My Opinion

In my opinion, I have been presenting all this information to argue that the most reasonable theory is that the USSR had some involvement with the hikers deaths. One reason this is the most reasonable theory is that there were reports of military activity in the area. If the military was testing secret weapons, they wouldn’t want any witnesses. The military was also speculated to arrive at the scene of the deaths before the search, possibly to cover up evidence. The tests could also explains the injuries, orbs, and radiation. Just to reiterate, this is my opinion and what I was trying to argue for, hope you enjoyed my posts!

Theory #4 - The Yeti

This theory states that group was killed by a menk (Yeti). The skiers' injuries were caused by a creature with supernatural strength. This photo from Thibeaux’s camera also supports this theory, but since it is so blurry this could be a hiker, but conversely it could also be the yeti.

Theory #3 - Aliens

This theory’s claims that a UFO could explain the mysterious glowing orbs found in the sky near the Pass. This theory also claims that a UFO could cause the internal damage the hikers experienced. On Krivonischenko’s camera, a photo shows the “orbs”.

Theory #2 - Avalanche

This theory states that an avalanche caused the deaths of the hikers. This would explain hypothermia and the tent being cut open from the inside, but ultimately falls short to being plausible due to there not being any obvious signs of an avalanche having taken place.

Theory #1 - USSR Cover up

This theory states that the campsite was near Russian parachute bomb test sights, which there are records of them being tested by the USSR in the area around the time the hikers were there. The bombs explode in midair, causing concussion like injuries, which would explain the strange injuries and radiation found on the hikers. Another fact which supports this claim is that the USSR withheld information from the public regarding the incident until the 1980′s.

Facts About the Incident

Six of the group members died of hypothermia and three of fatal injuries.

There were no indications of other people nearby on Kholat Syakhl apart from the nine travelers.”

The tent had been ripped open from within.

The victims had died 6 to 8 hours after their last meal.

Traces from the camp showed that all group members left the campsite of their own accord, on foot.

To dispel the theory of an attack by the indigenous Mansi people, Dr Vozrozhdenny stated that the fatal injuries of the three bodies could not have been caused by another human being, "because the force of the blows had been too strong and no soft tissue had been damaged".

Released documents contained no information about the condition of the skiers' internal organs.

There were no survivors of the incident.

Reports of slight radiation on the bodies.

The verdict was that the group members all died because of a “compelling natural force”.

Another group of hikers (31 miles south of the incident) reported that they saw strange orange spheres in the sky to the north on the night of the incident.

 Similar spheres were observed in Ivdel and adjacent areas continually during the period from February to March 1959, by various independent witnesses (including the meteorology service and the military). However, these sightings were not noted in the initial investigation in 1959, and these various independent witnesses only came forward years later.

The Discovery

The push to start searching for the hikers started from when family members received news that the hikers did not send their telegram on February 12th. This started to cause panic so on February 20th, a search team was formed. The army and search team worked together to find the missing hikers. On February 26th, the rescue party had found the hikers empty and torn down tent. Rescuers followed footprints that led from the tent to a nearby forest. It was there that they found traces of a fire which led the search party right to the bodies of Krivonischenko and Doroshenko. Both of them only had underwear on, like they were in a rush to escape something. Spread out between a pine tree and the tent, the search party also found the bodies of Dyatlov, Kolmogorova, and Slobodin. The position the bodies were in suggests that they were trying to return to the tent, but got lost and died. The remaining four victims were not found until May 4th, when some snow had melted away, revealing the bodies of Zolotaryov, Kolevatov, and Brignolles in one part of the ravine and Dubinina in another. The bodies found in the ravines had articles of clothing on from previously dead members of the group, such as  Dubinina’s foot being wrapped in Krivonischenko’s wool trousers. The bodies were recovered and buried in Yekaterinburg.

The Expedition

In January of 1959, Igor Dyatlov formed a group with nine others to trek across the Ural Mountains, specifically around the mountain Kholat Syakhl. The group had intended to make it to Otorten, another mountain. The group consisted of Igor Alekseyevich Dyatlov, Yuri Nikolayevich Doroshenko, Lyudmila Alexandrovna Dubinina, Yuri (Georgiy) Alexeyevich Krivonischenko, Alexander Sergeyevich Kolevatov, Zinaida Alekseevna Alamogordo, Rustem Vladimirovich Slobodin, Nikolai Vladimirovich Thibeaux-Brignolles, Semyon (Alexander) Alekseevich Zolotaryov, and Yuri Yefimovich Yudin. On January 27, 1959, the group started their trek towards their goal, until Yuri Yudin had to turn back due to health reasons. He headed back home while other nine continued on. On January 31, the group had made it to the edge of a wooded area near the pass where they cached food for the return. On February 1, the hikers moved through the pass, but snowstorms got them off of their track, and then found themselves on top of Kholat Syakhl. They then set up camp on the mountain side, never to be seen alive again.
