We had been relocated to a much safer area than our third story apartment. The people running the place had it set up to where there would be entertainment for the younger people living there and Calvin was definitely been taking advantage of that. He was sitting on the floor, playing a game on the small little television they had provided for our room. I laid on the bottom bunk of our bed, watching him play, he wasn’t exactly the best but, hey, watching something was better than watching nothing. Eventually my eyes began to slowly close and open. Close. Open. Close. I had fallen asleep. I’m not sure how much time had gone by, but I awoke to the door open, and the television off. Calvin nowhere in sight. Oh no. I ran out the door, knocking on the other peoples doors a well, trying to see if he just went to a friends room or something. Each person I asked said they didn’t know where he was. I went to the front desk, they said they hadn’t seen him. Thank god, that meant he was still in the building. Climbing up the stairs to each floor, calling out for him, I make it to the roof where I see him, looking out over the buildings. In the distance, I see something almost incomprehensible.
Though he was sixteen now, Calvin was still all over everything about Namulia. And on the day it arrived, it was no different. He, along with myself, stood on the balcony, watching the planet approach, it almost seemed like it would hit our own, but Calvin reassured me that it would not over and over again. Thankfully, he didn’t know what was to come. There had been five other Namus that came to earth. Each with their own message, and the last one brought a message back to Namulia. We needed resources, and at this point, we would take them by force. As we saw Namus come down, I brought Calvin back inside. It wouldn’t be safe here for a while.
I could practically feel Calvin’s excitement from the thirty mile distance between his school and the apartment. I had been listening to his radio since, honestly, what else was I going to do. The radio’s electric words spoke about the most recent update on that planet that Calvin was always raving about. I had heard dad talking about it the other day over the phone with a coworker, how it could possibly be a great source of energy if it we were somehow able to capture the planet. Though, that would be impossible. And even if it was possible, no one would try it as it sounds ridiculous. The radio spoke. “Today on NYSN, we have an extra special report on the rogue planet TARPT-R5F.” Oh goody, what would it be this time, more conspiracy theories. “What we had originally thought to be a burning fragment of the planet flying ahead of it, has turned out to be an inhabitant of said planet.” What? Holy shit. What? Are… Are they saying that Calvin was right? “This inhabitant has come to our planet to inform us of what is to come. A recording of an interview between the Extraterrestrial and a NASA researcher has been provided to us to educate the masses.” There was a noise, then the conversation started. “Hello, this is Helena Klerk, here with one of the extraterrestrials from the planet TARPT-R5F, here to conduct an interview with such being. Believe it or not, their language is extremely similar to ours. Now sir, would you mind introducing yourself?” “Hello, my name is Jimmy, a pink blood from the northern zone of Namulia, or, as you all seem to call it, TARPT-R5F.” Jimmy? Really? This had to be fake. “We have a plethora of questions to ask you, Jimmy, and we’ll start with, what I’m sure everyone else listening is thinking; Why is your name one that sounds very earth-like?” “Oh it’s because I’m quite old, We try our best not to reuse names for our inhabitants, thankfully I spawned before they had to start using objects as names.” Jimmy chuckles. “Is that so? Still, we’d like to know why it seems to be an earth name, has your species been watching us?” “No we haven’t been watching you all, personally I can’t believe your species hasn’t figured it out, we have sent our own down here before.” He pauses, “Though I assume that was quite a while ago now” His voice was quiet. “I don’t know if you’re ready for me to absolutely destroy every single religion.” “Excuse me?” She sounded confused. “So, what if I told you if you die, you don’t go to heaven, hell, or wherever else that different religions like to say you go. The closest your people have gotten is probably reincarnation.” “That’s incredible. Are you saying that… Your species is reincarnated humans?” “Bullseye!” Jimmy chuckles again. “Lemme tell you that whenever any of your religious people get to our planet they lose their minds.” “Would you mind elaborating on how that happens?” “Of course! So, first off, we have this system on our planet where it takes the energy signals that humans let out when they die and creates a new body for those signals, completely copying them into that Namus mind,” “Namu?” “Yes, our species name is “Namulians” or “Namus” for short. We’re called that since, you know, we live on a planet called “Namulia”.” “Ah, I see. Do you know how your species came to be?” “No ones exactly sure, but, from what we heard from a select few Namus who have been on the planet since the beginning, the creator is living in the core of the planet.” “How is that possible?” “Well, presumably he died from some sort of fire or something so he would have no trouble living there.” “Please elaborate.” “Oh yeah! Forgot to say that we are completely immune to whatever we died from as a human” “Anything?” “Mhmm! We even got these weird Namus that died with their body completely obliterated, so their body on Namulia is like, all unstable and stuff. Kinda like some sort of goo.” “Fascinating. And what happens when a Namu dies?” “We get spawned one more time, but after that one we can’t respawn again. But hey, that’s a good trade off for getting our human memories back” “Do you not remember them the first time you die?” “Not at all, a lot of us see that as a good thing, however. It’s kinda like… Starting over.” “I see,” There is the sound of ruffling papers. “Could you tell me about anything that differs from our language and your own?” “Of course! So, first off, some words in your vocabulary have no meaning in our own. Like, um, for example how about boy and girl? Or man and woman, or any gendered terms to be honest.” “Does your society not have genders then?” “No we do, it’s just not like your own. Our gender system is based more on our blood colors, though, recently there have been Namus using the earthian gender system. For example, I have pink blood, meaning I would be called pi or pir.” “What other blood colors are there?” “Any color you could imagine. Pink, blue, red, yellow, black, green, etcetera.” “Doesn’t it get confusing with so many?” “Not really, we’ve been living there for over three billion years. So it’s kinda easy to get used to.” “I see.” She ruffles more papers, at least, I assumed it was her messing with the papers. “Could you describe what you look like to our listeners?” “Yes, so, first off, imagine like a human but with a slight snout. And also covered in feathers” “That description is, um, frankly terrifying compared to how you actually look.” “It’s not that far off though. We wear something similar to human shirts, except they are attached to us, and made of a material similar to our skin.” “Oh! I was not aware that was skin. Is it alright if I touch it.” “Go ahead!” Movement is heard, presumably from the alien moving. “Interesting.” More movement. “Our biology is a bit weird though, whereas humans have ribs, we have more of a breast plate. And our heart is located in the exact middle of our chests.” “Fascinating.” Papers ruffle. “Our next question is about what types of flora and fauna you have on your planet?” “To be honest there isn’t much, we don’t have any other animals on the planet other than us. And plants have only began to grow recently due to our own terraforming.” “How long do your species live then?” “We live until something kills us.” “You must have quite the overpopulation issue then.” She chuckles. “Oh not at all, our respawn system is somehow setup to spread out each spawning across time. We’re not even sure how exactly it works.” “Your species has essentially created time travel then?” “More or less, yes we have.” “That’s incredible!” “I mean, it helps with overpopulation, which looks like is your world’s problem” “Can you tell me more about the “respawn system”?” “Sure, so, first off, it takes different energies from five different universes, four without a respawn system, and one, our own, with one.” “I’m sorry are you telling me the multiverse theory is true?” “Yeah, kinda.” The creak of a chair could be heard, and then afterwards a very quiet “oh my god.” “You’re getting all this right?” She said to someone, presumably the person recording. “Alright,” “So, can you elaborate on what you told us earlier, about the trajectory of your planet?” Another creak could be heard. “Our planet seems to be in trajectory with your own, but you have no need to worry. We are only here to orbit your planet. As your movies seem to like aliens to say, we come in peace.” “And that is it for the interview that we received. During this broadcast, we have been informed that their planet will be in orbit of ours in the next few years, and we should welcome them with open arms.” The radio returns to its commercials. Holy shit.
JULY 2nd, 2069
I turn over and go back to sleep.
Birthdays are strange. As a child, you would think that the presents you’d receive as you get older would only get better and better. But as your interests become more specific and as you start to realize the worth of items, meaningful gifts are hard to come by.
Especially when your family starts to run out of money.
Trust me, when I say I love my brother dearly I truly mean it. But, whereas he got a telescope that my dad saved up for for such a long time for his eleventh birthday (and everything he got from his friends as well), I got a brittle pair of sunglasses that couldn’t have been more than two dollars for my nineteenth. Needless to say, I wasn’t in the best of moods.
Calvin was asleep as our father came in with a small box. His steps into the room causing the floorboards to creak horridly. His job had been requiring him to take more hours as wages all across the workforce had been reduced, again. Across the room, I could see the time was 11:43 pm. Dad’s attire was dirtier than usual, though, that was expected as we needed to ration water now. Cleaning clothes was no longer something we could do as often.
Without a word, he left the gift on my dresser and left with a heavy sigh.
Summer was a great time for us. Not due to being out of school or the weather being warm enough for us to swim, but rather that both of our birthdays being in the first two months. Calvin’s birthday was June eleventh, today. Streamers hung from the ceiling all over the living room with a banner hanging before the kitchen area that read “Happy birthday Calvin!” in big, bubble letters. Calvin had had friends from school over earlier for a party. Plates and cups with remnants of the food and drinks that they had were on both the dining table and the coffee table. There was gift wrapping paper littering the living room floor with a large empty box labeled “Telescope” that our dad had gotten him. That would be fun for me to clean later. He had saved up for four months to buy him such a thing, but I guess nothing was too good for his perfect little son. I had been forced to save up for a little portable radio for him. Currently, Calvin was sitting out on the balcony, listening to the radio and looking through the telescope. For now, my father and I sat at the table with a half eaten cake, playing a one on one game of blackjack. “Hey, Kris,” My dad started, “Go check on him, see if he wants to play too.” Sigh and get up, I guess this day was all about Calvin so I could deal with it. My feet brush past the abundance of wrapping paper on the floor as I make my way to the balcony. He seemed so focused on whatever he was looking at through it. I place a hand on his shoulder, causing him to jump a bit. “Hey man, dad wants to know if you wanna play blackjack with us.” “Nah, the next report on that planet is coming in soon!” He has a big smile on his face. “What’s so special about a silly planet?” Oops, shouldn’t have said that, his smile turns to a pout. “Haven’t you been listening to all the reports and stuff? It isn’t orbiting anything and it straight up looks like it’s being controlled! And they think there could be life on it!” His eyes sparkle, “don’t you think that’s really really cool?!” “They’re probably just trying to hype people up, it’s probably just nothing” “No!! I can see it! It looks like there’s life or something! Just look!” He scoots over, motioning for me to look through the scope. I move over, looking through it “You better not bump it! I’ve got it set perfectly!” “I’m not gonna bump it!” I reply, slightly annoyed. Through the telescope I see a planet, it was quite blurry so I could only assume it was really really far away. “Well? What do you think?” He said. As I look out, I see a big goofy smile on his face. “What do you think?” “I think it’s really really cool! I they’re saying it’s going to miss us by a long shot but like,” He pulls out a notebook, flipping over to a page with with drawings of the planet, along with a lot of weird trajectory stuff, “It looks like its gonna get really close! Kris!” His eyes sparkle. “What if there are aliens! What if the whole things like a ship and they visit and stuff!” He bounces in place, practically vibrating with excitement. “That sounds pretty cool man” I smile, I figure he and his conspiracy theory friends had come up with all of that. It was possible there was life on the planet, but it was very unlikely it was any intelligent life. It’s probably just some rogue planet and we’re lucky it isn’t on a collision course with our own planet. I sit back from the telescope, feeling the warm outside air in front and the cold air of our air conditioning on my back, mixing to make something that was honestly quite comfortable. Despite the warm air, Calvin still wore a large winter jacket. Though if you looked at the two of us side by side, you’d think that it was I who needed the jacket. Our body types contrasted similarly to the air that we currently felt before and behind us. Calvin scooted towards me, obviously wanting to look through the scope again. I move over due to his silent request, and sit close to the radio. Our dad would just have to wait for me to get back in later if he wanted to play. After a few more minutes of commercials, the radio station that Calvin was listening to came back to its main content. The station wasn’t the clearest, but hey, what were you gonna do in our day and age. “Tonight on NYSN, we have a very special report on the rogue planet: TARPT-R5F. Our sources have been following the irrational trajectory of this planet for the past seven years and we are still unsure of what causes it to accelerate and decelerate as it does. However, through observations, the planet seems to be in a tidal-locked state despite not orbiting any known object. On the subject of theorized existence of flora and fauna on the planet, supported by the blotchy green and tan surface and what we can only assume to be two large oceans, our sources have come to the conclusion that there is a high probability of intelligent life on the TARPT-R5F. Furthermore, there is continued investigation on what the odd corona around the planet seems to be. As the planet gets closer to entering our solar system, our knowledge on the planet only expands more and more, and we will continue to update the people on any further discoveries.” Calvin was squirming with happiness next to me. “Kris! There might be aliens!!! Oh my god aliens!” He said, getting up and running inside. “Aliens dad! Did you hear that! Aliens!” We were gonna be hearing about this for the next few weeks, if not months.
Pop pop pop. The lights flickered and our excitement turned to fear and worry. My brother watched as my grip on the old game controller loosened. The television that sat in front of us showed nothing but a dark, empty screen. Just moments ago, it was full of life, flashing a multitude of colors as our character jumped his way to the final boss. Sadly, as he had just realized, the energy needed to run both the television and the console was too great for our home’s setup. Something behind the television began to smoke. “Shit, open the window!” I yelled to my brother, who quickly hopped out of the seat behind me as I got off of the floor. He fiddled with the strange pull tabs that the window had, which made him take a few moments to open it. I, on the other hand, quickly turned off the system. Killing off the small, red, flashing light on the front of it as I pulled back our entertainment center. Yeah the cords were old, but we didn’t think they’d start sparking and smoking. On closer inspection, it wasn’t smoking bad. It had only been a few puffs as the socket shorted out. I pulled out the plug of both the television and the console. Around the sockets was some sort of black substance, probably due to them shorting out or something. We didn’t think something like this would happen. Our dad was out, and we MIGHT have been snooping around his closet when we found this game system. It looked cool, and we really didn’t want to head outside. “Calvin, put the game up!” I yell at him, and he quickly grabs it, running off to our dad’s bedroom. As he does so, I hop up, running over to the kitchen, grabbing a rag to erase any evidence that we messed up the plugs. Two quick honks from outside. The sound of a car door locking. Dad was home. I quickly run back to the television, cleaning the socket, plugging it back in, and pushing the entertainment center back. As I run to me and my brother’s shared room, I hear the door unlocking. He could've only seen a glimpse of me as I ran by. Hopefully he didn’t think it was suspicious that I was running in the house. Once in the room, I jump face first onto my bed, it creaking terribly. “Did he see anything?” Calvin says, looking at me from across the room. “Probably not, maybe me running but that’s it.” Calvin lets out a sigh of relief, slumping against the wall, the poster behind him crinkling a bit. “Dammit!” He yells out, quickly moving off the wall to make sure his poster was okay. “Neptune! Neptune speak to me!” He fake cries and caresses one of the corners, it had ripped from him laying on it. “Dude, you ripped a whole ass planet in half!” I chuckled as I watched him panic about the poster. Calvin cared a bit TOO much about them. “This is serious Kris! Oh heck where’s the tape…” He gets off the bed, going over to my dresser and looking through the top drawers. “Hey!” I turn over, sitting on my knees and moving over to him, “Why are you looking through my stuff!” “Because I know you have tape!” He begins to look through the drawer, taking stuff out and putting it on top of the dresser. “Hey! Stop it!” I try to push him away, and in a quick moment of impulsive decisions, I close the drawer. On his hand. Oh no. “Ow shit!” Calvin yelps out. “Boys!” Our father yells from the other room. Both of us go completely quiet. Footsteps. Getting closer and closer. “We’re not fighting!” I say after a moment. The door opens, and our dad walks in. “Why is the TV not working.” He says, looking pissed. He knew something was up. “What do you mean?” I respond, trying to play dumb. “The TV stand isn’t against the wall. What did you do.” He wasn’t going to take any of my bullshitting today and both me and Calvin knew it. “W-we wanted to watch some tv! A-and it just suddenly didn’t work!” Calvin nervously says. Dammit, don’t try to cover for me. “Kris tried to fix it! B-but it didn’t work” He looks down, taking his hand out of the drawer. “We’re sorry.” A moment goes by. Our dad sighs. “Go clean up, I brought dinner.” He leaves, not closing the door fully. I knew that he didn’t buy that, and I would be hearing something about it later when Calvin goes to sleep.
