The Wedding
Reduces their poverty and lack of social issues = joke
Tambu becomes very offended by Nyasha who calls her mother cute
Ma' Shangai has no choice but to marry Jeremiah
she has no control since it is a mans society
Tambu
Since she was born out of wedlock Babamukuru looks at Tambu as sin
- She is a product of a sin
Colonizers
claim everything is bad because they want the ruches and benefits of africa
education
religion
cultural traditoins
language
Babamukuru
His conflicts are
his reputation
responsibilities
Nyasha
He wants his wife and daughter to be educated for his own reputation
He needs them to stay in line for his own reputation
Everything is surrounds his reputation because if it becomes tainted he could lose his job and be sent back to the homestead.
Nyasha
Nyasha is the only one not pleased for Lucia when she gets a job because she noticies the ***** Institutionalized Gender Disparity*****
Lucia
conflict:
-poor and uneducated but she is life smart
-like Nyasha she rebels against tradition
Ma'Shangai
Conflict:
-wants succes for her children but not the lack of identity that comes with it
personally: poverty/lack of education
Maiguru
Conflict
- she has been to college ans earned her degree but she is stuck as the mother and wife
-she could do so much more than clean dishes and cook
Nyasha
Conflict
- educated in Uk and use to the english culture
- she is from zimbabwe culture
She is battling between two cultures
SETTING
Homestead- There is a middle hut/house that contains the husband, the first wife and their children. Then there are other houses/huts that surround the husbands house that contain his other wives and children.
The wealthier = the more wives
Jeremiah = not wealthy = one wife
IRONY
Pg. 155 - When Babamukuru is yelling at Nyasha for dressing and acting scandalous, he slaps her. The slap is to punish her for her skirt but it actually causes her skirt to rife up higher over her thigh.
Nyasha
-loose
-rebellious
-flirtatious
-careless
-cigarettes
Whta is the biggest difference between Nyasha from when she visited the family fromwhen she visited her house?
- she is stoic at the familys humble home and unconfortable
-she is not rude just unsicial and awkward
- she hurts Tambus feelings because hs eis not the girl Tambu use to have fun with
-england changed her
Nhamo needs a good slap around
He is :
very arrogant and rude
selfish
pigheaded
sexist
a putdown
He dies and Tambu doesnt mourn his death
He dies of mumps or for an unknown reason
Irony
An example of irony is how the brother and cousins go to the mission school to gain a better education but they come back with a loss of knowledge. for example they all come back not knowing how to speak Shona fluently. It is ironic because school is a place where you are suppose to expand you minds knowledge boundaries not make them smaller.
Imagery
On page 88 Tambu describes her newfound relationship between her and her uncle as a big bridge less crevice with jagged rocks at the bottom. After she realized her uncle was a lot wealthier than she thought Tambu felt more distant towards he uncle and also felt like she didn't know him. Almost saying "what else don't i know about you?'
Theme- Family Life/Hierarchy
In pages 48 -72 many relatives come to Tambu and her familys house. Tambu's job is to hold a bowl of water for relatives to wash their hands and feet. The catch is she must go in descending order of powerful relatives. (meaning: she must go for most powerful man first and keep going down the line). I don't understand how she is suppose to know and learn everyone and their rank. She makes the mistake of going to Babamukuru first because he is their life support and a huge source of their income so for Tambu Babamukuru is the most important.
