My opinion on the âJames vs Snapeâ issue.
I love the HP fandom, but I just hate how in this fandom Snape gets more love than he deserves, meanwhile James Potter gets more hate than he will ever deserve. I canât believe that itâs 2017 and people still believe Snape was a hero and James was a terrible person.
James Potter was a jerk when he was a teen and yes, he bullied Snape. But he was 15, and âa lot of people are idiots at the age of fifteenâ. Tell me that you werenât an idiot sometimes at that age, I dare you.
If he was such a bad person, then why was he totally okay with Remus being a werewolf? He loved his friends like nobody else, and itâs canon. He became an unregistered animagi so that his werewolf friend wouldnât have to suffer through the full moon alone.
Do you realize that when James Potter used Levicorpus on Snape, he had already been planning on becoming a death eater and had been trying to out Remus as a Werewolf? This is actual canon from DH.
Besides, wasnât Levicorpus a spell that Snape himself created? How did James know about it? Oh, maybe Snape used it on him before. Of course, this is only speculation⊠But it is based on what Remus said. You have to remember that even if James was an idiot, Snape was no saint either. Remus said that Snape ânever lost an opportunity to curse Jamesâ. In fact, itâs mentioned by anyone who talks about the marauders and Snape that the animosity and hexing between them was mutual, so donât tell me that only James hexed Snape.  We donât actually know how one-sided Snapeâs bullying was. But if what Remus said itâs true, then it was mutual. Even if Snapeâs worst memory is true as told,  this happened after he was openly associating with pureblood supremacists, dismissing the use of dark magic as âa jokeâ.
You need to remember that James despised Dark Magic, and he couldnât even just say the word âmudbloodâ. He was the complete opposite to a pureblood supremacist and openly associated with every single being that the supremacists thought to be inferior. Werewolves, muggleborns, blood traitorsâŠ
Eventually, he grew up and became Head Boy. He matured, and did it enough for Lily to fall in love with him. You can talk a lot about James if you so wish, but donât come at me to tell me that Lily was stupid. Donât underestimate her that way. She wouldnât had fallen in love with him and married him if he was still such an idiot.
After school (possibly even in his final year), James grew up, and became part of the Order of the Phoenix as soon as he left Hogwarts. He realized what a douche he was to people and changed for the better. He joined the Order because there were innocent people dying for no reason, and he knew he could fight and help. He joined because he loved Lily and he wanted to make sure there was a future for them, a future where they could live happily ever after. And then he died trying to protect his family. He faced Lord Volvemort wandless, unarmed, so his wife and their baby could escape. James Potter was many things but he was not an idiot. He knew that facing Voldemort at that point would be the last thing he did, but did it anyway. He decided that Lilyâs life, and Harryâs, were more important than his own.Â
You have to remember that literally everybody from Hagrid to Lord Voldemort thought James Potter was a good and brave man.Â
On the other hand, Snape called the girl he was âin love withâ a mudblood infront of the entire school. He directly verbally abused her with a racial slur and became involved in a movement that wanted to kill her and eradicate her kind. He chose to shatter their friendship because his ego was hurt that a girl was helping him, even though she probably was the only person who was nice to him.Â
His treatment of Petunia was terrible. Heâs been bullying people since before he even went to Hogwarts. Since he was little, he thought muggle-borns and muggles were inferior.Â
He created a spell that could kill his enemies when he was at Hogwarts. And after that, he finally joined a terrorist organization that wanted to kill people like the woman he was supposed to be in love with. He probably killed and tortured people. He was a loyal Death Eater for multiple years. Â Â
Snape may have loved Lily, but his love for her was selfish, seen in the fact that he was willing to let her husband and her infant child die. Actually, I donât think he loved her. He was obsessed with her. Or at least, he loved the idea of her that was on his mind, not the real Lily Evans. If he had really loved her, he would have tried to save her family, knowing that she would suffer if they died. But he was willing to let a baby and an innocent man die if it meant he could save Lily. If it meant he could have her.Â
And when Lily died to protect her child, he realized that he made the wrong decision and âchangedâ. He became a spy, and I know it was hard. I understand that. I acknowledge Snapeâs efforts as a spy and his contributions to the war. In the end, he turned out to be a brave man who tried to rectify his mistakes. But that doesnât really change how a terrible person he was.
He abused his students, he bullied them. He targeted Neville, knowing he already had self-esteem issues, knowing what happened to his parents. He threatened to poison his pet. He consciously targeted someone he perceived as weak, to the point where he became Nevilleâs worst fear at age 13. A fucking teacher was his biggest fear, not the people that tortured his parents into madness. Donât you see how fucked up is that?!
Snape body shamed and insulted Hermione, who was an intelligent and hardworking student (just like Lily). He made her cry.Â
Yes, he tried to protect Harry, and saved his life more than once. But he also verbally abused him, a neglected, abused, orphan who had done nothing wrong but look like his dead father. A father that he didnât even know, by the way. Snape mocked and insulted him at every turn. Snape did everything that he could to make Harryâs life miserable because it was his way to have his revenge against James. This is not a 15 years old boy bullying another, itâs a fucking 30 years old man abusing a kid because he couldnât let go of his hatred for a dead person.
He tried to have an innocent man killed because of what happened when they were 16. Yes, Sirius was an idiot for that, Iâm not denying it, but he didnât coerce Snape into doing anything. He just gave him information. It means that Snape, on his own, decided it would be a great idea to sneak into the Shrieking Shack just to prove that Remus was a werewolf.Â
He caused Remus to lose his job after spending years suffering in poverty. He deliberately made Remusâ students to write an essay on how to spot and kill a werewolf, to emotionally attack and possibly out him as a werewolf. He later did out him to the entire wizarding world, and what was his reason? He he was angry because Sirius didnât die.
After seeing the abuse Dursleyâs inflicted on Harry, he thought it was funny and felt no sympathy. Harry was fifteen. The same age that Snape was when he was (supposedly) âbulliedâ. He didnât care about the abuse, he didnât see himself in Harry. He thought it was funny. Fucking funny.Â
Usually, people at 15 are jerks and bully each other. But teachers arenât supossed to abuse kids.Â
James Potter was a jackass, but he didnât join the equivalent of a magical nazi organization when he left Hogwarts. He didnât experiment with dark magic and he died protecting his family. He grew out of it. He was a good person in the end.
Snape only betrayed Voldemort because he was chasing after Lily. He only left the death eaters because he wanted to protect Lily, if Neville was the chosen one, heâd had remained in his position as a Death Eater.
So sorry if I prefer James over Snape all the way.

Why "doing something relaxingâ does not help your anxiety
A lot of the time when people give advice intended to relieve anxiety, they suggest doing ârelaxingâ things like drawing, painting, knitting, taking a bubble bath, coloring in one of those zen coloring books, or watching glitter settle to the bottom of a jar.
This advice is always well-intentioned, and Iâm not here to diss people who either give it or who benefit from it. But it has never, ever done shit for me, and this is because it goes about resolving anxiety in the completely wrong way. Â
THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO when suffering from anxiety is to do a ârelaxingâ thing that just enables your mind to dwell and obsess more on the thing thatâs bothering you. You need to ESCAPE from the dwelling and the obsession in order to experience relief.
You can drive to a quiet farm, drive to the beach, drive to a park, or anywhere else, but as someone who has tried it all many, many times, trust meâitâs a waste of gas. You will just end up still sad and stressed, only with sand on your butt. You canât physically escape your sadness. Your sadness is inside of you. To escape, you need to give your brain something to play with for a while until you can approach the issue with a healthier frame of mind.Â
People who have anxiety do not need more time to contemplate, because we will use it to contemplate how much we suck.
In fact, you could say thatâs what anxiety isâhyper-contemplating. When we let our minds run free, they run straight into the thorn bushes. Our minds are already running, and they need to be controlled. They need to be given something to do, or theyâll destroy everything, just like an overactive husky dog ripping up all the furniture.Â
Therefore, I present to you:Â
THINGS YOU SHOULD NOT DO WHEN ANXIOUS
âGo on a walk
âWatch a sunset, watch fish in an aquarium, watch glitter, etc.
âGo anywhere where the main activity is sitting and watching
âDraw, color, do anything that occupies the hands and not the mind
âDo yoga, jog, go fishing, or anything that lets you mentally driftÂ
âDo literally ANYTHING that gives you great amounts of mental space to obsess and dwell on things.
THINGS YOU SHOULD DO WHEN ANXIOUS:
âDo a crossword puzzle, Sudoku, or any other mind teaser game. Crosswords are the best.
âWrite something. It doesnât have to be a masterpiece. Write the Top 10 Best Restaurants in My City. Rank celebrities according to Best Smile. Write some dumb Legolas fanfiction and rip it up when youâre done. Itâs not for publication, itâs a relief exercise that only you will see.Â
âRead something, watch TV, or watch a movieâas long as itâs engrossing. Donât watch anything which you can run as background noise (like, off the top of my head, Say Yes to The Dress.) As weird as it seems, American Horror Story actually helps me a lot, because it sucks me in.Â
âMasturbate. Yes, Iâm serious. Your mind has to concentrate on the mini-movie itâs running. It canât run Sexy Titillating Things and All The Things That are Bothering Me at the same time. (âŠI hope. If it can, thenâŠignore this one.)Â
âDo math problemsâliterally, google âalgebra problems worksheetâ and solve them. If you havenât done math since 7th grade this will really help you. I donât mean with math, I mean with the anxiety.Â
âPlay a game or a sport with someone that requires great mental concentration. Working with 5 people to get a ball over a net is a challenge which will require your brain to turn off the Sadness Channel.Â
âPlay a video game, as long as itâs not something like candy crush or Tetris thatâs mindless.Â
THINGS YOU SHOULD DO DURING PANIC ATTACKS ESPECIALLY:
âList the capitals of all the U.S. states
âList the capitals of all the European countries
âList all the shapes you can see. Or all the colors.Â
âList all the blonde celebrities you can think of.
âPull up a random block of text and count all the As in it, or Es or whatever. Â
Now obviously, I am not a doctor. I am just an anxious person who has tried almost everything to help myself.  Iâve finally realized that the stuff people recommend never works because this is a disorder that thrives on free time and free mental space. When I do the stuff I listed above, I can breathe again. And I hope it helps someone here too.Â
(Now this shouldnât have to be said but if the âdo notsâ work for you then by all means do them. Theyâve just never worked for me.)
This wouldâve been great an hour ago
This is good advice for anxious peeps and peeps with anxious friends. Seems obvious now but I hadnât thought about it this way before.

Challenging Negative Thoughts:
Negative thought:
I canât stand it
Challenge:
I can stand it. Itâs difficult, but I can put up with it. It is good for me.
Negative thought:
I am just not good enough.
Challenge:
I am not perfect. Like everyone, I am good at some things, and not as good at others.
Negative thought:
What is the point in trying?
Challenge:
If I donât try, I wonât know. Trying in itself will broaden my experience and my skill. No one is expecting me to do something perfectly.
Negative thought:
What if I make a mistake? It would be awful.
Challenge:
Everyone makes mistakes. It is good to make mistakes because that is the best way to learn.
Negative thought:
I have nothing to say. I am boring.
Challenge:
I have opinions, thoughts, and feelings. Think of things you enjoy; an example would be reading, writing, and going out. Perhaps I need to improve my ability to express myself. I can practice.
Negative thought:
If people really knew me, they wouldnât like me.
Challenge:
There are things about me that are likeable and unlikeableâJust like everyone else.
Negative thought:
Everyone else has a better time than I doâTheyâre all happy.
Challenge:
I do not know this for a fact. Just because they seem happier than I am, does not mean they are more satisfied.
Negative thought:
It would be best if I stayed away from people because I am not good at relationships.
Challenge:
If I stay away, I do not give myself a chance. I will be alright if I can just relax myself.
Negative thought:
I might break down emotionally in front of people and look ridiculous.
Challenge:
I have a good reason to be upset. People are a lot more understanding than I think. It would not be the end of the world; whatâs wrong with showing emotion?
Negative thought:
Iâm hopeless at everything. I will never sort myself out like this.
Challenge:
Just take one step at a time. Totally condemning myself is nonsense. I have overcome more difficult problems than this.
