My spin on the NA TERA guild Enraged’s emblem;

Goal was to retain the silhouette of an “E” for the representation by initial, but spice up the design. I attempted to interpret a monster’s eye as part of the letter as I felt that was not only interesting, but also befit a guild with a PvE focus. Learn about my design process past the break.

Since it’s been a minute since my last post, I thought I would share what I’ve been up to aside from getting back into Dragon Nest. I won’t call it my next exercise, but I think it would be a fun way for anyone interested to delve into my creative process.

About the time I was finishing up Exercise 01, I had the idea to put my own spin on the Enraged emblem. Nothing especially wrong with it, to be sure, but I mainly took on the task to see how I would go beyond the simple initial.

Quick SAI sketches to convey the idea I had in my mind, which was to keep the “E” and angularity present, but introduce more depth. I thought a monster’s eye wouldn’t be too outlandish for a PvE-oriented outfit, and went to work doodling in SAI.

I ended up deciding not to flesh out the rounder interpretation because I felt it would stray too far from the original, but the four-point diamond had problems of its own when I built it in Illustrator. 

Main concerns of mine were the upper imbalance compared to how full the bottom half looked, and after some time, I decided simply to shave much of the top off.

Not perfect, but after some spacing adjustments, inking, and halving the white diamond I implemented as a glimmer to really sell the eye, I arrived at my final product.

Type Exercise 01 | Wrath

What I hope to be the first of numerous logotyping exercises, “Wrath” is my first in Illustrator. I previously used Photoshop for that purpose, but have moved to the former for the ability to alter shapework on the fly and its scalability.

Bonus mid-design shot of a more uppercase-looking “R” that I scrapped because I didn’t feel it was stylistically consistent with how I’d shaped the “W”; nor was it especially slick-looking. Pretty happy with the lower-case I ended up settling on.
