I did a redraw of this dumb A Series of Unfortunate Events reference that I originally drew back 2019(five years ago?!). It’s based on a scene between Dick and Wintergreen in Bad Company.

Just a couple of conmen who should have stayed far, far away from Collinsport and vampires. Based on the Norman Rockwell paintings ‘Boys Smoking’ and ‘Retribution’:

Loved the part when Willie unlocked the GoodEndingTM and moved in with the Evans clan and everyone lived happily ever after.

“Then you’d do well to get them.”

A redemption story.

“Do you really think you can stop him?”  “I don't know. But I can try. I can try.”    “You can let me escape!” “You know I can't. He'd come after me, he'd kill me--or worse.” “You can escape with me! Willie... Willie don't let me die.”    “He's going to kill Maggie Evans tonight. [...] And all I can do is stand by and watch as long as I live. I'll live with death, people dyin' --and worse. I can't let it go on--I gotta do something!”

“Oh sure, you’re ‘Sorry’. That’s a new word you learned only recently. I’d like to know where you learned to say it.”

Dark Shadows was really clever to juxtapose metaphorical and literal vampire arcs, and it set Willie up for one of the most devastating redemption arcs I’ve ever seen.

You already believed in vampires, the strong and the clever whose natural right it was to snare the weak and bleed them dry. You didn't notice the tremors as you crossed the outer threads of the web (don't touch me) to learn too late who, in the end, was the spider, and who the fly. (don't touch me) You're part of this story too, now.                 (I s--I said I'm sorry...                    I said I was sorry...)

“Are you squeamish about death?” “He was my friend!” “Your friend? You told me he tried to kill you.” “But a long time ago before we came here, we were friends. Good friends.” “You really are appallingly sentimental.”

In ep 264 Barnabas and Willie believe Maggie to be dead, and only the vampire’s literal slave holds himself accountable. Go figure.

(Watch out, Barnabas, doesn’t sound like Willie is about to stand back and let you kill Maggie twice.)

I’ve discovered that the 1966 Dark Shadows soap (specifically Willie Loomis) makes a good subject for oil subtraction paintings.

Behold: Cass, Jason, and a reference to a quote from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

(Explanation: Cass’s book references the quote “I incline to Cain’s heresy. I let my brother go to the devil in his own way,” but since she’s the personification of “that sign won’t stop me because I can’t read!” I don’t think the book made much of an impression.)
