He ALWAYS wanted to go back. He wanted so bad to know he can. Literally the ONE thing holding him was uncertainty if his mom would not reject him. If he were loved unconditionally. No, he couldn’t do it in TFA, even on his father’s say-so. The war his mother was waging, the QUEST FOR LUKE and noone asking his story, his fatalism. The devil in his head. He couldn’t up and go in TLJ. Same reason - the spectre of Luke and the fact that his mother kinda gave up. And then Rey rejected him too. Hello, darkness, my old friend… It’s her promise of love that gave him strength to admit the liberating truths and let go of self-hate. His mother’s passing revealed the futility of his war - it had always been personal, so that momma noticed his worth. Rey’s confession revealed a promise of home. (And then he effin died anyway!)

@toawaterfowl Wow. I never really thought of Ben Solo taking on this role of Supreme Kylo Ren as adopting leadership and getting his mother to pay attention to him. It makes sense. He loves his mother dearly, but felt guilty for so much. For “killing” Luke, for becoming the monster everyone seemed to insinuate he was (and I think Snoke likely egged that on, made more of it than what it was) and was meant to be, for not being the great Jedi he was expected to live up to.

He was the Prince of Alderaan, but he never felt like it. He was named for Obi-wan but did not feel he could possibly measure to someone else’s idea of hope he never met. He was afraid of being a disappointment, and so became what his mother feared–and remember, Leia had never truly forgiven her father despite being the one child that took after her father the most. “Look mother, this is what you feared, and I BECAME it after all”. But he never wanted to do that. He just wanted to be SEEN. Loved for himself, not as a Jedi apprentice or great Hope, or feared as his grandfather, just seen and loved unconditionally. To be enough.

I think Han Solo truly loved his son as he was–but he was away from Ben a lot, which only made Ben want to clutch to him faster. Rey loves Ben for who he is. Ben feared his mother did not, nor his uncle. 

I don’t even know for sure, but at times I wonder if Ben even truly wanted to be a Jedi at all. I think he is more like his father, someone who would rather eschew the limelight and devote himself to a few people in his life. Han never liked being a General or having titles. He just wanted to be good at what he did and be known for being a proficient smuggler, but only that modest amount of fame he could handle.
