Scorpions - In Trance
Finisterre
by Der Weg einer Freiheit
I confess I do not know much about Der Weg einer Freiheit. I may have listened to a track or two on a Spotify Daily Mix but they’ve never really stood out to me. However, I began hearing some early buzz on their latest album, Finisterre, and still less than a month after release the reviews are mostly positive.
Upon listening to Finisterre I find myself more than pleasantly surprised. While I can’t speak for earlier releases from this band this particular album is a great mix of black, post-black and atmospheric black metal.
Mind you, Der Weg einer Freiheit doesn’t exactly re-invent the black metal wheel. However, every track on the album is solid. Some (Aufbruch and Skepsis, pt.II come to mind) are even pretty spectacular.
I’m adding this album to my short list for best black metal album of 2017. And if you like music that straddles the fence between modern Enslaved and Deathspell Omega I highly recommend you check Finisterre out for yourself.

My theme song.
Having heard both Lore and Dead Roots Stirring I must say that I have appreciated this band but have never really considered myself a fan. My opinion may be changing upon hearing the Boston power trio’s latest, Reflections of a Floating World.
With their previous albums I really had a hard time distinguishing them from all the other Sleep clones currently floating around the sonicsphere. However, Reflections seems to add just enough of a Rush vibe to pull them away from the pack.
On top of that I’m a sucker for a good jam band, and Elder packs extended prog jams aplenty in this album.
So, upon reflection (heh); Sleep-esque riffs, check; Rush-esque progressive rock jams, check; Sludgey interludes à la Mastodon, check. Conclusion, definitely worth recommending to any fans of real rock.
