The twins were born 12 weeks early and placed in separate incubators. They weighed about 2 pounds. Brielle had a hard time breathing and gaining weight. A month later, she turned blue and her heart rate skyrocketed. 

The nurse had heard of other countries keeping twins together in intensive care, but it had never been done in the U.S. before. When all else failed, she gave it a try. A newspaper photographer just happened to be in the hospital at that moment. 

The picture became well-known and historic, because it called attention to the healing power of touch and caused a groundbreaking change in the medical community. Today, twins are often placed together in the NICU, even when attached to ventilators.

That was in 1995. The twins are grown now, still closely bonded, and still hugging each other for support.

They’re also very in sync (and adorably embarrassed about it).
