Lured by future rewards, chastened by punishment, we face the grim necessity of work. This would all be defensible, per-haps, if this work were truly necessary, if it were contributing to the well-being of people and planet. But at least 90 percent of it is not. Part of our revolution is the re-union of work and play, work and art, work and leisure, of have to and want to.

My latest flower circle embroideries. I think I am done with them now and ready to make them into a wall hanging, but I feel a weird reluctance to commit somehow. I’m also considering leaving off some of my least favorite ones from the final version, so I still need to decide on that. But I think I am done making flower circles for now, at least for this particular thing.
They are: Virginia bluebells, Jacob’s ladder, violet, wild geranium lyreleaf sage, rue anemone, redbud Venus’ looking glass, spring beauty, pussywillow hepatica, bloodroot, rue anemone (again), and a weird practice leaf
i love embroidery and plant identification ✨✨

This blog is about trying to connect with nature, but more ultimately trying to connect with myself/my spirit/all things good and beautiful that the world holds. I went to a women’s circle on Monday night and I was asked to give a four-minute long answer to the question, “What would be most nourishing to you right now?” After cycling through my first thought answers of home-grown veggies, being barefoot in the woods, and making eye contact with wild animals, I landed on the answer ‘time’. I’m currently working full time which doesn’t leave very many moments for forest exploration, painting, playing music, or self love and care. Immediately upon discovering this answer, my mind jumped to judgement. Why do I work full time? Why haven’t I found a higher paying job? Why don’t I work for myself yet, like so many people I went to school with? And then it was abundantly clear what would be so much more nourishing than all of that: letting go of the intense and heavy self-judgement I live with every day. I’m always kicking myself for not owning a car so I can camp more, for being too tired when I get home to paint or weave, or for buying greens that come in plastic once in awhile. I am looking to let go of that judgement and pain, because I know that’s the way to more potential and more freedom.

My newest craft interest/obsession(?): Making stuffed animals. Here are two little giraffes I created as Christmas presents this year. It’s hard to see but the fabric is beige, sort of a failed dyeing experiment with pokeberries. I might post a step-by-step stuffie making tutorial soon!
Hello! This here is a v-stitched pine needle basket I completed last December. I gathered these needles in the southern Sierras, near King’s Canyon National Park. It’s my first pine needle basket with handles, so I’m still holding on to it. ;)
