Trick of the Light

At least he got some kind of answer out of her, although it didnât say an awful lot. People came here for all kinds of reasonsâalthough visitors werenât particularly commonâand often they wanted to know what they âdid hereâ. They were the same kind of people whoâd show up to the scene of an accident, because it intrigued them.
Heâd stopped crying, but his eyes felt dry and he was afraid he wasnât fooling anyone. âYou wouldnât understand,â he replied finally. If it wasnât the truth he wouldnât have said it, because he was terrified of angering people, but this time he hadnât been able to restrain himself.
âWhat do you want to know?â
The moment she was put on the spot like that, she could feel the lump in her throat getting back. It was hard to speak, because she absolutely didnât want to sound like she was one of them. She was just curious, wary, disturbed. She wasnât scared or hateful, right? Or was she. She knew these people believed in what sheâd seen, too, but theyâd seen it as evil. Was it? Did she have to be scared? She didnât hope so, because... She didnât want to become like the kid now in front of her, crying about something Sierra âwouldnât understand.â Bullshit. âTry me.â She said, her expression remaining blank. She so desperately didnât want the other to be able to read her.
She took a deep breath and thought for a little while, but then she decided to just start. That was the only way she was going to get somewhere. No matter how ridiculous that still sounded to her. âI saw something impossible happening today.â She said, leaving it at that for just a little bit. Perhaps the boy would say something crazy and she could leave, going on as if nothing had happened.
