kaylar.
“Have you?” This puzzles Kaylar more than anything – the melody is old, distant and not often heard on this side of the galaxy. He had heard it in an old collection of music devices from a seller’s booth the last time he had been on an active-duty assignment, unsure of its origins. The song itself seemed without a real home until Kaylar had given it one inside Cassian’s music box.
“Where have you heard it? I did not even know what it was called until I did more digging – had to record the song and upload it to the search network just to find it’s name and artist. It’s called The Rainbow Connection, if that helps at all.” He pauses for a moment, choosing his next words carefully.
“Cassian really enjoys it as well.”
He seems just as puzzled as she was -- as she had only heard it for a span of a few months on a small loop of songs before it had dissolved out of existence, to the point that she almost could believe it had never existed in the first place. Which is why to find Kaylar humming it so nonchalantly seemed to floor her slightly ; shaking her head as he spoke. “I --... the name means nothing, honestly. Years back, while I was still stationed on Flare Base, I will following up a few lose ends on a mission and I found it on a nearby broadcast. There was never any words -- not on that song, or any of the others -- or any explanation for the loop of songs. It was just there one day for a few months ... -- and then it wasn’t.” She gives a hollow laugh with a small shrug of her shoulders, “I had almost convinced myself that I imagined the music since I haven’t heard it since.”
kaylar.
starter for @resilientblood !
It’s typical of Kaylar Andor to withdraw when Cassian is away. Though always willing to speak with others and engage in conversation, he does not always feel as in-tune with the world around him when Cassian is gone. It’s a quick mission, he knows. Very low-risk. But even still, Kaylar finds himself spending more hours at his desk, and less amid the rest of the New Republic and his old friends of Rogue One.
The old song on Cassian’s music box ( an earth melody that Kaylar has grown very fond of ) is one he finds himself humming under his breath, more often than not, when Cassian is away, sometimes even singing it aloud as he is when Zypher passes by his room. He scarcely notices her, squinting at a small piece of engine machinery that needed repair as he sings, quietly to himself.
He picks his head up when she stops by the door, giving her a pleasant smile though he remains seated at his desk. “Oh. Hello, Zypher. My singing isn’t bothering you, is it?”
She had been around Kaylar more than enough to know how he acted when Cassian was away ; withdrawing into himself, as if part of him forgot how to properly act like himself without her brother around. It SADDENED her, as she had been told a handful of times from both men that it was CASSIAN who truly brought out the human side of the former droid. She tried to connect -- but she wasn’t Cassian. She couldn’t see into him like the Commander could ; couldn’t tell exactly what he needed to hear and when. And it hurt more so that she couldn’t help him. When did she get soft? Sentiment. A silly, funny thing -- Albeit, what catches her off guard is the tune that he’s humming, passing his room by chance ( she wasn’t checking on him, she wasn’t ... -- ). She pauses, lingers before taking a few steps into the room.
“No,” she starts slowly, as if carefully picking her words apart before replying to him, “I didn’t hear it until -- ... I was close, but ...” she trails off, shrugging before giving a frustrated shake of her head. “It sounds familiar, the tune you’re humming. I’ve heard it before.”

I brought a knife to the gunfight. I am the knife / I am all blade.
Clementine von Radics, from “Vigil,” Dream Girl (via cherylblosscm)
jyn.
Jyn nodded again - she couldn’t exactly fill in the blanks. There was only so much she knew, even if she felt as though she had known Cassian for years rather than a few days. Only a few days, only a week, really. He had been in and out of a bacta tank for longer than she had actually known him.
“He went there with me, because he believed in me when the Council did not. When we were climbing to send the plans, he was shot at, and fell. I thought he was dead, but he managed to climb his way up the rest of the way. He saved me, in the end, so that I could send the plans. He lost consciousness a few minutes after we escaped the tower, just before they managed to pick us up off the beach. Absolute miracle they did. I think he’s still alive just because he’s so stubborn.”
The chasm of years that was between then and now was far too much to say that she knew anything about him anymore. This woman, JYN ERSO, likely knew more about Cassian than she did ; more about who had become rather than the young boy she had known when she was still barely old enough to understand what they were fighting for -- and who. “Stubborn as a hutt still sounds about right --” she breaths, a weary and wry smile tugging at the corner of her lips before it disappeared and she was looking to the doorway of the medbay. “I’m glad he had someone to believe in who believed in him.”

jyn.
Right. Rebels didn’t talk about their losses. She certainly hadn’t, for the entirety of her life, and now, everyone thought they knew her. They looked at her and saw a criminal, or a survivor, or the daughter of an extremist, or the daughter of a hero, or the daughter of… the daughter of an Imperial. None of it was true, and she couldn’t hide any of it, some of her oldest and deepest secrets, all out in the open.
“He said enough… I suspect he’ll be surprised to see you when he wakes up.” So the girl had thought her brother was dead… if she made it to this base, she had to be the real thing, and they did look similar… “When’s the last time you saw your brother?”
She’s letting out another low breath -- letting her gaze once more flicker down the hallway; because it was easier. Easier than thinking about Fest -- a place she hadn’t seen since she was too young to properly even comprehend what she was fighting for. The rage she understood, even at that age. But, the true enemies? The war itself? Zypher hadn’t understood until she was older -- until she was an orphan of war, believing to be without family; and letting herself accept that much, as wallowing it would only make her weaker. “I was surprised to see his name in the mission report for Scarif,” she admitting ; as she had requested leave hours after she finally allowed herself to comprehend what she had read on the datapad. Her rank still didn’t give her clearance to a spy’s data file, so she came to Yavin herself to make sure instead. “Nearly eighteen years ago.”

“Start and finish, every hour or so… they have other patients, and there isn’t much to do save to check that he’s not awake, and to make certain he’s still alive.” She’s making a joke, maybe, but she has to make it a joke, because she can’t seriously consider the idea that, after everything, Cassian wouldn’t survive.
“I don’t check on him every time they leave, because occasionally they check to see if I’m still here - and I do leave, at times, but they won’t be in there much longer.” She doesn’t know what else to add, because she should say something, maybe, or ask? “I didn’t… he didn’t mention a sister.”
Despite the fact that she can hear the joking manner in her tone -- it doesn’t stop Zypher’s eyes from flickering to the side for a brief moment. She didn’t spend over a decade of thinking the worst -- thinking that Cassian followed their father in death as far back as when the Republic was the monster that the Empire had become -- and leave her secure position on Flare Base for him to just die ... -- She’s shaking her head a little bit before dropping it back against the wall behind her, “Rebels don’t talk about their past often -- especially concerning someone we lost. Or thought we lost. Everyone’s got someone they lost if we’re here ; nothing is going to change to dwell on it.”

Whatever battle was going on in this woman, Cassian’s sister’s, head, well… the fist that had been clenched a few moments before had relaxed, and Jyn gave the woman a nod. Her back hit the wall once more, relaxing against it, and she glanced to the other side of it, an easy space to recline against. They could wait together, then. Wait until… well, until.
“Like I said, they’re not letting anyone in. Not even the General.” She wasn’t going to tell Zypher why… if this was his sister, she didn’t need to know what Jyn thought on the matter, how bad it seemed… only the facts. The fact was, he was still alive, and that was what mattered. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t get in to see him.”
Her arms remained crossed -- a way to make herself sturdier. A way to make herself feel bigger than she was, even if it was enclosing her body against herself -- she felt like it was easier to defend something stronger, smaller. She glances down the hall for a fleeting moment before slowly returning her gaze back to Jyn. She rose a brow at the implications -- but said nothing on it ; catching on fairly quickly to the suggestion that rested in between her words. “How long do they usually stay in there with him?”

… Perhaps he did have a sister, but that made zero sense. Still, Jyn’s face didn’t budge as she rose herself up a little, chin raised in an act of defiance. Sister or not, Jyn wasn’t moving until she saw Cassian alive. “Sergeant Jyn Erso.” Melshi had made it official before Scarif, after all. She might as well throw out the rank, even if she hadn’t decided to stay. “And they are not letting anyone in - so you will still have to wait.”
There was an array of emotions that flickered over the other’s features -- each one more unreadable than the last. She’s folding her arms over her chest -- tucking down her chin for a beat as she seems to be mentally battling with her own thought process. On one hand, she wanted to fight it. She wanted to raise hell just to get in the door the woman was standing by to get a flicker of hope that he was truly in there. On the other, she remembered the woman’s name -- right beneath Captain Cassian Andor’s. And that gave her pause; because for all of her irrational flaws, she did know how to respect someone else. “Sergeant Erso,” she then echoes after a moment, turning her gaze back on her with a careful, weighed expression; but she seemed to have deflated slightly as her eyes flickered to the door with a low breath.

“I’m the one that dragged him in here, half dead, so again, if you’re going in there, you will have to physically walk around me - they’re not letting anyone in, and he doesn’t have any family.” He had made it pretty clear he was alone, so- “You’ll have to wait in line.”
“Sergeant Zypher Andor ; I would like to beg to differ -- “ she bit out, stepping into the other’s space merely as a warning ; her tone sharp, albeit lacking threat for the present, “And I would like to see my brother.”
