Send “📂“ for a random yet completely useless headcanon I have
governcss:
it is impossible to express just how his every word STINGS. they fall like acid rain upon her bare skin ;; on the terse clasp of her hands in her lap, the tight set of her jaw. these superficial recollections of HER FAMILY – from this stranger whose father kept them prisoners – are as unwelcome as a knife to the gut.
at last, the former grand duchess can no longer take it. when he opens his mouth for another comment, she snaps. “ for god’s sake, will you SHUT UP? ”
a young girl raised as a princess, reserved and shy, always mindful of her words… the tatiana nikolaevna who stood by her family’s side would never be so sharp. that girl has been DEAD for a long time, however. the last ember of her was extinguished in a cellar a decade ago, alongside her parents and siblings. even if tatiana was not there ( sent away for her own protection, her parents swore, before they knew what true danger WAS ) she lost herself along with them.
so she thought. by some miracle, her youngest sister has returned to her… and this man, this deputy vaganov, was sent to FOLLOW her. tatiana does not understand why he is here now — to concoct some cover story, when it is plain he’d just as quickly see her sister, her grandmother, and herself — the last remaining romanovs – DEAD.
“ i do not CARE what you remember of my family, ” she hisses. “ you did not know them. you have no right to speak their names. ”
her outburst shocked him silent, and for a moment, he just stared, mouth agape, as he tried to process what just happened.
his first instinct was to SHOUT, to scream about what he was told he truly thought of the romanovs and their crimes until tatiana felt as guilty as he did for surviving it all. he wanted to shove her into the wall and intimidate her into seeing things his way, or at least into leaving. it wasn’t FAIR, he thought, that after everything the revolution had worked for — after everything he’d worked for — half of the romanovs were still alive, living just as opulently in france as they had in russia. the people deserved better than this halfway executed coup.
but he was exhausted, and he didn’t have the energy left to shout, so he simply nodded and adjusted his posture to sit up straight in his chair.
he so badly didn’t want to follow her orders, but his head hurt, and he didn’t want to be in france any longer than he had to.
“would you rather me talk about them as I knew them later? I saw it all from my bedroom window. I could describe that, if that’s what you’d rather talk about.“
it was bitter and petty, but with the tears from his encounter with anya still on his face and the ghosts from his earlier episode still in the corners of his vision, he couldn’t gather the will to feel anything much stronger.
“I’m here to fix things. don’t change my mind.“
Who would win in a fight between Gleb and Javert (the battle of the lawful/neutral antagonists whose moral outlook was turned around by the person they were chasing)
in a physical fight? gleb. throughout les mis, we see javert repeatedly taken down by not only valjean, but also the revolutionary boys. in fact, we follow the man’s story for 20 years, and he loses every fight we see him in. my confidence in javert’s physical strength is slim at best. also, let’s consider ramin’s physique — he’s beaten javert in physical altercations as both enjolras and jean valjean. and, in conclusion, assuming we’re going for a mid-canon situation, javert is 52; he’s got some years on gleb.
morally? probably javert. while he doesn’t really do anything particularly good, he doesn’t really do anything particularly evil either. like, gleb is a high-ranking officer in an organization that actively tortures people. early 19th century france was lousy, but the bolsheviks were up to some really sketchy stuff. and, like, javert was at least chasing valjean down to get him to serve prison time for a crime he genuinely committed? gleb was seriously considering straight-up killing anya based on things her ancestors did, so it gets a little more hazy there. I mean, gleb does try to help the situation after he figures out how messy it is, which javert doesn’t really do, but still.
overall? tbh javert is the first character I ever rp-ed as, but I really like how much depth they wrote into gleb. in general, I love the inspector dearly, but I find gleb more interesting to write, personally.
Be honest: if you didn’t love Anya, would you have killed her?
anon casts zone of truth!
“I would like to think I would have. but, then again, I thought I would be able to do it before, despite my… feelings.“ he wrinkles his nose and pauses, trying to find the right words. “in the end, I don’t think it was even love that stopped me. my father — “ he takes a deep breath and exhales slowly. “I could hardly see her through the ghosts. my hands — they were shaking so badly, I wouldn’t have been able to make a clean shot, even if I had fired.
“so, to answer: I WISH I could give a more definitive yes. but it seems that I really am my father’s son, and so she lives.“
Send "be honest" followed by a question and my muse will be forced to answer with 100% honesty

“I was scared of pretty girls and starting conversations.“
it was strange and awkward, reminiscing on the childhood he’d temporarily shared with tatiana’s siblings. it wasn’t that he regretted their deaths - - he didn’t. even after everything, he still believed that the romanovs got what they deserved. perhaps, if pressed, he would have admitted to being a bit squeamish about the deaths of the youngest children, but he had no intention of thinking hard enough about the situation to doubt what he’d always been told was a righteous execution.
as much as he hated small talk, it was preferable to acknowledging the rather bloodied elephant in the room.
so he filled awkward gaps in the conversation with random bits of anecdotes from when he was fifteen and living with his parents in the barracks while his father guarded the romanovs. the wait for an audience with the dowager empress was painful, but necessary, if he was going to get a story together to take back to his superior officers about what happened to anya.
What's gonna happen, Gleb? When people find out you let the princess go.
“I don’t intend for them to find out.“
as far as he knew, he had covered his trail perfectly. after some awkward meetings and phone calls, he and the dowager empress had decided on a story that would cover and benefit both of their agendas. as far as anybody on either side knew, anastasia ( and the supposed imposter anya ) were both dead by gleb’s hand. he had turned in his reports, received his medal and promotion, and made his announcement. everything matched; everyone moved on.
as far as he knew, the case of the missing grand duchess was closed, and nobody should ever have any reason to reopen it.

guess who’s back? (like for a lyric starter)

@revolutionsimpled· plotted for:
She had believed at the time that he was playing a trick on her. That he had been pretending to let her go free, only to get up and shoot her in the back the moment that she would turn around. What would he have gained by allowing her to live? When he had chased her all the way to France, with the clear orders and intent to kill her, what could possibly compel him to allow Anastasia to walk away? Gleb hated the Romanovs and she was the last of them. She had seen the hatred for her family - for her - and what they represented in his eyes when he had grabbed her chin that day in his office and forced her to look into them. She had also seen it the last time he had confronted her in Paris, as he had aimed his gun at her head and claimed that he WAS in fact his father’s son.
Anya had accepted death in those moments between hatred and fear ― when she had been so certain that he would pull the trigger as he had been told ― and had merely spoken a silent prayer as prepared to be reunited with her family. Thoughts of seeing little Alexei’s face once more had still been in her mind when he had, by some miracle, dropped to his knees and had whispered, “I can’t” instead. She had still been disbelieving ( uncertain that this wasn’t just yet another manipulation on his part ) as she carefully approached him. Yet, a small part of her had also been grateful and as she watched the son of that dreadful man sob, pity for him overwhelming her. She had forgiven him then and foolishly believed that they were both free from the bloody legacy his father had helped create, but even then the idea of him coming back had haunted her. The thought that she may yet still see him in some place other than her nightmares. Now, as he stands across from her on her grandfather’s bridge, she is certain that he has returned to finish the job he had originally been assigned.
❛ Gleb. ❜ Her voice does not waver the way it had the last time he had confronted her. If there was one thing that she had learned in the months following Anastasia’s second death in the eyes of the public, it was that Anya had no desire to die just yet. She would not accept death as easily this time.
after leaving anya in the ballroom, he’d gone to confront lily, and they’d sorted out a story that would suit both of their agendas. there was no anastasia, they’d decided through glares and clenched teeth, she was dead, and the search was over. the dowager empress would stop getting her letters, gleb would end the search in russia, and anya would live her own life with her newfound family. theoretically, everybody won, and no more blood had to be shed, at least for this specific case.
however, following gleb’s announcement, people started to get suspicious. nobody else had seen him kill anastasia, and he refused to talk about it, beyond the required report. the dowager empress didn’t appear to be in mourning, but GLEB did, and people noticed. and when people noticed things, rumors spread. and, of course, there was the whole business with dmitri and the newly-appointed count popov; they had disappeared with anastasia, and now one was missing and the other was married to the empress’s dearest friend, which certainly looked suspicious as well.
when the rumors about what truly happened in paris finally reached the chief of police, gleb decided to flee instead of allowing them to torture him into giving out anya’s true whereabouts. he took the train to paris - - the only place he’d ever been, outside of russia - - and now here he was, still in his uniform, gun at his hip, looking rather frazzled and desperate.
and suddenly, SHE was there too.
“ANYA?“ he couldn’t tell if she was real or just another hallucination, and he wasn’t entirely sure which option he preferred. he took a few steps toward her, hands up to prove he wasn’t holding his weapon. “you’re still here?“
❝Do you understand what it means when you have absolutely nowhere to turn?❞
@anastcsie
“yes.“
and he did. it was an experience he often found himself returning to, and even more so since this whole anastasia business began. before that, he’d never noticed how alone he truly was; he didn’t have any family, and he certainly didn’t have any friends, much less anybody he could talk to about the whole situation. his entire identity was sculpted around being fully dependent on and devoted to the law and the police and the good of russia; if he lost that, or his faith wavered even the slightest bit, he’d fall right over the side into nothing, as his father had.
“but I’ve always come back to this. it’s a PURPOSE, anya, something to live for. it’s all I have and all I need.“
sorry for disappearing, I’m directing a show, and we’ve been in tech for the last two weeks! but I’ll be back soon!
