Meeting Reylo peeps tonight was, for me, the highlight of the convention!

I want to spread the love and joy to the Reylo community as a whole. So many wonderful people. And such a privilege to finally meet in person people that have been a blessing to me since I first came onto Tumblr. Thanks so much to our hostess with the mostest @perrydowning for planning such a graceful and fun event. The company and food were awesome, not to mention the nice touch of Kylo and Rey as bride and groom.

It was great meeting new people, and quite powerful to meet my Reylo Thirst Order girls extraordinaire who truly had some cool swag that topped anything inside the convention. Oh the art, the pins, the bracelet… and it « rocked » @obsessivepropulsive !

Regarding new readers hating your Draco: I'm up to date with Manacled but I'm still not really fond of him, obsession with Hermione and momma's boy or not. He's still cruel, possessive, moody, a mass murderer working for Voldemort. He abused Hermione for months. Everyone in that war has shit to deal with but he chooses to take out his personal rage on innocent people. Give your readers with hate for Draco a little break, not everyone is as forgiving as an emotionally starved Hermione.

Draco is a Byronic hero, I think. And hardly a hero at all really. He’s an antihero who has gone out of his way to intentionally accentuate his worst traits. I don’t believe I’ve ever really written him as a hero in Manacled, except maybe to Hermione personally and exclusively.

When I first started writing Manacled I was fairly new to writing and I wanted readers to share Hermione’s perspective, but when everyone overwhelmingly hated Draco and urged me to omit the “eventual romance” tag and just have Hermione kill him, I was worried that I might have made him too utterly irredeemable.

I’m not writing him as the most romantic and ideal partner to marry, I just wanted to make him someone whose choices might be wrong but still had a legitimate motive and reasoning behind, so that people could look at him and say, “you are not a good person, but I can understand why you did what you did, even though it was wrong.”

Obviously this is fanfiction, so many readers are inclined toward forgiving Draco by default. In a lot of cases readers start off hating him and slowly come around to wanting a HEA for Draco and Hermione. But even Hermione sees him as deeply flawed despite being emotionally starved and in love with him. There’s a fair sized handful of readers who still hate him.

I do not understand this Draco hate… why read the story if you’re still hating one of the main characters? Draco has done some bad/questionable things and he’s by no means a “good guy,” but everything he’s done in the present time has been to keep Hermione safe and alive. He’s a victim, too, in all of this.

Imagine being forced to do something awful to someone you love in order to keep them alive. That’s Draco’s predicament here. 

Anyway, this sounds like the people who want Kylo to burn for his crimes instead of find redemption and happiness with Rey. I’m not here for any of that nonsense.

THIS. This ask and the anti-Draco readers in Manacled remind me so much of anti-Ben Solos. May I remind you that: 

People can make enormous mistakes and do bad things and still be worthy of love and forgiveness. 

In Manacled Draco does indeed have a very compelling reason to commit many of the crimes he has– like Ben, he too is a victim. He took the Mark at age 16. He is forced into two nonconsensual relationships– first with Astoria, second with Hermione. Failing to comply with any of these orders would mean death for him and/or his loved ones. 

From our perspective, much of Draco’s behavior is not morally upstanding. But from Draco’s own perspective, he is behaving according to his own moral code. He has killed, for instance, because he thought it was the right thing to do. He has said as much, repeatedly. 

It’s fiction. 

If you despise one of the main characters and the author has clearly said it’s going to be a HEA between him and the protagonist, I wonder why people keep reading?!

Agree with all of this. Prior to falling in love with her, he was in survival mode, adhering to his own moral code (and in the midst of war no less). After his feelings for her solidified, anything seemingly “immoral” he did to her was in service of her protection. He was victimized by the rape, too, as mentioned above — but had he refused, you’d better believe she would have still been raped — just with zero hope of a protector in a position of power.

@raven-maiden has long referred to both Kylo/Ben and Draco as Byronic heroes. In both cases, they are not just troubled because ‘women like assholes.’ These characters are caught between a rock and a hard place, fighting to protect the people they love (parents, mentors, lovers) against nearly insurmountable odds.

Hermione felt the pounding in her ears again. She would see him for the first time since the Great Hall, gaunt and stricken at the Slytherin table with his mother clutching his arm. She hadn’t meant to look for him. Not in the corridors, not beneath the white sheets of the fallen, not on the way to the Chamber of Secrets with Ron, but she was a stupid girl.

I’ve been practically living with this story for the last couple of months and let me tell you, it’s completely awesome. It’s already one of my favorite Dramiones, even though it’s still in progress (it should be finnished in the next month or two) and I recommend it with all my thumbs and limbs up.
