I’ve been asked many times what someone should look for when trying to find a good artist. The best way you can do this is to look at their portfolio, whether it’s in a book at their shop or online. If they don’t have good work in their portfolio, they’re probably not good artists.
The shop may be clean, the people there might be nice, and the design they draw up for you might be exactly what you want, but if your artist doesn’t stand up to the points listed above, then you’re going to get a bad tattoo.
It’s okay to walk into a shop, talk with an artist for a while, and decide you don’t want a tattoo from them. Even if the artist has a bad attitude about it or tries to convince you to just let them do it, remember this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life.
This is fucking fantastic thank you!!
also a good tattoo artist will be able to work on dark skin mama

I've seen this before, but it's been years and it just came across my Twitter in its dying days. The words are from a favorite author of mine, Maggie Stiefvater, and they are the words I most need to hear when it comes to dealing with chronic pain and illness. I didn't need this the first time I saw it, six years ago. I need it now. Maybe you do, too.

hmmm
A new religious statue in the town of Davidson, N.C., is unlike anything you might see in church.
The statue depicts Jesus as a vagrant sleeping on a park bench. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church installed the homeless Jesus statue on its property in the middle of an upscale neighborhood filled with well-kept townhomes.
Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away.
The reaction was immediate. Some loved it; some didn’t.
“One woman from the neighborhood actually called police the first time she drove by,” says David Boraks, editor of DavidsonNews.net. “She thought it was an actual homeless person.”
That’s right. Somebody called the cops on Jesus.
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Since you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.
that quote should be added as a plaque on this. This is seriously one of the MOST powerful pieces of art I’ve ever seen. Bravo.

‘Iapetus: The Monolith Waits’ (2016) by Steve Dodd. A brand new painting from Steve Dodd, his first new space/scifi painting in nearly 30 years. It is based on Arthur C Clarke’s book of 2001 rather than the movie. Steve Dodd is a US artist who was at his most prolific in the 1980s with works featured in Starlog, Omni and Future Life magazines along with European book covers, art exhibitions with the Hildebrandt brothers and a commendation from Arthur C Clarke. For various reasons Steve stepped back from the rough and tumble of the scifi art scene which was hyper-competitive and he eventually stopped painting. Over the last few years he has shared some of his work with me, most never seen outside his studio. With this spectacular painting Steve is most definitely back in business!

tw: mention of violence, manipulation (depends on how you view it) and ed. scroll past this if it might upset you
“you wanna tell me where you got those bruises from?”
“roll up your sleeve, you know I don’t like repeating myself.”
“I know you’re bleeding. I can smell your blood, and you’re pale. now you wanna tell me what happened and who hurt you? or do I have to find it out myself?”
“who did this to you?”
“I know you and I know it when you lie to me, and you know how I feel about being lied to.”
“no one is going to love and accept you like I do. don’t you understand that?”
“I’m not angry at you. I’m angry at the scum that thought he could do this to you, and I will make him pay for it.”
“stop squirming and it will hurt less.”
“I’m sorry for yelling. I supposed I got so angry that I lost it, but I wasn’t angry at you. I was angry at that sick fuck, and at myself for not seeing the signs sooner.”
“is that really what you think of me? you think I would — you think I would hurt you?”
“you don’t have to be afraid of me.”
“no, I won’t allow you to put yourself in danger like that again. and if I have to tie you up or chain you down to this very bed to make sure you stay put, I will.”
“you can hate me all you want, but I’m not letting you hurt yourself anymore.”
“eat. this is not a question, you have to eat something and I’m hoping that you won’t make me force you.”
“quit your crying, it’s not going to help.”
“it’s okay, you can cry.”
“I am saving you whether or not you want to be saved.”
“you’re a stubborn brat, but you’re my stubborn brat. I will not let anybody touch what is mine.”
“I told you to listen to me. you should’ve listened to me.”
“I don’t want you to apologize to me, I want you to stop doing this to yourself.”
“let me see [the wound]. I said let me see.”
“there’s a reason people are afraid of me. I am capable of the most brutal acts of violence, yes, but I want you to know that you don’t have to be afraid of me. I’m not gonna hurt you the way I hurt everybody else. you… I’m not gonna hurt you. you don’t have to trust me, but I won’t hurt you.”
“this is your home now. it’ll be easier if you accept that.”
“everything I do, I do it for your own good.”
“you don’t realize how much you mean to me, do you?”
“I know it hurts, but I need you to be brave for me right now.”
“stop it. stop fighting against me. I am helping you.”
“I’d burn the world down for you.”
“look what you made me do. none of this would’ve happened if you just listened to me.”
“I saved you. all these deaths? it’s worth it. I would do anything and everything to keep you safe.”
