theo was learning a lot more about pixie’s appearance than he was anticipating. she was blonde. seemed about right. for some reason, theo gravitated towards blondes. which wasn’t a bad thing. he just had a type. “all of those people who joke can go fuck themselves.” he said, before pauses. “sorry.” he cracked his back as he laid in bed and yawned silently. “I will continue to stay on the phone with you for however long you need.” he truly meant that too. he didn’t mind staying on the phone, if anything, he prefered it. falling asleep on the phone was something he’d think he’d enjoy, even if he had never done it before. the only thing theo could really do is listen. he had no right to tell her how to feel, or how to make her father feel. “I dont think you’re selfish. I think you have every right to want your parent around. you have to do what’s best for him.” theo paused.

"what are you apologizing for? i like a man who will stand up for me when i need it," she explained. "but i like it when they know when i can take care of myself, too," was she talking too much? generally, serenity had the confidence to just flirt, but this was different, and she was searching her brain for the reason why. she was stumbling over her words, worrying about boring elton. "even if i start snoring a little?" ren asked, breathing a laugh. "because i do snore. it's not like a fog horn or anything, but i'm told it can be annoying," as he gave his thoughts on the situation, ren nodded as if he could see her, lips sealed tight. after a few seconds of thinking, she opened her mouth. "yeah, but he's tired. it's not just his physical health at this point. um -- my mom cheated on him and he's pretty distraught. how do you cheat on someone who's terminally ill? i just don't get it. make it make sense, elton."

he felt weird getting complimented. not a lot of people knew he was a writer, and it wasn’t something he talked about very much. anytime he did write, he just felt closer to his mother. “you definitely are more intelligent than you think. working with kids has got to be a good way to work your brain. gotta think on your feet.” he leaned his head against the headrest of his bed as he straightened his legs out. “maybe.” he said, softly. he had never read his stories out loud before, but if Pixie asked him to do anything, he would obey. It seemed that she had him wrapped around her finger in some way. He exhaled out of his nose with a small smile. Theo wasn’t going to pretend like he knew what was happening with her dad, but in some ways he did. his mom had gone through years of chemo and radiation. he could see her deteriorating right in front of his eyes. “I don’t either. it takes a toll.” he sighed. “I’m sorry. I wish I could say anything to make it better, but I’m here for you, if you need to talk.” He said that genuinely. Part of him wished he had known her when his mom passed. It didn’t help being alone.

"i’m a blonde preschool teacher. the jokes about my intelligence are plentiful,” serenity rolled her eyes, thinking of all the teachers who weren’t on her side. then again, most of them knew of her past, and they weren’t thrilled that she was allowed to have her job back. their conversation had turned more serious, and she didn’t mind it. there weren’t many people that she could go from joking to serious with in a matter of moments. “just you offering to be here is enough. i know it’s difficult because we can’t see each other, but even if you just... stay on the phone, i know you’re there. even if you’re not talking. it’s reassuring,” she explained, sleep coating her voice, and when she realized it, she shook her head quickly and blinked a few times. “he’s talked to me about how he kind of just... wants to quit, you know? he wants to give up, because the end result of this is that he’s not strong enough for a transplant. being under anesthesia that long would kill him,” she paused, switching the phone to her other ear. “i feel so selfish for asking him to keep going to dialysis, to keep taking all these meds, but i already don’t speak to my mom, and i’m not sure i’m ready to be an orphan.”

She was right. It did sound like something a rich woman would call her small dog. Theo laughed into the phone as she raised the pitch of her voice. Why did he feel so comfortable? Why was he sitting in his apartment, touching the random knick knacks he hadn’t thought to dust off in a year, grinning like a fool to a girl he had never met before. “The new cadillac.” He said in between fits of laughter. “Alright you win. Pixton is better.” He raised his hand defensively as if she could see him. “We are absolutely not going to swap journals.” He shook his head. “That is for me. And me only. Maybe one day I’ll let you have a look at a page.” He made a face in the mirror, as if she caught him staring at himself. “You caught me.” He rolled his eyes playfully as he jumped on his bed. “Green eyes.” He hummed softly. “Like light green, or the kind of green that has brown in it?” Trying not to change but subject but making sure she knew he cared about the situation, he spoke. “How is your dad by the way.”

she let a moment of silence pass before continuing. “i respect that,” serenity stated. “it’s still attractive to me that you’re a writer,” she explained. “the fact that you can articulate and evoke feelings from people with words shows a level of intelligence i will probably never achieve,” she laughed nervously. being a preschool teacher often brought her intelligence into play. other teachers called her a babysitter. it was a sensitive subject for her since she did enjoy her job so much. “will you read me something you’ve written some day?” she inquired, eyebrows raised. “i’d say just let me read it, but there’s something about an author reading his work out loud...” serenity trailed off. “light. not as bright as lime... maybe more like a lima bean. retched things,” she made a puking sound, and then her dad was the conversation. all she could hear was the white noise on the line, and wasn’t sure how to respond. she went with her gut and told the truth. “he’s worn out, babe...” she paused, her eyes darting to her closed bedroom door. “every day that he has dialysis is just another battle. four hours of sitting, hooked up to a machine, unable to do anything but watch tv or sleep... and then the dialysis itself takes all his energy. he’s just ready to come home, eat, and go to bed,” she sighed. “i can’t say that i blame him.”

Her voice was so nice to listen to, and the rambling was cute. “Why is your name first? Why can’t it be Eltie.” He laughed. “That sounds even worse. Yeah, okay. I like Pixton.” He knew shipping was a thing. He had heard of it before, and he did go on social media quite a lot. He could feel his face getting hot, and was glad she couldn’t see him at the moment. Theo wasn’t one to blush. This was a once in a lifetime thing. “It’s okay. My journal is full of pages about a mysterious girl.” He said, pushing his hair back in the mirror. Do you know when people are so invested during phone calls where they just walk around and touch everything they see? Yeah, that was Theo at the moment. Chuckling into the phone. “I mean. It won’t be good.” He said, shaking her head. “I don’t have a million girls lined up at my door. Quite the opposite actually.” Licking his lips, he looked in the mirror at his eyes. “Uh, they’re like hazel-ish. What color are yours, Pix?”

serenity had been on plenty of dates before. she’d gotten dressed up in her finest balenciaga heels and strappy dress and sauntered around a club with a person who wasn’t nearly as interested -- or interesting, to her. here she was, laying in her bed in her dad’s house, having a phone date that made her heart beat faster than any other date had. “eltie sounds like something a rich woman would name her purebred chihuahua,” she paused, cleared her throat, and rose the pitch of her voice. “eltie, dear! come here, do not shit in the wilson’s yard! they’ll key the new cadillac,” she scoffed, but couldn’t help the giggles that followed. “a journal, hmm?” ren hummed softly. “that’s incredibly attractive. a man who can write out his feelings and isn’t afraid to admit it? what have i gotten myself into? are we going to swap journals after our first little tiff?” the blonde kicked the blankets off of her and sat straight up, leaning against the wall. “i can’t see your eyes but i’m fairly sure that the hesitation meant you had to check,” more laughter. it never ceased. she hushed herself audibly. “my dad’s asleep a couple doors down i have to be quieter. but... mine are green. and i didn’t have to check.”

some would argue it wasn’t biking weather, but it wasn’t raining and with a jacket, he could make do. a little bit of wind never hurt anyone, he thought as parked his bike against a storefront, gazing inside and wondering if his bike would be safe here. he still thought about it as he turned on his heel to head inside, smashing fronts with someone almost as quickly as he’d turned. ‘oh gosh, i’m sorry! i wasn’t looking. are you alright?!’ dorian asked in a panic, fingers flying through his hair and his cheeks turned pinker by the second. ‘i could buy you something as an apology? entirely my fault, i’m so sorry.’

she was heading out of to peach their own, a paper bag doubled with a heap of books inside. serenity and her father had been reading almost 24/7, sitting in the living room with whatever baked goods they’d decided on binging that day. the library was cheaper, but she’d noticed the man liked adding books to his shelves as the days went on, and without knowing how many of those days were left -- serenity had no problem spending the money to make him happy. as she opened the door, she ran face first into a man and the bag went toppling to the ground “oof!” she squatted down to gather them, then stood up and stepped out of the doorway as her eyes met the other male’s. “oh, goodness, i’m okay! are you? i didn’t drop a book on your foot, right?” she added with a laugh. “no, absolutely not, there’s nothing to apologize for! we all get sidetracked sometimes. nothing to worry about at all,” she patted his arm reassuringly. “you look familiar. have we met?”

He picked up a football in his hand. The football his dad got him when he was six. And somehow he wanted to bring it along to Georgia. He grinned, the phone between his ear and shoulder as he threw the small football up in the air to catch it. He lifted his pinky up to the phone. “I pinky promise that this is me as well.” He bummed for a second. “Uh, call me Elton.” He said, the first thing that came to his mind. “Sir Elton John.” Theo laughed. “Stupid but it’s better than William. No offense to the guys named William.” Baby. She called him baby. He liked that. Also, he knew she was a teacher but not a preschool teacher. What a difference to her night job. His cheeks started heating up, as he palmed the football. “It’s not good. I am not a singer.” Theo clarifies. He needed to get into the mindset of singing in a higher register. “But oh how it feels so real, lying here with no one near. Only you and you can hear me when I say softly, slowly. Hold me closer, tiny dancer. Count the headlights on the highway..” he faded out. His voice dipping in volume.

"elton, okay,” she mused, the smile never leaving her face. “i like that. elton and pix. our ship name would be pixton. isn’t that crazy? that people ship real people? don’t get me started. i’m pretty into twitter --” serenity let out a laugh. “but i’m not giving that out. you’ll see all my tweets about some mysterious man, and now i have to tell all my followers that man has a sexy voice,” he couldn’t see her, but ren hid her face behind her hands as he sang. taking her lesser lip between her teeth, she took in his sweet voice. “everyone’s a singer. we can all sing. it just depends on how good you are. you’re good enough. actually --” she finally uncovered her face. “can you maybe record that in a voice note? i know, i know, that’s the cheesiest shit ever, but what happens when i need someone to sing me to sleep and you’re off gallivanting with the million girls lined up at your door?” she inquired, twirling one of her blonde locks. “what color are your eyes, elton?” she asked in a dreamy voice.

He laughed into the phone. Maybe it was bit too hard. Biting his bottom lip, Theo smiled. He had debated on lowering his voice a couple of octaves when the phone was ringing, but it all slipped his mind when she started singing. Plus his voice was low enough and had a little bit of slack to it. “It’s okay to say.” He reassured. “I’m nervous too. We’ve been texting for so long and it’s weird to hear your actual voice now.” He commented, standing up and walking around his room. “He’s got good taste in music. Also, you didn’t butcher it. Your voice is soft and soothing. Fuck, is that weird to say? Shit, sorry I cursed.” He wanted to punch himself. Taking a deep breath, he continued. “Uh, I have a soft spot for Tiny Dancer, Elton John. I’m not gonna sing it for you, cause it’ll definitely ruin it.”

smitten. they’d been on the phone for less than five minutes and she was completely smitten. “what if this isn’t my actual voice? you’ve seen catfish. that one woman used ‘the tony voice’,” serenity giggled. “no, i wouldn’t betray you like that. you can’t see me, but --” the blonde paused, sticking her pinky finger up to the phone. “i’m giving you my pinky and promising you that this is the real me,” as she dropped her hand back into the blankets, ren let out a dreamy sigh, humming softly after. “sir -- wait, what can i call you?” she inquired. “curse the fuck away, baby. you’re not offending me any. i’m only a preschool teacher from eight am to noon,” she let a second of silence pass before continuing. “i don’t think you’d ruin it at all. let’s hear it.”

He stayed silent for a second, and was about to speak when he heard a small voice on the other side. Singing. She was singing. He wasn’t expecting that, but honestly. It was better than anything he could’ve been expecting. Her voice was nice. It reminded him of his mother singing to him when he was younger. He would never admit that though. “Hi.” He said, on the other end, the smile could be heard through his voice. “I was nervous you were going to be a catfish, and a male voice would’ve been on the other side.” He sat on the edge of his bed. “I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of the song, but now I don’t want to. It’ll ruin it.”

"you know, i debated gruffing my voice up and saying hello like a garbage man, but decided against it. i didn’t want you to instantly lose trust in me,” she laughed into the phone, uncovering her face from the blankets. “your voice is sexy,” serenity declared, another laugh. “is that okay to say? why am i so nervous?” it wasn’t like serenity to stumble over her words, but it also wasn’t like her to take such a huge risk. “it’s a beautiful song. i’m afraid i butchered it, but i wanted you to get the full effect. my dad actually showed it to me. he’s kind of a music buff, has a lot of time on his hands,” she shrugged. “what’s your favorite song?”

"how else do you tell which it is without sniffing it?" serenity questioned, one eyebrow raised in inqiury."the best part was the mom actually asked if i cleaned it off. um, no? that is absolutely not in my job description. i'm a teacher working at a school, not a daycare. it is a requirement for your child to be potty trained to come to school," she sighed deeply. "see?! this is what my life has amounted to -- poop and school. i need a secret double life..." she trailed off.

"the firemen are pretty gorgeous, i won't lie. there are a few who come in and show the kids the truck. i was always scared of it. like, it's big, red, loud and doesn't care what's in front of it? count me out," she picked her wine glass back up and took a swig, before continuing. "i guess what i meant is i want to hear what's been going on in your life. boys? work?"

Theo stared at the phone. Not sure if he wanted to hear her voice. He liked the mystery of it. Of course, his stomach was twisting in knots. He read the messages over and over again. call me. you can hear my stupid voice. and i’ll tell you my favorite stupid song. He smiled at the way he could hear her attitude through the text. How did he somehow have feelings for a woman that he only knew through onlyfans? That he only saw her body? He hadn’t even seen her face, or know her name. His finger lingered on the call button on her contact. He took a deep breath, and pressed the call button. Once he heard the ringing, his heart started pounding. Did he know what was on the other end. Was it going to be a male voice? Someone who sounded like they were 12? Was he being catfished?

serenity was flying by the seat of her pants. her job would be in jeopardy if anybody found out who she was on that god forsaken website, yet here she was. first, it was the phone number. luckily, it wasn’t in her name, so even if the guy had tried to look her up, he wouldn’t have found her -- but her father. that was the first risk she took. the next was letting him hear her voice. like a school girl, ren was curled up in her bed, blankets over her head in the dead of the night, waiting for the call. as her phone lit up, she cleared her throat and put the phone to her ear. silence. she let it linger for a few seconds before singing her favorite song in a hushed whisper, almost a coo. “drink up baby, look at the stars. i’ll kiss you again between the bars, where i’m seeing you there, with your hands in the air, waiting to finally be caught...” she trailed off, giving him another few seconds of silence before speaking again. “it’s um -- it’s between the bars by elliott smith. if you didn’t know. hi.”
