Bless the P5R models for moving in such expressive and dynamic ways to communicate small character nuances. This is one of my favorite demonstrations of it. The difference in the way Joker and Akechi react to sudden changes in their environment.

Joker's steady, almost nonchalant stance because in the metaverse he is the confident and reliable leader. He doesn't step back because his role is always on the front lines so he's used to taking the hits whereas the other Thieves can switch out or hang back.

Akechi's full-body flinch and immediate step backwards because he's used to fighting solo and therefore can't afford to get hit. Makes you wonder what dangers and violence he went through since he was 15 that could ingrain this degree of jumpiness in him. His fighting style is more frenzied and mobile so they make his movements more exaggerated.

Then they simultaneously get into battle stance, with Joker covering the right (since he's right handed) and Akechi covering the left (since he's left-handed). Nearly 360° defense. Perfectly complementing each other in battle.

akechi turning himself into what ppl want in search for the love he can't get and ren being someone who is loved for providing what ppl want but can't get the one person he actually loves.

funny how akechi understands ren's struggle on 2/2 the most actually, bcs he already made a very similar decision when he did his first kill. bcs that was the point of no return, when he decided to throw away his own justice and future and doom the world for his own grief (his revenge is a grief response, anger for his mother, reclaiming the justice he thinks she deserves). the more he berates ren for "brainless sentimentality" the funnier (sadder) it is that it was that very sentimentality that led him down the revenge path, his whole life a dedication to his mother. the love isn't wrong, but the choice he made was, just like ren's choice could be. whatever ren feels for akechi, love, want, it is personal to ren, it is selfish (there is a kind of parallel btw how ren might be the only one who loves akechi, like akechi the only one for his mother, in the world), it is strong enough for him to consider a choice of no return, a choice that would change his life irrevocably, forever. bcs ren knows akechi would be dead, ren would know it is only a dream, just like akechi's mother will always be dead, but his feelings for akechi are enough for him to make that choice - the world, his future, his justice can be thrown away for those feelings. to be with a version of akechi, to give akechi the chance he deserves, to get back at their unfair world... thats the extent of what akechi means to ren.
