AT THEODORE ART, MICHELLE VAUGHAN’S PASTELS PUT CONSERVATIVE CULTURE BEHIND US
THE DAILY PIC: This image of Kellyanne Conway is one of the 40 pastel portraits in Michelle Vaughan’s installation “A Movement of Women,” at Theodore Art in Brooklyn. The other 39 pastels are also of female conservatives, from Anita Bryant to Nancy Reagan to Laura Ingraham.
Although it’s pretty clear from the press release that Vaughan, like most artists, is a progressive, in her project she’s careful not indulge in any explicit attack on the subjects in her portraits, or even to comment on them. But the style of her portraits is comment enough: Her four-square pastels could come straight from the walls of a small-town hairdresser, circa 1940–just about the last era when hand-made depictions still had a truly representational function in our culture, simply pointing at a subject rather than giving it an aesthetic or artistic gloss. In their very look, and regardless of their subjects, Vaughan’s images do a perfect job of capturing the fundamentally nostalgic, backwards-looking essence of conservative culture, and its inevitable failure to make sense of, or in, today’s world.
