Day 7 - Alisaie Leveilleur, resident Red Mage and self-proclaimed doer of reckless things ♥️✨
a reader once literally said in a comment 'i don't know if i feel morally correct reading this haha' and they didn't mean it in a bad way, it just made me so sad for the state of society.
fiction isn't about feeling morally correct or incorrect. it's not about reading for virtue points, nor is it about reading to become more 'evil.' this isn't what fiction does. what you read in fiction says nothing about your moral character (and before anyone in the tags says 'this doesn't include people who read underage, yes it does.) what you read in fiction says nothing about how good you are or how bad you are in reality.
someone feeling nervous enjoying a fic because it might not be 'morally correct' is one of the saddest things i've seen in a long time.
it wasn't their fault either, this is what they've been taught by their peers who obviously veer anti.
the best thing to do on AO3 is just take the morals out of it. morals and ethics are who you are to other people in reality, it's not really about the fiction you enjoy. that doesn't mean the fiction we enjoy shouldn't be explored, discussed or talked about, but it does mean your ethical standing and your moral character can't be determined by how much you enjoy reading dubcon / noncon / etc.
it just can't.

how it feels to be online these days
friendships end. relationships end. fictional man whos doing even worse than you is forever
can you imagine you go to a fancy italian restaurant and before you go through the doors the doorman stops you and is like Signore Per Fevore, I Simply Must Remove Your Jacket Before You Enter and youre like well if you must, its getting a little shabby anyways and he says It Is My Pleasure Signore and then he smashes you over the head and cuts you up into little pieces for your flavour and aroma. such is the life of the humble garlic
I still think about this daily

let the contemporary record show mr beast was pretty ignorable for his whole career if you were just like, busy.
i've had so many conversations with people in fandom/creators' circles who are genuinely afraid to make the stories or art they want because they fear (often with good reason!) that their friends might kick them out of their circles, or worse, launch a public harassment campaign against them.
as someone recovering from this fear-based mindset, i want to affirm:
- friends who use implicit or explicit threats to maintain social control are not your friends
- communities that monitor your social media and ao3 to surveil you for perceived transgressive content are not safe communities
- the vast majority of people are NOT going to hate you if you make the art you want
- if you find yourself in a friend group that makes you feel afraid to speak your mind, it's in your interest to disentangle yourself from that group as quickly as possible
- real, honest disagreements between friends can be solved respectfully without the use of public shaming
- if you're feeling afraid in a community, it's likely that others are feeling afraid too. support your friends who may be struggling to leave an abusive fan or creative community, and let them know you're a safe person to voice doubts and disagreement to.
- if you're feeling like you'll never find a safer community of people, i promise there are others who feel that way too. it may take some time, but you'll find people who treat you and your ideas with respect. a good place to start is the people who make the type of art that you admire but that you're too afraid to make yourself.
ok that's all, take care of each other and be nice 💜
