As early as 1900 I can show you black folks who owned land, businesses and other investments here in America. Unfortunately, many of those who owned them sold them away to white folks. They sold them for a lopsided amount of money and often they died broke while the investments they once owned grew in value. The lure of paper money that we can touch is often more powerful than watching it grow in investments and passing it on to our children. It breaks my heart to see this happening even in 2017. Gentrification is sweeping across the nation and over taking the neighborhoods where our people have historically lived. Harlem once known as a black mecca is now mostly white. They will look at you strange if they see you walking down the street there nowadays, imagine that. Some of us actually get mad at the fact that the crime ridden Cabrini Green projects were torn down and of course white folks were moved in and luxury homes now stand. The thing which we are not considering is this, when our neighborhood is no longer black, then where will you go? Believe it or not that has been in the works for decades people. Gentrification is financially blocking us from living in certain areas and those areas are expanding. One of the many tragedies in that fact is, the few of us who do own our homes are selling them for money we don’t know how to cultivate and within 10 years are broke again. Those of us who are lifetime renters are at the mercy of landlords and area property values which too will be rising sooner than later. The elephant in the room here is the most annoying part of all and that is, we are not a broke people. We are a people who spend $1.2,000,000,000,0000 ( One point trillion) in Americas economy a year. Together we are richer than many countries around the world. So, where is the money? While we are getting poorer the companies we support are getting richer. We are being pushed out of our neighborhood but Nike is getting richer. The weave business is getting richer. Benson & Hedges who makes Newports cigarettes is getting richer. The Korean community in America practices group economics and thanks to you, they are getting richer. We are playing a part in our own demise and together we can halt this death march into their hands. Of course some of us wont mind living in hell as long as we look good. I just don’t think that way anymore.
