Thanks to everyone who came during the last three days, and to everyone who made it a success. This year is the first year where the students arranged everything - and the first year with so many people attending the screenings; we had close to 250 people over the three days.

First night at Rendering Reality. It was great to see you all there! So many good films and so many great questions. Rendering Reality is a rare opportunity to get an inside to the world of research anthropology, to see documentaries with a not-for-broadcasting twist and to get to ask emerging filmmakers about their thoughts and challenges in the film process.

Thanks to everyone who came to tonight. We are looking foreward to see you tomorrow - for the screening of eight brand new shorts.

An Artist in Exile by Itab Azzam

Esam lives with her son in Tooting, South London, but home is Homs in Syria. Despite thirty years in this country, Esam's heart remains in Syria - or so she says. When pushed she admits she would remain here. At a time of strife in her home country, she is torn more than ever - aware, like never before of her good fortune living off the generosity of the British state, but filled with ever greater nostalgia for her home country, she channels these feelings into her only outlet - painting images of Syria and placards with which to protest.

Itab Azzam

Itab Azzam is a filmmaker and producer from Syria. For six years she worked as a producer on documentaries including the BBC’s Syrian School and Life of Mohammad and the River Flowing Westward for French and Turkish television, before turning to filmmaking and visual anthropology on a Chevening and Said Foundation scholarhsip. Her work has focused on the dislocation and anguish of the Syrian civil war and the role of art in conflict.

Fantasy of Freedom by Agne Zakarauskaite

Fantasy of Freedom is a non-narrative documentary film about aesthetic manifestations in Lithuanian suburbs. The fantasies, which were secretly incubated during the Soviet occupation suddenly exploded when the country became independent.

The film aims to reflect how social, political and economical changes are mediated through the landscape and architecture.

Agne Zakarauskaite

Agne Zakarauskaite has been developing her interest in filmmaking and photography since 2009.  Her background in anthropology and history has made a significant impact on her films. She is particularly interested in the post-soviet societies and the social processes, which are taking place there.

Agne's film Fantasy of Freedom will be screened on Friday September 7th

Food of Life by Yunsuk Baek

Food of Life is a film project that originally started as an experimental collaboration; art inspires the anthropologist and the anthropologist gives feed back to the art. The graphic designer Dawon Kim made a piece of work called Flamingo People which is inspired by the bird by that name. Flamingos are originally born grey but via their food consumption they turn an orange-pink colour. The designer adapted this concept to humans; what if humans were to do the same? and made a diagram based upon the assumptions and research. The film basically motivated from the art and developed within the theme to present the idea in bigger picture.

Haptic Video and ASMR by Sara Legg

ASMR (or Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) is a physiological response to specific internal and external stimuli that has seen a growing practice of digital amateur video making. This film takes its structure from a one night performance installation curated by the filmmaker, and has as its nexus ASMR video practices. In demonstrating these practices the film explores the embodied viewers' ability to perceive video haptically -- or through the sensation of touch.

This exploration is two fold - first, the film illustrates the ways in which the sensation of touch is re-created and re-presented by amateur video makers, what we can call, following Laura U. Marks, "haptic images", and second, it questions the embodied perception on the part of the audience, or "haptic visuality".

ASMR episodes present a unique and particular instance of embodied viewing -- where an inexplicable sensation that has been characterized by some as the feeling of empathy of intuition, is recreated in the body of the viewer through video.
