he considers turning the damn thing off entirely as the phone vibrates and the screen lights up the darkened room yet again. ( he’d never do something as foolish as that. even now it sits on a charger, waiting for the phone call that he half yearns for, half dreads. ) for a long moment, bronco does not move. continues lying on too coarse, too ugly sheets of the shit motel he’d checked himself into, staring up at nothing. it’s not like it’s the first time he has ever lost someone. he and his teams know the risks of this line of work intimately. more than sid’s guys usually do. something ugly rears its head at that thought. fingers seize the phone charger, yanking it free of the phone, tossing it away without looking. he’s nearly blinded as the phone vibrates again, screen brightening suddenly with the repeat notification.

idly bronco taps at the other stacked notifications. too many messages from moreno. he doesn’t read them, only acknowledges how long it takes him to scroll through them. a small handful from sid’s guy, gucci. two from rachel almost two weeks ago. a thank you and a reminder to rest, and an order to start looking for dunne and baker’s replacements. bronco returns, as he always does, to the text from sidney. the only text from sid. space given without bronco having to ask. sid is good at that. to get a message from his husband now… he's has been radio silent, been still for too long.

it was never easy to lose a team member. they made themselves out to be a family. and it felt like they were. - didn't matter how fast bronco and sid could replace someone, they were still human. and it meant it still hurt. so when bronco had gone off on his own to mourn, to be alone because he needed it, sid had understood and let him go. it was easier to let some of broncos moods go without being commented on and sid knew exactly which ones bronco needed to process on his own.

but being alone wasn't smart forever. especially when grieving. especially when they still had jobs to do and rachel would surely call some point or another with another job that she needed her boys on.

so he'd fired off that text, knowing bronco would answer it. ( and if he didn't answer, it meant that sid was supposed to go get him. )

But being practically kidnapped by the government hadn’t left him with many options at the time. “I’m working with the Petrava task force, and I guess I just wanted to drop by while I could. I’ll be busy for a while, and you might not be able to reach me.”

He looked up at Luke from over his glasses. He wasn’t sure what his brother would think about him working for every government on earth. The task force itself was public knowledge, even if the project and what they were actually doing were classified.

the fridge is closed again and luke walks over and plops down on a chair across from his brother. blue eyes looking into blue eyes as he waits for an answer. "the petrova task force?" the look in his eyes asks if they really asked him on, after the whole waste of carbon debacle at a conference years ago. ( personally, luke thought that shit was hilarious. and he loved that ryland had enough of a tempter to take care of himself when the chips were down. )

working for the government - for all the governments - was a scary notion. luke didn't believe for a second that ryland was safe in an environment like that. because govenrments were rarely for the people, in luke's opinion. for a moment, he's quiet. clearly choosing his words. "you safe?" because if his brother wasn't, luke would simply kidnap him from the governments of the world until they all either died or shit rolled over and no one cared anymore.

a moment's pause. "this breakup really fucked you up if you're trying to end our life-long feud," he's joking when he says it, doesn't mind not being bitched at for once. the details of his sex life aren't something he would want to talk about with hughie anyway. some things aren't for the ears of one's sibling. there was a lot that emerson kept to himself, solely because it wasn't for hughie's ears. "i made lemon blueberry cinnamon rolls earlier," he offers, fishing his phone out of his pocket. it takes him only a moment but then he hands hughie the phone, letting him look through an album on his camera roll. "you know what will heal your heart? stuffing your face with ice cream and homemade pastries. lets go. i'll even let you pick a movie and i won't complain," he offers.
