this has been a character that has been sitting in my brain largely ignore since about 2006, 2007. i’m still figuring out all the pieces, but he’s an old new oc, if that makes sense.

the copperstone family is a town institution. as far as everyone’s concerned, they were here when it was found, & it seems they’ll be here long after it’s a ghost town, too.
julius copperstone married madelyn palmer in the spring, & his father died eight weeks later --- the day after they announced madelyn was pregnant. the people said old ulysses copperstone had just been waiting to see the family lineage continue before he crossed over, & just under nine months later, when a baby boy soon to be named lysander was born, it seemed to be that they were right.
no one ever really knew just how right, however.
the copperstones - for all their charitable benevolence & good-naturedness - are a secretive family. outsiders are vetted during a long process before they are able to marry into the family, & offspring are kept to two at a maximum to lessen the chance of someone rebelling. two means that even if you have one child that needs to undergo The Night, you still have another . . . to continue the copperstone line.
lysander grew up a town favorite - the golden boy, in fact. like his father before him, & his father’s father before him, & his father’s father’s mother before him. THE COPPERSTONES ARE A LIKEABLE PEOPLE. they have been for as long as anyone can remember.
( it was sometime in the seventeenth century. a desperate plea for salvation, a deal with the devil ------ endless prosperity, for a small sacrifice every few generations ).
after all, it’s an honor to give yourself to him.
when lysander disappeared, his parents didn’t report him to the police. not until the second week, at least, after his girlfriend started to kick up a fuss. they put on a very good act. posters up, madelyn’s hours spent practicing crying on command coming into fruition during those tv interview close ups. PLEASE, WE JUST WANT OUR BOY BACK.
& all the while, he was buried in the copperstone yard, fertilizing madelyn’s prize-winning roses.
he was never supposed to come back. no one had ever come back before.
footsteps sometime near three in the morning. soil tracked upstairs. flakes of dried blood on the bathroom tiles. streaks of it in the sink. lysander was found in his own bed, hair still damp from being freshly washed, smelling of roses.
at first, no one noticed anything much different. then, they chalked little things up to his amnesia, to ptsd, maybe. how he never seemed wholly satisfied with anything. how he wanted & wanted & wanted, but it wasn’t enough. it was like there was a hole in him ; a bottomless pit nothing can satiate.
after a while, you get used to the hunger. it never goes away, but you can get used to it. most of the time --- until it becomes unbearable, & you need to eat, now.
it seems that’s common with people who have come back from the dead. the insatiable hunger they can’t quite put a finger on.
lysander worked it out, though. with help from the family’s newest gardener last week. too bad he didn’t show up for his shift yesterday . . .

verses ( rough )
18 - senior year of school. this is when lysander is murdered as part of ‘ the night ’, a sacrificial satanic ritual every few generations in order to keep their prosperity going. he comes back two weeks later, but something isn’t right.
~25 - lysander is prepping to take over from julius as head of the business ( i’m still toying with exactly what that is sry ), & is still yk. sometimes killing ppl & whatnot. he starts doing something that hasn’t been done before in his family --- he starts actively recruiting fresh blood
~35+ - julius dies, lysander takes his place as copperstone patriarch, & slowly starts to open up the town to who he is, what he is. he is chosen by the devil themself. as a replacement. & all those who follow will be rewarded, both in life & in death. open yourself to him, & you will see.
