“Do you need a hand with that?” He asks from over her shoulder, watching where her feet poke out from beneath the console. She’s always finding something to repair.
@reyoflightsbr liked for Ben Solo
“I think I can handle it myself,” Rey muttered out of pure instinct, but instantly felt guilty the moment the words left her lips - she knew Ben was just trying to help. “But thank you,” She added quickly, peering over at him and offering him a gentle smile. “If you could just hand me that wire over there - “

Ben was shaken, completely unsettled by the fact that she could hear his voice. His lips pressed together and then parted once more. Seeing her experience such anguish wasn’t something he’d ever wanted. He just wanted to comfort her, to let her know that even if she isolated herself and hid her feelings from those she loved that she still wasn’t alone. How could he say nothing? How could he just bear witness to something as heartbreaking as a girl full of light sinking into sand, tears pouring down hot cheeks? Watching as she looked around, he breathed out, feeling useless. He leaned back on his knees, watching her above him. He didn’t say anything for a moment, wondering if he’d made the wrong decision in saying more.
There was no taking it back. He’d spoken, he couldn’t stop speaking, as selfish as it felt to respond when this was the last thing she needed. “I am. I think… I don’t know.” Ben wanted to comfort her, not leave her reeling with a million questions. Lifting himself from the sand, he pursed his lips, his expression becoming one of regret. “I don’t know how. To show myself, I mean. I don’t know if it’s possible. Maybe this is all more complicated than I thought.” He clenched his fists at his side, stepping close to her but knowing that even if he reached out, she wouldn’t feel him.
“I can see you.” He answered quietly, already second guessing his instinct to tell her the truth, always. This truth was painful, he shouldn’t have been burdening her with it. “I can just see you, your surroundings. I’m… I don’t know what I am, but it doesn’t matter.” Ben replied firmly. He had to stop this, before she held on to hope that she shouldn’t, before she got ahead of herself in thinking that he wasn’t still gone. He was sure he was, even if it wasn’t in a way he understood. “I didn’t know that you could hear me, I’ve just… been watching. I’m here with you, but I know you can’t see me.”
There was a brief moment of silence, and Rey shuddered to herself, convinced that this was just a very vivid, cruel hallucination. Perhaps it was the heat; she’d been away from the desert for so long now that being back was an adjustment, as strange as the thought was. Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she was nearly about to shake her head and dismiss the entire thing - until she heard his voice again.
She’d had visions of him before, but never like this. They were quite often in her dreams rather than when she was awake, but never had his voice been so clear, never had she been able to grasp onto the sound of it for longer than a few seconds at a time. This was...something else. It had to be. Rey glanced around desperately for the third time, hoping, if anything, that she’d see his force ghost waiting there for her. As painful as it would be to see him like that, it might have been even more painful to hear him without seeing him at all.
He didn’t...know how to show himself...he was there, but...invisible? This was all so confusing to her, as although she’d studied a few different force theories, nothing had quite explained this. But the more he spoke, the more desperate she became, gasping at the sound of the voice that she’d missed so terribly. How dare the force taunt her like this, to only give her part of him, to not let her see him. But he could see her - Rey inhaled sharply at this spectacle, listening further as he went on. Ben had been there. For how long, she wasn’t sure, but he’d been watching her for at least some time. He had just now chosen to speak.
“You mean - “ Rey struggled to find the words, tears still brimming her eyes as she tried to decide what to focus her eyes on, finally deciding on the sand beneath her feet. “Y-You’ve been watching me...never saying anything...f-for how long?” It broke her heart all over again that this was suddenly their new reality, but at the same time, knowing that he was somehow still there - where, she wasn’t sure, but present - it gave her hope. In fact, it didn’t take long for her tears to dry as she stiffened, crossing her arms firmly over her chest. “You’re not dead, Ben! You’re alive, somehow, somewhere, a-and we...there has to be a way to get you back!” Her determination was quickly returning, and she began sprinting back towards the Falcon without a second thought, assuming that he’d still be with her wherever she went. “I’ve got to research this, as soon as possible!”
The moment Rey reached the hut she had felt him near her, in the Force. The connection between them was so raw and powerful that it reminded her of touching a live wire in the wreckage of a starship. She closed her eyes, opened them, and found Kylo Ren there – right next to her where she sat on the stone bench. As if she could actually reach out - The Last Jedi by Jason Fry

Keeping track of time was difficult wherever he was. He didn’t know where he was and that was frustrating for him, he had accepted death so readily for her. He couldn’t live without her and she deserved her life more than he ever did. He had let go of all of his bitterness, the past he’d been yelling at her to let go of. Ben had thought that he’d done the very thing that would complete his journey as a Jedi. Wouldn’t it be his destiny to save the scavenger? He couldn’t think of a more fitting life to trade his life for hers, to pass on his life through the force, to give whatever he could to feel her living and breathing again. The astonishment and joy in her face had been a reward he never knew he could receive and she’d given it so selflessly. It was a gift he would cherish as he passed on. She’d made him smile, too. A big, real smile, the kind he hadn’t given anyone in so long. She saw him, she had seen him for so long, down to his very core.
How funny that now she couldn’t see him at all. And he was stuck, following her around like a lost creature, unsure where to go. He’d tried to call out to his mother, to Luke, to anyone through the force but there was nothing but quiet. The galaxy kept on going without him and she was grieving and he just had to watch. What a cruel joke. The Force, not on his side, yet again. How original.
Watching her cry out in the desert alone felt too much. He just wanted to wrap his arms around her and tuck her head under his chin. He wanted to reassure her that she was strong, that she was better off without him, even. She was so strong, Ben knew that. It felt like there was nothing at all he could do, until she reacted to his voice and it had him sitting up stiffly, blinking for a moment. He was taken aback by how upset she grew. Surely she hadn’t…
“I’m sorry.” He let out a meek apology, but it would hardly help the situation. He still also wasn’t sure her reaction hadn’t been some sort of awful coincidence. Surely she couldn’t hear him. How had he never thought to say something to her? Clenching his jaw, he leaned down. “I’m here, Rey, I’m just… not here in the way you want me to be.” He said softly, his chest aching with sorrow for the girl he loved. He never wanted this. “Do you really hear me? I didn’t think I could… I didn’t…” This was so frustrating. Where was he?
Tears were streaming down her cheeks now, just when she thought she’d finally cried out everything she had in her. But no, the pain felt the same every time, if not worse, that she thought she heard him. Heavy sobs were escaping her, thankful that no one else was around to see her like this. In front of the Resistance, somehow she had managed to keep her composure, but whenever she was alone, she broke down. She was sick of it. Her fists kept clenching and unclenching sand between them, not knowing what else to hold onto in that moment.
But then she heard his voice again and she froze before choking out another sob, shaking her head quickly. “Stop! Please!” Rey cried out, but there was a small hope that she had that maybe, just maybe, it was really his voice. That it wasn’t only in her head. But how was that possible? He wasn’t physically here - she looked all around her, and Ben was nowhere to be found. It had to be her imagination.
Then she heard him again. A full sentence. Incredibly vivid. It couldn’t be...how? “Ben,” She breathed again, desperately, attempting to stand and searching all around her again with no success at finding him there. He said he was here. Somehow...he was here, speaking to her...he wasn’t a force ghost, but...maybe there was another way. “Ben, I...I really...I h-hear you, are you...a-are you really there?” Rey’s voice was nearly begging; wherever the voice was coming from, it needed to be him. “I hear you! I c-can’t see you but I can hear you and I need you - please, can you...can you show yourself somehow?!” Her tears were drying as she felt her determination growing, channeling her ache into willpower. “What do you see? C-Can you see me? Are you...a-alive?”
Just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to my Reylo fam today. Keeping things light, Reylo is canon. Rey and Ben love each other and no one can take that away from us. 💜💜 I love you all so much!!
Reylo Kiss (Conspiracy Edit)
He wasn't supposed to die, but Jar Jar killed him in the editing room. My clown instinct tells me so.
@Centennial_2 on Twitter pointed out how the kiss scene was edited all wrong (the hand placements are inconsistent, reversing Ben's fall shows that Rey is pulling him up, etc.), so I cut it all up and stitched it back together the way it's supposed to be. 🤡
Music: "Farewell" by John Williams, from TROS soundtrack (it's the same track as in the actual scene, just not the same part of it)
