Pictures of Molo Church
Untying knots while being one in Christ and one in All
First of all we would like to thank you for coming to our blog. Sadly, our Church today has different meaning to Catholics like us. Unlike before, the Church was defined as a community where people go together and worship God. But now, the Church is just described as a building. Our blog today will be: First, Showing you a description about Molo Church including the history and the location of it. Second, For you to know more about what the Church really is.Third, For you to know how the Church helps Catholic and the Ilonggo people. Lastly, to encourage you to re-build the Church. Enjoy! and we wish that this blog can help you!
What is the Role of the Church to the Community?
The role of the Church in our own words is that it is the reminder that we should be united in everything we do because as a Church, we should be One, Catholic, Apostolic and Holy. The Church also reminds us that we have a duty and desire to share the good news to others. Lastly, the role of the Church to the community is that we should be servants either physical or mental, thus giving service will help us do what Jesus will do in problems etc.. Molo Church for Ilonggos stands among the rest, its strength and beauty is a testament to them in unrivaled craft and skills in masonry and arts. It also gives a meaning to the Ilonggo’s which is to remember that “We are all equal” thats why it is called a Feminist Church. (Look at the History of the Church for more reference)
A word from Jared Limjoco
I hope that this blog reaches out to all other people who are straying away from the 3 dimensions of faith. Hopefully they would understand our blog thoroughly and know the different traditions of the church such as proper conduct, what to wear, etc.
A word from Marc Lo
The blog can help the Catholics. The blog shows that the Catholic Church can unite people.I learned that the Church helps Catholics because it is also a reminder that we are all brothers and sisters. Also that we were all made in the image and likeness of God
A word from Yukihiro Kawamura
I find this project as my opportunity to be able to inform people about Molo Church. Using blogs are effective ways to give information or opinion about a certain topic. This Church is full of mysterious background and history. More projects like this would make us know more about other Churches.Lastly the Church has helped a lot of Catholics because it is a reminder that we are One and that all of use are Brothers and Sisters.
A word from Ianna Malabanan
Hello there! My name is Ianna Malabanan. This blog that our group made was actually not that hard because we already had researched about the Church, but instead of just giving an okay work we might as well strive for more. I am very thankful to God because he guided me and my group mates into making this project. I would like to thank Miss Tess for her very brilliant ways of teaching and I would also want to thank my Family because they are the people who got to put my feeling up and so much more. In this project I learned that everyone is equal and no one should be left out, because as Catholics we should believe that we are equal and we should be “universal” which means we accept anyone. I also learned that Churches has their own uniqueness and definition in them. Another lesson that I learned is that team work is better than self-work because in team work you have that effort of putting it up and giving your best into it. Oh! I would also like to thank Marian Odessa and Ms.Lyn Gelvero for giving the time to answer our questions. Remember to SMILE!
Molo Church is located in IloIlo, Western Visayas
Molo Church
History and Brief Description
Molo Church is the only Gothic church in the entire country outside of Manila, It was constructed in 1831 under Fray Pablo Montaño and further expanded and finished by Fray Agapito Buenaflor in 1888 under the supervision of Don Jose Manuel Locsin.
Its two belfries had around 30 bells of different sizes ranging from small handbells to big campaniles making a musical tone.
The Gothic character of the church is manifested not only in its two pointed towers but also on the pointed arches at the main altar and four side altars, pulpits and confessionals.
On August 4, 1886, national hero Jose Rizal dropped at Molo on his way back to Manila from exile at Dapitan in Mindanao. He went to see his friend, Raymundo Melliza who showed him the church.
In his diary, Rizal wrote, “We went to Molo to see the church painted by a lad who has left the locality. The church is pretty (Iglesia Bonita) outside with paintings inside mostly copies of biblical scenes by Gusty Dore.”
Actually, there were two painters who painted the murals inside the church Mariano Mabunay and Jesus Huervas.
The church was so strong that it withstood several strong earthquakes in the past. During World War II, it was the evacuation center of the civilians supervised by its parish priest, Msgr. Manuel Alba.
One of the original towers which was a Japanese machine gun nest, was destroyed on March 18, 1945, when shelled by the artillery of the United States Liberation Forces bringing its bells crumbling to the ground.
After the war, restoration of the damaged parts of the church was undertaken by Msgr. Alba and Gov. Timoteo Consing, Sr.
The church, which is dedicated to Santa Ana, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, has larger than life images of female saints lined in two rows (eight on each side) inside the church, each standing on a pedestal attached to a massive stone pillar and under the Gothic style canopy.
The Church is also known for the name “The Feminist Church” because most if not all the statues in the Church represent female saints and also because the Church believes that “Everyone is Equal”.
These saints are Sta. Marcela, Apolonia, Genoveva, Isabel, Felicia, Ines, Monica, Magdalena, Juliana, Lucia, Rosa de Lima, Teresa, Clara, Cecilia, Margarita and Marta.
Remember!
DO'S AND DON’TS AND ETIQUETTE
The time to arrive at Church is before the service starts. If you arrive after the Divine Liturgy begins, try to enter the Church quietly and observe what is happening. The best way to avoid this situation is to arrive on time.
You should also not enter the Church during the reading of Epistle or the Gospel.
It is customary when venerating an icon, especially the principal icons, to make two reverences (sign of the cross followed by a bow), sign of the cross a third time followed by kissing the icon, then a final reverence (sign of the cross followed by a bow).
When venerating (kissing) an icon, pay attention to where you kiss. It is not proper to kiss an icon on the face, you should kiss their hand. When you approach an icon to venerate it, kiss the Gospel, scroll, or hand cross in the hand of the person depicted, or kiss the hand or foot. In fact, the hands and feet on some icons are covered with metal for just this purpose and so as not to damage the icon itself. As you venerate an icon, show the proper respect due to the person depicted; the same respect you would show them in person. Remember blot off that lipstick first!
It is not proper to light candles during the Epistle and Gospel readings, during the little or great entrances, the sermon and most of the times when the faithful are standing.
It is not appropriate to greet people and have conversations during the services. Talk to God while in church through you prayers, hymns and thanksgiving.
Leaving church before dismissal deprives us of a blessing.
For the attire inside the Church always remember we should offer Christ our “Sunday best” not our everyday common wear. And we should dress modestly, not in a flashy way that would bring attention to ourselves - and certainly not in a provocative or alluring way. Our dress should always be becoming to a Christian - especially in the Church. To give an example to this we will be going to use the uniform and dress code at our school. For girls we have skirts which is supposed to be longer than our knees, any appealing dress ware is strictly prohibited, for boys the pants should also be longer than the knees. This also applies to the Church in which any kind of shorts is inappropriate and there should be no t-shirt with any kind of drawing in it.
Such activity is disrespectful of the sacred services and disruptive to others in attendance. At the very most, a bottle may be brought for very small children and babies. Eating snacks (or even whole meals) is totally inappropriate. If a child has an immediate need for nourishment, they should be fed before the services, or taken outside the church to eat a snack. If a child did eat something during the service, parents should clean up any mess before leaving the church. Children who are going to receive Holy Communion should learn to fast Sunday mornings by the age of seven. chewing gum is not allowed during Liturgy for everyone.

The Church passes on all the authentic teachings of the apostles authentically interpreted to successive generations of Christians through the ages through its living Traditions. Scriptural Images of the Church is First,The Church is the People of God.This image is rooted in the Covenant that Yahweh set up with His chosen people of Israel. Jesus perfected this Old Testament Covenant by instituting a New Covenant in His own blood, and by calling together a people— both Jews and Gentiles—to be united in Spirit.Second, The Church is the Body of Christ.God is the head of the body and we are the ‘body parts’. A Church Testimonial from Marian Odessa
Before we start, we would want to clarify that Marian Odessa herself allowed us to show her name and information for this blog.
Ianna: Good Afternoon Marian
Marian: Good Afternoon Ianna
Ianna: Please state your Age,Occupation and Status in life (married or single)
Marian: 14, Student, Single
Ianna: What is a Church for you?
Marian: Church for me is what binds people together and helps in keeping us close to God.
Ianna: How has the church helped you become a better Christian?
Marian: It kept my connection and relationship with God strong. In Church, i really felt God's love for everyone, and this urged me to strengthen my faith even more.
Ianna: What activities or events in the Church do you find most striking? Why?
Marian: For me, singing for God is the most striking. I have been in choir for almost five years, and singing has been my passion ever since. For me, singing praises for God is a way of expressing our love and respect for Him.
Ianna: If you have the chance to create a program or activities for the Church, what is it? Why?
Marian: Camps and Retreats. Nowadays, the unity of our Church is shaky. Maybe because of the negativity that has been widely spread in our world right now. And Unity is one of the most important thing in our Church to help fight all of the challenges that are brought upon our Church. Camps and Retreats can help a lot, it will bring people closer and unite us even more.
Ianna: Sharing in Pope Francis mission in "rebuilding the Church" how can you bring young persons closer to Jesus Christ? Please give concrete ways to do it.
Marian: Being Kind and Forgiving can bring other people closer to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is kind and forgiving. He sacrificed himself to repent our sins, and he forgives and accept us sinners. By also being kind and forgiving to younger people, you are showing that you are a Godly person. Even in this way, you can influence other to be like you, thus, making them closer to Jesus Christ
Ianna: What is your message to the generations today, especially those who are not interested to attend mass?
Marian: If you want to change the world, keep the faith and always believe in Him.
Ianna: Thank you Marian for your time and effort
A Church Testimonial from Ms.Lyn Gelvero
Before we start, we would want to clarify that Ms. Lyn Gelvero herself allowed us to show her name and information for this blog.
Ianna: Good Afternoon, Ms.Lyn
Ms.Lyn: Good Afternoon, Ianna
Ianna: Please state your Age, Occupation and Status in life (married or single)
Ms.Lyn: 25, Marketing Assistant, Single
Ianna: What is a Church for you?
Ms.Lyn: For me Church is a symbol of God's love. A house of God were people heals their souls.
Ianna: How has the church helped you become a better Christian?
Ms.Lyn: It helps me to become a better Christian by learning more about the Bible, becoming more helpful to others. I learn to share and to be thankful of what I have.
Ianna: What activities or events in the Church do you find most striking? Why?
Ms. Lyn: The most striking activities I find with Church is the time of Christmas & Lenten season. A time of birth of Lord Jesus Christ were we joyfully celebrate and a time of death the son of God were people mourned.
Ianna: If you have the chance to create a program or activities for the Church, what is it? Why?
Ms.Lyn: If there would be a chance to create a program with the church it would be inviting people to have a bible study group. People who lost their way, such as people in prison because we need to give them a chance. In that way, they can get closer to God and ask for forgiveness. all we need to do us give them a chance.
Ianna: Sharing in Pope Francis mission in "rebuilding the Church" how can you bring young persons closer to Jesus Christ? Please give concrete ways to do it.
Ms.Lyn: In this modern world, most young people are more loyal and praise technology than hearing the.word of God. All we need to do is open up their minds and heart by giving them an activity in which they can share their talents like joining them in a choir if they love singing, or building a group of workshop were they can mold their own talents with bible study. In this way, they can enjoy and share their talents as well as getting closer and knowing God.
Ianna: What is your message to the generations today, especially those who are not interested to attend mass?
Ms.Lyn: Message to young people; God is real. Young one, give time to hear the word of God. Remember, we wait long hours to see our favorite artists, why can't we give at least 2 hours maximum time for God? We give time to watch a movie, but why can't we give time to hear the Gospel? We read different types of magazines, but why can't we give time to open up our Bible in a dusty closet for just 20 minutes and reflect? In my own opinion, if we cannot go to church to hear the mass, at least give time to read the Bible and reflect.
Ianna: Thank you Ms.Lyn for your time and effort!
Take a break! Choose a game! (The answers are at the end of this blog)
This Bible verse will help us because this will remind us the meaning of the word "Catholic" which means "Universal". This Bible verse will also help us gain more trust to our neighbors and appreciate our efforts.
This Bible Verse will be able to help us because it means that man and women are equal, neither is more important and neither is less important. This verse will remind us that we are all created in the image and likeness of God.
