IT ALL STARTS on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Around lunchtime, Adapt walks into the kitchen, where you and Jason are talking, holding a phone.
“You guys have a problem.”
Nobody looks up. “What kind?” You say first.
“The internet kind.” That gets everyone’s attention. He places the phone on the island. A TikTok edit fills the screen, you and Jason.
The cooking stream. The airport vlog. Tiny moments stitched together. Slow-motion glances. No.1 Party Anthem by Arctic Monkeys. A caption: “they don’t even know they’re falling for each other.”
The video has twelve million views.
You blink. “…Twelve million?”
“That’s not even the biggest one,” Silky adds.
He opens Instagram. Then X. Then YouTube. Edits. Compilations. Reaction videos.
People analyzing body language. Comment sections filled with “theories”.
A fan has made a ten-minute video titled: “The Girl Next Door & Jason: Moments they forgot they were friends.”
You laugh. “…People have way too much free time.”
“They do,” Jason agrees. “…But this one’s kind of funny.”
You look over. “You watched it?”
“…Maybe.”
“You watched a ten-minute analysis?”
“I got curious.” The whole room bursts into laughter.
But jokes don’t stop there. Throughout the day, everyone in the house starts teasing both of you. Ron asks if they should put “reserved for Jason” on the passenger seat because you always end up sitting there.
Another points out that you’ve started making coffee for two without thinking. You immediately deny it.
Then realize…There are, in fact, two mugs sitting on the counter. “Oh…”
Laiys grins. “Interesting.”
“I made extra.”
“I’m sure.”
That afternoon, everyone decides to film a house challenge. Nothing complicated. Just a ridiculous scavenger hunt around Los Angeles.
Teams are picked randomly. You and Jason somehow don’t end up together.
Instead…You’re paired with Marlon. Jason notices. He doesn’t complain. He just quietly tosses Marlon the car keys. “You drive.”
Marlon nods. “Alright.”
The challenge itself is hilarious. You and Marlon spend half the time getting lost because the GPS sends you to the wrong location. He keeps making dry jokes that catch you off guard. You laugh more than you expected.
Across town, Jason and Adapt somehow finishes twenty minutes faster.
When everyone meets back at the house, he watches you and Marlon walking in still laughing about something.
It’s nothing, he knows it’s nothing. Still, he wonders what was so funny.
When everyone gets home and settles, everyone orders pizza. Boxes cover the dining table. The challenge footage plays on the TV.
One clip shows you laughing so hard you have to lean against Marlon’s shoulder for balance after he says something completely ridiculous.
The room laughs, Jason laughs too. But only because everyone else is.
Ron notices. Ron always notices. “You good?” As he bumps his shoulder.
Jason looks over, “Hm?”
“You’ve been quiet.”
“I’m tired.”
“You? Tired? Since when?”
“I can be tired.”
Ron narrows his eyes. “…Sure.”
Later that night, you find Jason sitting alone on the back porch. Not upset, just thinking. You sit beside him without saying anything.
He glances over. “You escaped.”
“Barely.” You sigh, “The house is loud.”
“When isn’t it?”
You laugh softly. “Fair.”
A comfortable silence settles between you. After a minute, you bump his shoulder lightly. “You okay?”
He looks out into the backyard. “…Yeah.”
“You sure? Cause you can talk to me you know.”
He nods, “I think…” He pauses. “…I’m still getting used to people caring this much.”
You understand exactly what he means. The edits. The comments. The expectations. Suddenly every interaction feels like someone is watching.
“I know.” You look down at your mug. “It kind of scares me.”
He nods once, “Me too.”
For the first time since you met, neither of you jokes your way out of the conversation. You simply sit there together. No cameras. Just two people trying to figure out how to live while millions of strangers think they already know the ending to their story.
Then, your phone starts buzzing. A new notification appears.
Trending: #JasonAndTheGirlNextDoor
You look at it. Then quietly lock your phone without opening it, putting it on do not disturb. Some things are better left unread.
It’s now the middle of the night, long after the house has gone quiet again, you’re halfway up the stairs when you hear your name. “Hey.”
You turn. Jason is standing at the bottom step, hands in his hoodie pocket, looking slightly more unsure than usual. “What’s up?”
He hesitates for a second, then exhales like he’s finally decided to just say it. “So… Halloween party’s coming up.”
You blink, “Oh yeah. I forgot about that.”
“I didn’t.”
That makes you smile a little. “Of course you didn’t.”
He shifts his weight. “People are doing matching costumes.”
Your heart does something annoyingly noticeable at the word matching. “…Yeah?”
Jason scratches the back of his neck. “So I was thinking…” He pauses again, like he’s annoyed at himself for being nervous. “Do you wanna match with me?”
For a second, you just stare at him. Then—“Oh my god.” He tenses slightly. And you immediately step down one stair, grinning. “I hoped you would ask.”
The tension in his shoulders drops instantly. “…Yeah?”
“Yeah.” You don’t even try to hide how happy you are about it.
“Okay, good. Because I was literally trying to think of a way to ask you without making it weird.”
“It would’ve been weird if you didn’t ask.”
“That’s not comforting.”
“It’s honest.”
He huffs a laugh. “Alright. So we’re doing this.”
“Obviously.”
“Any ideas?”
You lean against the railing, thinking. “Superheroes are easy. Everyone does superheroes.”
“True.”
“But we can do it better.”
Jason tilts his head, “Better how?”
You point at him. “You’re tall-ish. Dark hair. Annoyingly good at looking serious for no reason.”
“Thanks?”
“That was a compliment.”
“Debatable.”
You ignore him. “I’m thinking… Superman and Lois Lane.”
That makes him pause. “…That actually works.”
“Of course it does.” He looks at you for a second longer than necessary. “Who’s Superman?”
You gasp, “Excuse you?”
“I’m asking.”
“You’re Superman.”
“Why am I Superman?”
“Because I said so.”
He shakes his head, but he’s smiling now. “Fine. I’m Superman.”
“And I’m Lois Lane.”
“Why do you get to be Lois Lane?”
“Because I’m the journalist. I ask questions. I get into trouble. I make bad decisions and then somehow survive them.”
“That’s… accurate.”
“Thank you.”
He nods slowly, already thinking. “Okay. So we do classic versions or modern?”
“Classic is iconic.”
“Cape?”
“Obviously.”
“Glasses for you?”
“Obviously.”
He points at you, “You’re going to commit to this, aren’t you?”
“I always commit.”
“That’s what scares me.”
You grin. “You love it.”
He doesn’t deny it. Instead, he just says, “…We’re going to win best costume.”
“You’re already competitive about it?”
“I’m not competitive.” You raise an eyebrow. He sighs, “…I’m a little competitive.”
“Yeah, I know.” You start walking back up the stairs, then glance over your shoulder. “Also—”
“Yes ma’am?”
“I’m really glad you asked.”
He looks at you for a second, softer now. “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
A beat. Then he nods once. “Me too.”
And for the first time all day, the internet doesn’t matter. Just Halloween. Just the two of you planning something that, for once, feels like it belongs only to you.
❛ TRAINING WHEELS ❜ ✶ Marlon Garcia
𝐋OS ANGELES / ©𝓇hodemiu 𝟐026
✴︎ The internet’s favorite duo swears they’re just best friends.
You’re the daughter of one of Hollywood’s biggest names, a world-famous model with an effortless career, a sharp tongue, and a habit of stealing every room you walk into. Off camera, though, you’re guarded. Past relationships left you with walls too high for anyone to climb, and falling for your best friend was never part of the plan.
Especially not when that best friend is Marlon Garcia.
The boy who can make you laugh until your stomach hurts, who somehow knows exactly when you’re pretending to be okay, and who refuses to let your fear convince you that love is meant to end in heartbreak.
As the internet turns every shared glance into another dating rumor, the line between friendship and something more begins to disappear. But taking the next step means risking the one relationship neither of you can afford to lose.
Sometimes all it takes is someone willing to take the training wheels off first.

🥽/🍁 NOTE FROM VAL ✶ lmk how you feel about the story so far!! The Halloween party is coming soon and soo much drama so stay tuned 🙂↕️🙂↕️
The first morning of October.
You wake up to rain tapping against the bedroom window in the guest room.
Someone downstairs is already making breakfast. Someone else is yelling because another roommate stole their hoodie. Normal.
You walk downstairs wearing an oversized Core House hoodie and find everyone crowded around the kitchen island.
Jason looks up first. “Mornin’.”
“Morning.”
Ron immediately points at the hoodie. “…You gave her one already?”
Jason doesn’t even look up from pouring coffee. “She was cold.”
“Uh-huh.”
You hide a smile behind your mug.
The plan for the day is spontaneous. Lacy suggests a pumpkin patch. Adapt wants apple cider. Marlon insists on getting lost in a corn maze.
Within twenty minutes, seven people are piling into two cars. The drive is chaotic. Music too loud. People arguing over who gets aux.
Jason somehow ends up driving, you take the passenger seat. Not because anyone tells you to. It just… happens.
The conversation is easy. You point out mountains you’ve never seen before. He laughs because you’re amazed by things Californians barely notice. You tell him New York has better autumn.
He insists California wins because “our pumpkins have personality.”
“You can’t tell a pumpkin has personality.”
“You absolutely can.”
“That’s the dumbest thing you’ve said all week.”
“So far.”
The pumpkin patch feels like stepping into a movie. Hay bales. Apple cider. Children running through rows of pumpkins. The smell of cinnamon donuts floating through the air.
You disappear almost immediately. Not because you’re wandering off. Because you’re taking pictures of everything.
Jason quietly notices.
You stop to photograph tiny pumpkins. The leaves. A scarecrow that isn’t even particularly interesting.
“You really do love fall.”
You lower your camera. “A little.”
“A little?”
You gesture toward the entire farm. “…Okay, maybe more than a little.”
Everyone splits up. Some head toward the corn maze. Others start picking pumpkins.
Without really planning it…You and Jason end up walking together. The conversation drifts from favorite holidays to childhood memories. Halloween costumes. Family traditions. You discover he used to hate scary movies. He discovers you still carve pumpkins every October.
“You still do?”
“Every year.”
“You know we’re definitely doing that here.”
“We are now.”
Across the field, Marlon notices the two of you laughing together. He smiles to himself. Maybe he waited too long. Maybe not. He doesn’t say anything. Just keeps walking with the rest of the group.
Later, everyone gathers around picnic tables with hot cider. Someone pulls out a deck of cards. Another roommate starts recording behind-the-scenes clips.
Jason sits beside you without thinking. Halfway through the conversation, he quietly hands you the sleeve of his hoodie. You’d been absentmindedly rubbing your hands together because the air had turned colder. “You cold?”
“A little.”
“Take it.”
“I’m already wearing one of yours.”
“So?”
“You’ll freeze.”
“I’ll survive.”
You hesitate. Then slip your hands into the sleeves. “…Thanks.”
He just shrugs. No big speech. No dramatic moment. Just something he noticed before anyone else did.
That evening, everyone returns home exhausted. Pumpkins line the kitchen counter.
Someone immediately starts planning the Halloween party. Ideas are thrown around: “A haunted escape room.”
“No.”
“Murder mystery.”
“Too much work.”
“Costume contest.”
“Absolutely.”
You sit cross-legged on the living room floor, sketching pumpkin carving ideas while everyone argues.
Jason glances over. “You’ve already got a design?”
You nod. “I told you I take Halloween seriously.”
He laughs. “I owe you an apology.”
“For what?”
“I thought you were exaggerating.”
“I never exaggerate about fall.”
“I know.” He smiles. “I’ve figured that out.”
The night ends late that night. Most of the house has gone to bed.
You walk onto the back patio carrying two mugs of hot apple cider. Jason is already outside, sitting on the porch swing. Without asking, you hand him one.
He takes it. “Thanks.”
You sit beside him. Neither of you says much. The swing creaks gently beneath you. The air smells like rain and cinnamon.
Inside the house, everyone is still arguing over Halloween decorations. Outside, it’s quiet. Comfortable.
After a long silence, Jason glances over. “I think you’re ruining New York for me.”
You laugh softly. “How?”
“Now I want to see autumn there.”
“You should.”
Another pause. “And…” He looks out toward the backyard instead of at you. “I’m starting to understand why people call you the Girl Next Door.”
You smile into your mug. Neither of you says anything else. You don’t have to. Sometimes the best conversations are the ones that don’t need words.
The two of you watching the porch lights flicker on as the first October evening settles over the Core House.
CHAPTER FOUR: 𝒸ooking ℴn 𝓈tream.
🥽/🍁 SUMMARY ✶ You and Jason finally collab on stream.
🥽/🍁 DISCLAIMERS & WARNINGS ✶ slow-ish burn, fluff, jason already down bad, reader totally clueless half the time.
🥽/🍁 TAGLIST ✶ @httpjoints @i8wruby @whimsical-bubble33 @hollymurdock @sofloveswbb @leahbeahhh
🥽/🍁 NOTE FROM VAL ✶ im in the makes of a jobe bellingham series ill probably upload tomorrow. or i may post an adapt series lowkey.. also i apologize in advance for this chapter, its kinda choppy and lazy 😪😪
By Saturday afternoon, the Core House was louder than usual.
Adapt had music blasting from a speaker in the backyard. Lacy and Ron were arguing over whose turn it was to take the trash out like it was a life-or-death situation. A basketball thudded upstairs before Silky yelled, “If you break the TV again, you’re paying for it!”
You sat on one of the kitchen stools, coffee in hand, watching everything unfold like controlled chaos you were slowly being absorbed into.
It had only been two days. And yet somehow, it already felt… dangerously familiar. Not home. Not yet.
But close enough that you’d stopped asking before opening cabinets—and started judging what was inside them.
Jason walked into the kitchen carrying a camera in one hand and a grocery bag in the other. “There she is.”
You looked up over your mug, “Took you long enough.”
“I had to improvise.”
“You texted me saying you had a plan.”
“I did.”
“And?”
“I abandoned it in aisle three.”
You laughed, sliding off the stool to help him unpack. “You realize this is exactly why I offered to make the list.”
“I know.”
“And you ignored me.”
“I wanted to see what you’d do when I didn’t listen.”
You raised a brow. “So you wanted chaos.”
“I wanted content.”
“That’s the same thing in your world.”
“Exactly.” He said it like it was a compliment.
An hour later, two cameras were set up around the kitchen. One facing the stove. One capturing the island—and, unfortunately for Jason, his entire existence.
You adjusted your mic while he leaned in beside you, way too close for someone who claimed to be “just filming.”
The stream went live. The viewer count shot up almost instantly, you both couldn’t even read chat properly.
“Oh—” You glanced at the screen. “…That’s a lot of people.”
Jason leaned over your shoulder, his voice low. “I was hoping you wouldn’t notice that part.”
“You expected this?”
“I expected… less judgment in the first ten seconds.”
“You have no poker face.”
“I don’t play poker.”
“You’d lose immediately.”
He pointed at the counter. “Okay, chef. What are we making?”
“Vodka pasta.”
He blinked. “…Where’s the vodka?”
You stared at him, “Please tell me you’re joking.”
“What?”
“You don’t actually drink it.”
“You literally cook it.”
“You cook it out.”
“Oh.”
A pause. “…That makes so much more sense.”
The chat exploded.
he’s so lost 😭
she’s already done with him LMAO
this is flirting right??
You glanced at the screen and smirked. “I now understand why your roommates banned you from the kitchen.”
“I’ve cooked before.”
“When?”
“…There was grilled cheese.”
“That’s not cooking.”
“It involved heat.”
“And smoke alarms.”
“Details.”
You handed him an onion, “Dice this.”
“Easy.” He took the knife confidently. Too confidently.
“…Jason.”
“What?”
“You’re holding it like you’re about to fight someone.”
“I am fighting the onion.”
“That’s not how this works.”
He leaned closer, lowering his voice like it was a secret. “You’re just intimidated by my technique.”
“I’m terrified, actually.”
The chat immediately caught it.
the tension is insane rn
why are they flirting over onions
I ship it already
Five minutes later, the onion looked like it had survived three different disasters. You stared at the cutting board, then at him. “…It’s kind of impressive how inconsistent these are.”
“Thank you.”
“That wasn’t a compliment.”
“I’m taking it as one.”
Things only escalated from there.
He almost poured cream on the counter instead of the pan. Reached for paprika like it was a life decision. Nearly grabbed powdered sugar. “You keep sugar next to spices?”
“Don’t judge my system.”
“There is no system.”
“There is emotional organization.”
“That’s not a thing.”
“It is in my world.”
You bumped his shoulder lightly as you reached past him. “You’re distracting.”
“I’m distracting?”
“You’re standing too close.”
He didn’t move. “Am I?”
You looked up at him, “…Yes.”
A beat.
“…Do you want me to move?”
“No.” The word came out faster than you meant it to. The chat went feral.
OH???
DID SHE JUST SAY NO???
THIS IS NOT A COOKING STREAM ANYMORE
Jason’s mouth twitched like he was trying not to smile. “Noted.”
Halfway through, one of Adapt walked in, stopped. Looked at the chaos. Looked at both of you. “…Should I come back when you’re not… whatever this is?”
Jason didn’t even look away from you. “Probably.”
“Yeah,” you added, still focused on the pan.
Adapt slowly backed out. “Cool. Love this for you both.”
The door shut. The chat lost it.
Eventually, somehow, the sauce came together perfectly.
Jason leaned over the pot. “…Wait, it actually smells insane.”
You nudged him with your elbow. “I told you.”
“I thought you were bluffing.”
“I don’t bluff about food.”
“That’s kind of hot.”
You froze for half a second. “…Excuse me?”
He looked at you like he hadn’t realized he said it out loud. “…I meant—”
“Don’t fix it.”
The air shifted, just slightly. The kind of shift that made everything feel closer than it should.
Jason reached for a spoon and you caught his wrist immediately. “Hot.”
“I know.”
“You were absolutely about to burn your mouth.”
“I live dangerously.”
“You live stupidly.”
“Same thing.”
He didn’t pull away. Neither did you. The chat slowed, then exploded.
HELLO???
WHY ARE THEY HOLDING HANDS???
I’M INVESTED
He finally tasted it, his eyes widened. “…Okay.”
“What?”
“That’s actually unfairly good.”
“Unfairly?”
“I take back every doubt I had.”
“Good.”
He looked at you longer than necessary. “…You’re kind of annoying.”
“You’re kind of incompetent.”
“That’s fair.”
A pause. Neither of you moved. Too close, too aware.
Jason’s voice dropped, “…You’re also kind of—”
The kitchen door opened. “Yo, is there—”
Both of you stepped apart instantly. Ron walked in, grabbed a bowl, and left without another word. “…Never mind.”
the door closed, silence. Then laughter—soft, breathless, from both of you.
By the time the stream ended, the house smelled like comfort and chaos had finally agreed to coexist. People came and went. Compliments were thrown. Food disappeared faster than it should have.
And somehow, through all of it, you and Jason kept finding yourselves standing too close.
Later that night, the house finally quieted. A movie playing downstairs, soft music somewhere in the hallway.
You knocked lightly on Jason’s open door. “Can I come in?”
He looked up from his desk, “Of course.”
You stepped in, sitting on the edge of his bed like it was becoming a habit. The conversation started like it always did, easy.
Then—“Oh,” he said suddenly. “I forgot to tell you.”
“What?”
“The Halloween party.”
You perked up, “Right. That thing.”
“It’s kind of a big deal here.”
“Define big deal.”
“Costumes. Drama. Someone always shows up as something unhinged.”
“That sounds amazing.”
“It gets worse.”
“How?”
“People take it seriously.”
You laughed.
“That’s not a warning, that’s a promise.” He leaned back on his hands, watching you. “You’d be good at it.”
“At Halloween?”
“At winning it.”
You tilted your head. “Oh?”
“You’d definitely overthink your costume.”
“I don’t overthink things.”
“That’s a lie.”
“It’s not.”
“You’re overthinking this conversation right now.”
You opened your mouth, then closed it. “…Okay, maybe a little.”
He smiled. There it was again. That look. Like he already knew you better than he should. “You should do something bold,” he said.
“You first.”
“I am bold.”
“You are loud.”
“Same thing.”
You laughed softly. The room felt smaller than it had ten minutes ago.
Jason shifted slightly closer, “Hey.”
“Yeah?”
His voice dropped. “I—”
The door downstairs slammed. Footsteps. A voice calling for someone.
The moment shattered instantly. You both pulled back like nothing had happened. Like nothing almost had.
“…I should go,” you said quickly.
“Yeah,” he replied, a little too calm.
You stood, paused. You looked at him.
Neither of you spoke for a second too long. Then you turned and left.

September 19th
Your apartment is unusually quiet as you zip up your suitcase, double-check your camera batteries, and stare at your passport even though you’re flying domestic.
You’re not nervous about the collaboration. You’re nervous about meeting the person behind the screen.
The plane ride is long enough for you to overthink everything.
What if it’s awkward? What if you’re quieter in person than he expects? What if the internet has built this up so much that there’s no way reality can live up to it?
Los Angeles is warmer than New York. Palm trees replace maple trees. The air smells different.
You collect your suitcase and walk toward baggage claim, your airpods playing softly.
People move in every direction.
You spotted him before he spotted you. Black hoodie despite the California heat. Baseball cap pulled low. Phone in one hand, iced coffee in the other.
He looked up, recognition crossed his face almost instantly. A smile spread across it. “There she is.” You smiled back as you walked over. “You made it.”
“Barely. That flight was brutal.”
“I figured.”
He reached for your suitcase before you could protest. “I got it.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.” He shrugged, “But you’re my guest.”
You let go of the handle. “Thanks.”
There wasn’t an awkward pause. No standing there wondering whether to hug.
He simply nodded toward the parking garage. “C’mon. I’ve got a coffee place you need to try before everyone at the house starts yelling.”
“Is that a daily occurrence?”
“You’ll see.”
It’s the first time in weeks either of you has talked without thinking about clips or viewers.
He discovers you put cinnamon in almost every coffee. You discover he never finishes a drink before buying another one. He teases you for having three different bags.
You tease him for somehow losing his car keys while they’re still in his hand.
Conversation comes naturally. The kind where silence isn’t uncomfortable.
On the drive back, he points out random landmarks like a terrible tour guide. “That’s… a building.”
“Very informative.”
“I know my city.”
You snort, “I don’t think so.”
“You’ll see I’m right eventually.”
You spend more time laughing than talking.
Then after one long coffee run and uncontrollable traffic, you arrive at The Core House. The front door swings open before Jason even has a chance to unlock it.
“She’s here?”
Three people appear almost immediately. One introduces himself before another interrupts. Someone grabs your suitcase. Someone else asks if you’re hungry.
The house somehow manages to be louder than it looked online.
Then another roommate walks into the kitchen. Marlon. He’s quieter than everyone else. More laid-back.
He smiles. “So you’re the famous Girl Next Door.”
You laugh, “I don’t know about famous.”
“I’ve seen enough edits this week to think otherwise.”
That gets your first genuine laugh since arriving.
Jason notices. He doesn’t think much of it. At first.
Throughout the afternoon, Marlon keeps ending up wherever you are. Not in an obvious way. Just…If you’re making food, he happens to walk into the kitchen. If you’re looking at everyone’s streaming setups, he’s the one explaining where everything is.
He’s easy to talk to. Funny without trying. Comfortable. You don’t think anything of it, he’s just welcoming.
Jason notices it before anyone else does. Not because Marlon is flirting, Because Marlon keeps finding reasons to talk to you.
He catches himself watching another conversation from across the room.
You laugh at something Marlon says. Jason looks away almost immediately. It shouldn’t bother him. You’ve been in Los Angeles for less than two hours.
Marlon’s his friend. You’re not dating. You’re not even close. Still…The feeling sits there.
One roommate who you remember by the name of Ron nudges him. “You good?”
“Hm?”
“You’ve been staring at the wall for like a minute.”
“I wasn’t.”
“You literally were.”
Jason grabs his water bottle. “I’m getting something to drink.”
Ron watches him leave, “…Right.”
That evening, everyone decides to order takeout instead of filming. You all sit around the kitchen island eating tacos and telling embarrassing stories.
Jason spends half the night making everyone laugh. Ron and Lacy are arguing about a story Ron told that Lacy swore was his story. Silky is on the floor laughing, while Adapt looks like he wants to go back to bed. Marlon’s eyes somehow always drift toward your direction. You notice something, though.
Whenever conversation drifts toward you…Jason listens more than he talks. Like he’s genuinely interested. Not because there’s a camera, not because it’ll make good content, just because he wants to know you.
Later, after everyone heads upstairs, you step onto the back patio alone. The California air is warm. The city lights stretch for miles.
The door opens behind you. Jason walks out carrying two cans of sparkling water.
He hands you one. “You survived your first day.”
“Barely.”
He laughs, “You’ll fit in here.”
You glance toward the noise coming from inside the house. “I think…” A smile crosses your face. “I already kind of do.”
They sit on the back steps in comfortable silence, talking long after everyone else has gone to bed.
Just two strangers realizing that conversation has never felt this easy before.

Three days.
That was all it took for the internet to create a story that didn’t exist. One clip of Jason calling you pretty. One clip of you admitting he was hot.
Twenty seconds from each stream stitched together by thousands of edit accounts, all convinced they had discovered the internet’s next favorite duo.
It was everywhere. TikTok, Instagram Reels, X. Your entire For You Page had somehow become a cycle of the same videos.
Someone had already made a montage of your streams set to a The Beatles song that seemed to follow every slow-burn romance edit online. Another account had compared your apartment in New York to clips of The Core House in Los Angeles, captioning it: “golden retriever meets the girl next door.”
You rolled your eyes every time you saw one. You also watched almost every edit until the end. You’d never admit that to anyone, not even yourself.
Streaming hadn’t changed much. If anything, more people had started showing up. Some were genuinely interested in your content. Others were only curious because of the clips.
You tried not to think about it. The internet always found something new to obsess over. Soon enough, it’d move on.
At least…That’s what you kept telling yourself.
Across the country, The Core House looked exactly as it always did. Someone had left two pizza boxes on the kitchen island. A camera tripod leaned against the living room couch.
Music echoed faintly in an upstairs room while a video game played on one of the televisions no one was actually playing.
Jason sat at his desk with a hoodie pulled over his head, reacting to videos his viewers had sent throughout the week.
Every few minutes someone wandered into his room without knocking. One roommate stole a drink from his mini fridge. Another disappeared with his phone charger. He complained about both before immediately forgetting about it.
It was just another afternoon. Until his chat started saying your name again.
At first it was only a handful of messages. Then dozens. Then hundreds.
He sighed before he even looked at them. “…No way y’all are still on this bro.” The chat moved faster. He could already guess what they were saying.
DM HER
She said you’re attractive
She didn’t unfollow you
When’s the collab?
He laughed quietly, shaking his head. “You guys have way too much time on your hands.”
More messages flew by.
He leaned back in his chair. “I’m not just randomly messaging somebody because my chat wants me to.”
Someone yelled something unintelligible from the hallway. Without looking away from his monitor, he yelled back, “I’ll be there in a minute.” No response, just laughter.
He sighed. His attention drifted back to the screen. The comments hadn’t stopped. One after another.
Just ask if she wants to stream
Worst she can say is no
It’s just content 😂😂
He rubbed a hand over his face. “I swear, if I do this, it’s because a collab actually makes sense.”
He clicked over to Instagram. Your profile was already there. The cozy apartment. Nights out & baking with friends. Streamer university throwbacks. Pictures of your dogs.
The same soft, comfortable feeling your streams always had. Completely different from the constant noise surrounding him.
He stared at the message button for a few seconds. “…Should I?” His mouse hovered over it. The chat immediately sped up again. He laughed,“You know what? I’m not even reading chat.” Before he could overthink it, he clicked.
His fingers moved across the keyboard.
when we collabing?
He looked at it a minute longer before hitting send. “…Too late now.”
Back in New York, your apartment was unusually quiet. Rain tapped against your windows while you sat cross-legged on your bed with your laptop balanced in front of you.
You’d spent the afternoon editing a vlog from your latest sponsored trip, trying to decide whether a certain clip belonged in the final video.
Your phone buzzed against the comforter. Without thinking, you reached for it. The notification appeared across the top of your screen. Instagram.
Jasontheween sent you a message.
Your heart skipped. “…No way.” For a second you simply stared at the screen. You hadn’t expected him to actually message you. Not after the clip, not after following you. You unlocked your phone.
when we collabing?
A laugh escaped you before you realized it. You looked around your empty apartment as if someone else might be there to read it with you. “They were actually right…”
You typed back before you could second-guess yourself.
whenever you want.
you flying me out though?
You paused, a grin slowly spread across your face. You hit send.
Almost immediately…Typing. Your stomach tightened.
whatever it takes.
i’m kidding. what’d you have in mind?
i was thinking we grab coffee or dinner before we stream. probably less awkward than meeting on camera first
You read it twice. It felt normal. Not like two creators trying to manufacture content. Just two people figuring things out. Your fingers hovered over the keyboard.
i’d like that
You stared at the message for another second before pressing send. A minute later another notification appeared.
could i get your number?
The conversation never really stopped after that. Instagram became messages. Messages turned into exchanging playlists.
Playlists turned into late-night conversations about favorite movies, growing up on opposite sides of the country, embarrassing first jobs, and why neither of you could seem to keep houseplants alive. It was surprisingly easy, neither of you felt like you had to perform.
Two days later, another message arrived.
i think we should finally make this collab happen.
i was thinking the same thing.
A plane ticket from New York to Los Angeles appeared in your inbox less than an hour later.
You opened the confirmation email.
Departure: September 19th.
You leaned back against your pillows, unable to hide your smile. Outside, the first orange leaves drifted past your apartment window. For weeks, the internet had been trying to write your story for you.
They’d been wrong about almost everything. But for the first time…You wondered if they might have been right about one thing.
Maybe this really was just the beginning.
CHAPTER ONE: 𝓌ho’s jasontheween?
🥽/🍁 SUMMARY ✶ chat introduces you to jason after he reacts to one of your streams.
🥽/🍁 DISCLAIMERS & WARNINGS ✶ slow-ish burn, fluff, swearing, jason already down bad, reader totally clueless half the time. bolded sentences = chat.
🥽/🍁 NOTE FROM VAL ✶ hi everyone! thank you for all the support already 🥹🥹 my requests are currently open! also sorry if this is bad I promise it’ll get better i just hate writing the first chapter.
September had always been your favorite month. It was the beginning of everything you loved.
The air in New York finally started to cool after weeks of relentless summer heat. Leaves slowly exchanged their bright greens for burnt oranges and deep reds, cafés filled their chalkboard menus with pumpkin spice and apple cider.
You never saw the point in waiting until October.
By the first week of September, tiny ceramic pumpkins already lined your bookshelf. Warm fairy lights framed the windows overlooking the street below, casting a soft golden glow across your room long after the sun disappeared behind the skyline. A cinnamon chai candle burned on the corner of your desk, blending with the faint smell of coffee you’d made hours earlier.
It wasn’t elaborate, just lived in. Comfortable. The kind of room people watched your streams for.
Millions of people knew you online as The Girl Next Door. Not because you tried to be, it was just who you were.
You streamed almost every evening from your apartment, whether you were baking with friends, wandering through bookstores, decorating for another season, or spending hours playing games while talking about absolutely everything with your viewers. There was never a character to play or an exaggerated personality to maintain.
People liked you because you felt real. Tonight’s stream was no different.
Until Dawn had been sitting untouched in your Steam library for almost a year, and after months of your viewers begging you to play it, you’d finally caved.
You were already regretting that decision.
The atmosphere of the game had you sitting noticeably straighter in your chair as your character cautiously walked through another dimly lit hallway. Every creak made you pause, every distant noise had you anticipating another jumpscare.
A loud bang echoed through your headset. You jumped hard enough to pull one ear of your headphones off. “…Nope.”
You laughed at yourself, rubbing your forehead. “I knew this game was going to be bad for me.”
The chat teased you like they always did, but you ignored most of it, trying to focus on the game again.
Another five minutes passed before your eyes caught something unusual.
One message. Then another. Then dozens more.
Who’s Jason?
Did you see Jasontheween’s stream?
He reacted to your baking video.
For a moment you thought it was another inside joke your viewers had made up while you were distracted by the game.
You paused. The music disappeared, replaced by the quiet hum of your apartment. “…Okay,” you said, leaning closer to your monitor. “What am I missing?”
Your moderators had already pinned a clip. Apparently while you’d been live, another creator—someone named Jason—had been watching your baking stream from the weekend before.
The one with Arky and Yonna. The recipe had gone completely off the rails before you’d even preheated the oven. Arky somehow managed to get flour on almost every surface in the kitchen, Yonna laughed through half the stream, and by the end the pumpkin muffins were slightly overbaked but surprisingly edible.
You clicked the clip as the video opened inside another livestream. Jason sat in a room that looked considerably louder than yours. Someone wandered through the background carrying a basketball before disappearing down another hallway, followed by distant laughter from somewhere else in the house.
He barely acknowledged any of it. Instead, he watched your baking stream with an amused smile.
When Arky accidentally spilled half the bag of flour across the counter, he laughed. When Yonna almost dropped the mixing bowl, he laughed again.
Then came the moment you’d expected. You appeared on screen holding up the finished muffins with an unnecessarily proud smile. “They’re a little burnt,” your past self admitted. “But… they still count.”
Jason smiled to himself. “I like her content.” It wasn’t loud or dramatic. Just a simple observation.
Someone off camera asked who he was watching.
“The baking girl.”
“The one everyone’s been talking about?”
“Yeah.” There was a brief silence before he shrugged. “I think she’s pretty.”
Almost immediately, his chat started going insane.
OMG
matter daddy
L rizz
He laughed, shaking his head. “You guys always do this.”
Another suggestion appeared.
FOLLOW HER!!
“Nah,” he replied casually. “I’m not going to randomly DM somebody because chat thinks it’d be funny.”
The clip ended there.
You blinked once before looking back at your own stream. “…Well.” You hadn’t expected that.
Your viewers, however, seemed much more invested than you were.
HE CALLED YOU CUTE BABE
omfg if you don’t dm him
dudes head over heels already
You laughed quietly, scrolling through the comments. “Who even is this guy?” Someone suggested looking at his Instagram. “…Sure.”
You typed his username into the search bar. The profile loaded almost instantly. Verified, a few million followers. You scrolled through a handful of photos.
Mostly travel. Friends. Streams. A couple of professional-looking pictures mixed in with blurry group selfies.
“…Okay.” You leaned back in your chair. “I’ll admit…” A smile found its way onto your face before you could stop it. “He’s actually really hot.” The sentence slipped out so casually you didn’t think twice about it.
Then you glanced back at chat. “…Don’t make it weird.” Unfortunately, that request lasted all of three seconds.
CLIP IT
CLIPPED
COLLABB
Within minutes, clips from both streams had already begun spreading across social media.
One showed Jason calling you pretty, another showed you absentmindedly admitting he was attractive. Neither clip lasted longer than twenty seconds. Together, they were everywhere.
You didn’t think much of it. People moved on quickly online. At least… They usually did.
By the time your stream ended, it was nearly midnight. You thanked everyone for hanging out, promised another stream later in the week, and clicked End Broadcast.
Silence settled over the apartment.
You stretched, tidied the empty coffee mug from your desk, and wandered into the bathroom to wash off the day’s makeup.
The rest of your nighttime routine came naturally. By the time you climbed into bed, rain had started tapping softly against the windows. You reached over to plug your phone into its charger.
The screen lit up. A notification from Instagram appeared across the top.
jasontheween started following you.
You stared at it for several seconds. “…Oh shit.”
You opened the app. It was real. Not a fan account, not a prank. Just one new follower.
Without thinking, a small smile crossed your face following him back.
Maybe your viewers hadn’t been exaggerating after all. You locked your phone, set it back on the nightstand, and turned off the lamp. Outside, the city was beginning to fall asleep.
Somewhere on the other side of the country, someone you’d never met had unknowingly become the last thought on your mind before you drifted off to sleep.
