reflecting upon Ā what it was that had led them to this moment, this
rather Ā beautiful Ā impasse, Michael pondered what it WAS about him that
had kept Avery coming back for more, even when he was at his very Ā worst.
it was not in his nature to be a CRUEL man and yet this relationship had
knocked him for six. he hadnāt felt this way since Giselle passed, hadnāt
allowed it. foolishly, he had believed that he Ā understood Ā his sexuality.
that this little affair was nothing more than a passing FIXATION that
would be over soon enough. and yet the more he saw Avery, the harder
it was becoming to form a picture of his life without him. it was infuriating.
ā oh, I like the classics, yāknow? actually really miss this one we got back
home, called lilt. tastes likeā¦I dunno. Ā grapefruit Ā I guess? just this really
sweet tropical pop andā¦christ, I remember being SO PISSED after I came
here and found out that America didnāt have itā¦havenāt thought about that
inā¦so long. ā shaking himself from the memories of the past, he cleared
his throat, already moving to do the drying up on INSTINCT.
it was unusual indeed that he allowed any vulnerability Ā to show. his life
before he came to America was such a DISTANT memory now. one that
he tried to put behind him, though there were days, months even, when he
longed to Ā escape Ā back to Ireland with Lucy. give her a fresh start back
there, so far away from all of this.
the soft PRESS of Averyās cheek to his bicep caused him to glance
down, a small smile, a Ā true smile, upon his lips. ā yāknow, Iām real
GLAD you came tāme, ā he confessed, leaning back against the
counter and fixing Avery with a look ā youā¦are Ā far from what I
was expectinā butā¦I guess life is NEVER quite what we want it
tābe. ā chewing the inside of his cheek for a moment, he sighed
ā mānot sure Ā knowinā Ā me is a wise idea for you though, Av. Iāmā¦
Iām not a GOOD MAN. not really. if I was, I woulda walked away
from the club when Lucy was born. I woulda been there when her
mama⦠ā wincing, he scrubbed a hand down his face, clearing his
throat ā cāmon. Iāll show you tāyour room, where the shower is and all
that jazz. getcha all SETTLED for the eveninā. ā
a Ā darkness Ā had poisoned the happy moment that they had been
enjoying, thoughts of Giselle pushing their way back into the very
FOREFRONT of his mind. how could he have thisā¦person, how
even to DESCRIBE what they shared at this point was a mystery
he could not quite muddle through, in her houseā¦he had to be
out of his mind. pausing when they reached the stairs, he turned
to Avery with a frown ā Iām not gonna say this twice butā¦yāmake
me Ā happy. anā thatās more than I DESERVE, Av. ā
