thankful that someone here could be so caring to others. âIâm Katherineââ She was just about to say her last name, but then stopped, deciding not you. âKatherine. Just Katherine.â
Okay. [ he nods and smiles ] Iâm Ben -- itâs nice to meet you.

âAnd now it all makes sense as to why you guys married so quickly. You both knew this was coming and wanted to get out of the third roommate.â Danny shook his head and laughed. Clearly he was joking but in case Ben couldnât tell he thought the laugh would be a giveaway of it. Danny walked further in to his friends home and took a seat on the sofa. âPlace looks nice. I guess having a girl as a roommate is better than a guy but if you ever grow tired of Callie I can move in and she can go to my place.â He joked. Joking was easy, it came natural to Danny but this was not one of those visits, he was here to talk to Ben he just didnât know how to.Â
He nodded at Ben when he said that Callie was out and in a way he supposed that her not being there might be better. Aaron was her best friend after all. He was even the one that gave her away. âNah, I mean I wouldnât have minded but I came to talk to you, bro.â Daniel let out a sigh and ran his hand through his hair. âThe past couple of months have been crazy and I just really need a friend but also someone that can knock some sense in to me.â He looked up at Ben and took in a deep breath. âI cheated on Crys⊠twice.â His voice might have been just above a whisper but he was almost certain that Ben had heard him.Â
Ben laughed at his friendâs comment. âYou know, I didnât think anyone would figure that out.â He praised his friend, amusement in his words. âIt was really the best way to make sure.â He joked, moving to sit down opposite Danny in the front room. âHaving a roommate that is your wife helps too,â he commented, chuckling lightly. âBy all means though, take that up with Callie.â He offered, a smile tugging on the corners of his lips. âNot like the second bedroom is of much use though.â He mentioned with a shrug, still smiling.Â
âOkay,â he started, raising a brow as he looked at his friend. âThat doesnât sound particularly good.â And of course, his comment was proven true when Danny continued. He wasnât sure what he expected when Danny had showed up at his door, but this was certainly not it. He hadnât expected the revelation that his friend had cheated on his girlfriend once, let alone twice. âFuck Danny, what were you even thinking?â His brows furrowed as he looked at his friend, clearly not impressed -- not that anyone would be. Of course, he didnât know the ins and outs of everything but that wouldnât excuse what Danny had done anyway. Cheating had really put a damper on his relationship with Callie not long ago, and there hadnât even been any real cheating at that point. âTwice?â He questioned, sighing and shaking his head.Â
Looking For Advice || Danjamin
He didnât have to wait long for the door to open and for his friend to great him. Since the move the two of them hadnât really seen much of each other. It really as no oneâs fault though or at least Danny didnât think it was. Ben had just gotten married and was probably trying to get used to the new changes in his life. Danny had also not made a real effort to go out and see his friend. Not because he didnât want to but because he was giving him the space he needed. âHeyâ Danny replied as he moved in to his friendâs house. âHow is it fair that you and Callie get a place all to yourself and I have to share a place with two other people?â He asked with a chuckle.
Blue hues looked around the other maleâs home it was nice a little smaller than his but still pretty big for newlyweds. âIs the wife around?â Danny asked turning back around to look at his friend. He didnât mind if Callie was there in fact maybe she could also give him some much needed advice. Callie and Ben had been through a lot and they still managed to make it through. She was also a girl so maybe getting a girlâs perspective would help. If anything just talking to Ben would help. Out of all his friends Ben was the one that had a good head on his shoulders
Ben chuckled lightly at his friendâs words. âWhat can I say?â He shrugged, continuing. âMarriage definitely has more than a few perks.â He commented, partially joking. It was true that marriage had its perks, that the reason he and Callie shared the -- smaller but far more private -- townhouse was because they were married, however those were just superficial perks. The best thing, without a doubt, was knowing that he and Callie were in it together and for the long haul. Not that they didnât really know that anyway -- anyone that knew them could have figured out that even before their marriage, all they saw was each other. âAh yeah, we got out of that awful third roommate thing.â He chuckled once again, along with Danny.
The blue eyed male shook his head at his friendâs question. âNo, she went out earlier.â He informed the other male,  raising his brows slightly. âSo it was her you came to see then?â He asked his friend, joking of course. Though for all Ben knew, Callie could have been the one Danny was looking for. Ben didnât know why he had come over, after all.
