Random question. How is the LGBTQ community generally received in Scotland?

I’d say the generally population are very open, to the point where Scotland was seen as one of the most LGBT-friendly countries in Europe.

Unfortunately there has been a targeted move by anti-LGBT American evangelicals in recent years which have swept the whole UK into a transphobic storm which unfortunately Scotland hasn’t been immune to.

What makes it difficult just now is that anti-trans groups quickly end up becoming anti-LGBT. Classic divide and conquer type stuff.

There’s a new group that’s launched in London call the LGB Alliance. No prizes for guessing their actual motive. Thing is one of the advocates for the group quickly took to Facebook to say ‘We should drop the B now too’.

I’ve rambled a bit, but it’s a fight all over. The nice thing is time is on our side.

The LGB part is generally widely accepted. We have plenty of out politicians, and at one point the majority of the big Scottish parties were lead by queer folk. It's not uncommon or particularly unsafe to be openly gay in public, unless you're on a night out in the same place as some angry homophobic drunks who are thankfully a minority (albeit a vocal and violent one). There's still hate crimes and targeted abuse though and to speak quite frankly the way that trans folk are treated is not good enough for a country that's supposedly so proud of being progressive. Wait times for gender clinics are abysmal. Official recognition of your real gender is a needlessly convoluted process that can take years. A lot of people are self medicating out of necessity meanwhile we have terfy cunts in even the left leaning parties stopping reforms that would improve the situation. Being visibly gay is safe but being visibly trans is less so, at least according to every Scottish trans person I've spoken to so far. We're not a conservative nation but we can't get complacent about this stuff, there's still work to be done and the way the political climate is right now it's going to be extremely easy for them to take back every victory we've earned if we let them.

I’ve found that while Scotland as a whole seems accepting of the LGBTQ community it does depend on where you live as to the level of that acceptance.

Having lived in a small town in the east of Scotland since the age of 14 it’s sort of a ‘we know there’s gay people but we don’t talk about it’ especially when it comes to lesbians, bisexual and trans people. It took me a while to feel comfortable holding my partners hand and that’s really the only sort of affection we show when we’re in my home town.

Whereas in bigger cities such as Aberdeen and Dundee I am much more comfortable showing affection because I feel that the community is much more accepted, there are some queer spaces and there seems to be an open discussion about the LGBTQ community so it doesn’t feel like such a secret topic.

Obviously this is only my experience as a Scottish lesbian so I can’t speak for the whole community.

I didn't want to make it seem like all small towns are backwards, but this is true. I'm from the Highlands and whenever I go back folk still ask me if I have a husband yet. I have a wife! But we don't talk about it. If you're in a city you're pretty much free to exist however you want with little to no pushback, but it's a different vibe in the smaller communities. Not usually outwardly hostile, just... Not as welcoming. Be gay but do it quietly. That said, no matter where you are, it's still pretty bad in high schools. Kids are wee shites. Quality of life for queer folk all over Scotland improves drastically after you leave school and I while I think it's definitely better than when I was there at least with what the teachers will let folk get away with, the culture of homophobia and transphobia in schools is pretty solidly engrained. :/

Technically I live in the highlands and I’m forever having to come out to everyone and it is exhausting! It’s a little more complicated for me as well because my spouse is non binary which is still a very new concept here so my spouse and I have had many long conversations on how I should introduce them to strangers. I tend to say I have a wife so I don’t have to come out by saying ‘I’m gay’ and then just continue to use spouse afterwards. It can often feel like I’m betraying who they are because it can be too mentally exhausting to have to educate people who I will probably never see again about their gender identity.

I definitely feel like while most people don’t really have a reaction to me coming out as gay I can see a change in their deemenar and facial expressions if I start to explain that my partner is non binary. I’ve asked if my partner has felt comfortable being gay while they are here (they’re Canadian) and they say they do but I think you start to see the prejudice and feel the need to keep quiet when you live here.

Scotland is obviously not the worst place to be part of the LGBTQ community but I still think there’s a long way to go before the whole community is accepted completely and free to live their life as loud as they want.
