Trick of the Light
( sierra )
The moment she was put on the spot like that, she could feel the lump in her throat getting back. It was hard to speak, because she absolutely didn’t want to sound like she was one of them. She was just curious, wary, disturbed. She wasn’t scared or hateful, right? Or was she. She knew these people believed in what she’d seen, too, but they’d seen it as evil. Was it? Did she have to be scared? She didn’t hope so, because… She didn’t want to become like the kid now in front of her, crying about something Sierra ‘wouldn’t understand.’ Bullshit. “Try me.” She said, her expression remaining blank. She so desperately didn’t want the other to be able to read her.
She took a deep breath and thought for a little while, but then she decided to just start. That was the only way she was going to get somewhere. No matter how ridiculous that still sounded to her. “I saw something impossible happening today.” She said, leaving it at that for just a little bit. Perhaps the boy would say something crazy and she could leave, going on as if nothing had happened.
Credence felt more and more annoyed with her, but he’d never tell her that. He’d rather keep all his feelings to himself than risk the consequence of angering her. He had no idea who she was and what she would do, after all. Perhaps that’s why it bothered him so much that she kept prying. How many more times could he deny her an answer?
He decided to give her a partial lie. “This,” he said, as he raised his hands--palms up--and showed her the wounds on them. This time he managed an expression that was almost as blank as hers. He only gave her a short moment, before he turned away and dropped his hands back to his side.
At least her next words gave away what she was doing here, even though she’d barely said anything yet. “What kind of impossible thing?” he asked, feeling his heart starting to race. He wanted to know, but for the wrong reason. He felt curious and excited, not scared and disgusted.
