I can't help but think that Rick 's pursuit of Interdimensional Technology represents his own version of Pandora's box.
There's just something about his natural curiosity being his own doom.
Zeus, give Pandora the box because he knew that she would open it. It was written that she would possessed such curiosity, he made her to be curious, he knows what will happen, because he built humanity to be naturally curious.
And I cant help but think theres this cosmic entity that has written Rick to have a natural curiosity, to pursue multidimensional travel.
IDK how to explain it, but there's something about how Rick claims that he's God and even killled God at one point, and yet! Have this cosmic equivalent exchange of chaos and destruction in return of obtaining scientific knowledge of Multidimensional travel.
Its like that quote from Fullmetal Alchemist, where; "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost."
Its like Rick cant obtain Interdimensional knowledge without sacrificing something.
To Professor Rick; it was his Job, his wife and even cost him his life, all because he wanted to grasp Interdimensional technology.
Like, you cant even deny the Interdimensional knowledge, you HAVE to possessed it! If you deny it, then there's clear consequences of it.
Our OG Rick had got his life fuck over cause of some guy who wanted to give him infinite knowledgeable and infinite possibilities and he got punished for denying it. Punished because he choose the alternative; to get out of the narrative and choose a much more peaceful life. And what did he get for denying it? Death. Death to the people he loves, Death to the peaceful life he wanted to pursue, Death to his former self and is now transformed into this hollow husk of a man who's only goal is revenge, and what did he get for it? After all these years of pursuit? Fucking nothing, he stands there drenched in the blood of his enemy and he felt nothing, but do you know what he does have?...Morty.
Morty is his only constant.
God mightve written you to inevitability become an alcoholic, nihilistic piece of shit, but atleast in exchange, you have infinite knowledge in your head and a constant shadow by your side.
In a world of chaos and infinite possibilities, there's always a guarantee...that a Rick is never without his Morty, through thick and thin, through violence and comfort; a Rick will always have their Morty.
Thats what that green swirling portal had given him: The certainty, the affirmation, the promise; that a Rick Sanchez will always have a Morty Smith by their side. It's like a double edged sword that came with the chaos; an apology, for all the lost, violence and nihilism that this technology had given him.
There's something about the existence of the Portal gun that leads all roads into chaos and madness, but also having this fate on meeting each other. Like, once you have obtained a portal gun it automatically gives you an infinite ticket, taking you to infinite rides where it all leads down to inevitability founding one other.
I just wanna point out that our Rick created the portal gun so that he can find the fucker that killed his family. But the gun didn't lead him to Prime Rick, it teleports him to a Morty.
And Professor Rick did have a Morty, but he died before he gets the chance to spend time with him. But because of Multidimensional technology, he gets to meet his grandson; he gets the chance to cross paths with a Morty. And it's all thanks to the existence of that swirling green portal.
...All portals have lead back to each others, all Ricks get the chance to meet a Morty...like an inivsible string, it all ties back to them, blue will eventually meets its yellow...and they are both each other's strengths and weaknesses, both each other's comfort and destruction...
...And poor Professor Rick, he has no Goddam clue what he had just brought into his home.
He has no idea that fate was running on it's course the moment he had laid eyes on Morty.
And Btw, none of this would've happen if both of them just stayed away.
We can see on the latest episode that a Morty and a Rick can live a "somewhat" peaceful life. They were both great when they were apart, they were both doing good, achieving alot of things when they're not together, can even reach their own potential if they dont cross paths...
...but then, Morty intentionally did.
Morty got into funeral hopping because he was curious and Rick reached his doomed because he was curious and obsessed with Dimensional technology, all of this wouldn't have happened if both of them weren't so damn curious, it's like this domino effect that they could've prevented if they just stayed away, but nope! They just have to go, they just have to know!
it really is a genetic disease.
It's already in them! Rick had been sober for years and all it took is just one person to believe in him, not his wife, but Morty.
He went back to his old habits and unconsciously ended up playing the same tune, played the same roles, put on the same shoes and ended up dragging Morty across the room in the middle of the night, just like Morty's Rick and any other Rick in the multiverse.
Like, it was written in the starts; he cant escape it, it was written both on their genes, they were born to play this part until their deaths...
And he doesnt have a a fucking clue about it. He didnt know about this written narrative.
He had met his downfall all because of a boy who whispered sweet nothings to him, one that held the same eyes as him, one that drowns him on encouragement, blinded him with so much trust that he lets him lead him back to a path of self destruction...
...he was doing good in life, got a good job and an amazing wife and he had lost it all...all because he had met a boy that wears the face of a grandson he didnt get to attend the funeral of...
*sigh* dont you just love it when a guy builts a thing to actually find another guy but it ended up leading to you and any other version of you, and is now stuck like that for the rest of your multidimensional life because they created a boundary that specifically traps you into being his?
And now, every other him and every other you has no choice but to meet each other and the portal gun is basically a freeway on inevitability meeting one other?
Dont you just love it when your abuser literally traps you in this invisible wall and you are now forced to play to become his enabler and be abused by him in thousands ways in infinite possibilities? And you cant escape him nor death cause he holds the fate of your ending, and no matter how much he hurts you, you will inevitability seek comfort of the very same hands that abused you...and you accept that, cause you see it too...that he belongs to you more than anyone else in the universe
*sigh* I love the central finite curve...its just, you cant fight it, it already trapped you the day you where born, it is written in the stars, you and him are meant to be forever! giving the rick and morty tumblr fandom a link to a thread i've made on the canon abuse depicted in r&m, from rick towards morty.
for anyone unaware of why i might've made of this and why im putting it in the main rick and morty tag: the finale was really, really good and while im unsure how tumblr is reacting to it, there's been a fandom-wide discussion about abuse experiences over on twitter due to this episode. many people have been opening up about their abuse and how this show makes them feel seen.
prior to the finale, many people who didn't ship these two were refusing to use the words "emotional incest" or "sexual abuse" in the context of rick and morty because they didn't want to be mistaken for shippers. in fact, i complained about this very shortly prior to the finale airing and i had the fascinating experience of someone in anti circles make an entire account just to reply to my post and admit that's why they can't talk about their own abuse with their friends.
and of course, a few bad apples saw an entire fandom talking about emotional incest in the context of this episode and told us: "its up for interpretation." and "you guys are just being gross"
so here it is. a post season finale thread about rick and morty where i point out very specific scenes that would legally get Rick in trouble with courts if he were real. complete with laws! and abuse definitions according to both my government and a child abuse source book.

they are both prone to selfharm in their own sophisticated and nasty ways, both are doing it to each other and it's like they had the thoughts but never acted on them before
