"So what does all this mean for marketing? In my opinion, it means that SEO isn’t dead but it’s starting to look more like traditional marketing where having a fuller picture of searcher personae is key. There’s also a need for greater focus on the technologist side of things with semantic markup becoming so important in SEO. I predict that you’ll see many SEO departments integrating with social teams and more SEOs being pulled from the content, social media and development worlds for their capabilities in those respective spaces. It’s clear to me that the future of SEO and social are intertwined, and leveraging best practices from both disciplines is the way to success."
Last Wednesday I attended the first Glass Explorer Social at Project Glass headquarters at Chelsea Market. Here’s my recap (music video included).
"Marketers wondering how their optimization efforts will pay off need only look at the small chunks of hyper-relevant targeted information, which emphasizes a movement toward semantic data. The data comes from Google's Knowledge Graph and semantic markup, Reva McEachern, global SEO supervisor at Resolution Media, explains."

Want to know what it’s like to browse the Web with Google Glass? It may not be what you think. Although Glass provided a dialogue with instructions “tap and hold with two fingers,” I found the zoom and click navigation less than intuitive. You have to tap the side panel on Glass with two fingers then move your head around to view different parts of the page. For an example of what this looks like, imagine looking at wall mural. If you’re standing close to one, to see all of it you would have to turn your head up, down, left right. It’s the same thing with Glass. Swiping two fingers forward and back (or left and right) zooms out and in respectively. To me, swiping back/left to zoom in feels backwards.

Just a few more days until I pick up my Google Glass. I can’t wait to explore New York City! If anyone has ideas for interesting events or experiences that I can showcase as a Project Glass Explorer contact me on Twitter @revamc.
Facebook just announced a new video feature in Instagram. Similar to Vine, it allows users to add short video clips to their feed, and also apply a variety of filters. (I believe up to 30 seconds of video and 12 filters, but will update later if the details are different). It's obviously a direct swipe at Vine, and I can't be made at them. I'm actually totally into this idea as I've recently become quite the Instagrammer. Since joining Instagramm I spend less time on Facebook, but I guess technically it's all the same now.
I've noticed people posting "join me on Vine" photos everywhere and I just love that this Instagram update has the potential to dead that in its tracks. I mean, we really don't need another social networking site.
Google Now comes to iOS - What now for SEOs?
I was reading Metro today and saw an article titled “Google Now comes to iPhone, challenging Apple Inc’s Siri” and thought it was worth sharing. Here’s the original publication in Reuters http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/04/29/google-iphone-apple-siri-idINDEE93S0AC20130429 Why is this important to SEOs? Predictive search technology is intended to speed up the content discovery process, eliminating the need to browse through multiple results. With Google Now being available to a wider audience of smartphone & tablet users, the number of people using the Google Search App to discover content on their mobile device will rise. This puts even more importance on being the most relevant result in a mobile context. From Brafton.com “Google looks to gain some mobile search ground by bolstering its Google Search App for iOS devices… The hope would be to drive Google Search App downloads upward, as it has yet to break into the top 10 downloads in iTunes…Google Now is the search engine’s predictive search assistant…When a user begins entering a query in a search box, Google Now tries to anticipate answers to speed up the digital content discovery process. For example, asking for travel times will generate a list of flights, train departures etc.” Takeaways… 1. It's important to have a deep understanding of what relevancy means to Google today, and that's going beyond technical/page level optimizations used to influence the link graph to incorporate SEO strategies aimed at exploiting the social and knowledge graphs. 2. As Google continues to put greater focus on mobile, creating mobile content will become a major priority for SEOs in the near future.
The evolution of memory. From Wired Magazine’s 20th Anniversary Edition, May 2013. Pretty sick drop huh? Couple years, memory will be free and running through our veins!
First Beyonce didn’t sing the national anthem at the Inauguration. Then she sang it at a Superbowl press conference. Though some say neither version compares to Whitney’s classic rendition, I give the edge to Maya Rudolph for combing the best and worst diva performances of all time into a single, hilarious 3 minute parody. Enjoy!
I love this post from Blind Five Year Old that breaks down Google's "evil" (or not so evil) plan. Clearly Google is a powerful company. At times, it may even seem omnipresent. And when a company gets that big villainous characterization is almost unavoidable.
When we look at Google's latest initiatives it does appear that the company has its hands in every digital pot imaginable. But as the writer, AJ Kohn, does a great job of explaining, Google's not so evil plan is simply to get people using the Internet more.
"The more time people spend on the Internet the more time they’ll engage in revenue generating activities such as viewing and clicking display ads and performing searches.
The way Google executes on this strategy is to improve speed and accessibility to the Internet. Google wants to shorten the distance between any activity and the Internet."
So simple it's genius.
Facebook Graph Search
Facebook just announced Graph Search. Here are my initial thoughts.
There are a few things you can search...
people
photos
places
pages for businesses
And searches are going to be along the lines of...
People who like bikes in Brooklyn
Photos of dogs my friends like
Restaurants my friends like
Cities my friends have visited
So, with this tool, they elevate the "like" and "checkin" from just voting and location mechanisms to search operators/filters. Therefore, getting likes and checkins becomes even more important for brands. There’s a mobile slant here too because most people checkin from a mobile device (though you can post a location from the desktop site). To that end, marketers may need to think about ways of increasing in-store engagement to increase checkins.
One thing SEOs can do is promote the use of open graph protocols for greater control over content that is shared to Facebook from client’s sites. Another thing may be to prioritize implementing highly visible Facebook buttons instead of those third-party sharing widgets (e.g. sharethis) which some consider old hat with Like, Tweet, Pin “verbing the web.”
SEOs have been paying attention to Google and how social makes its way into search results and may even be a factor in relevancy and/or freshness. With this move, Facebook could take the short term lead. But, social search is in its nascent stages (Google's limited by Google+ adoption and limited access to Facebook data, and Facebook search is nowhere near as sophisticated as Google) so it's too early to declare either company a winner.
Guns are offensive not defensive weapons. Yet the NRA has people fooled into thinking that a gun can actually save them in a crisis. Here's an video proving it mostly likely cannot.
