A bunch of little drabbles for my pal iseetrajectories! Human verse, Pearlnet parents
Paint Me: I’ll write a drabble about my character drawing a picture of yours.
She had been sitting at the table for the better part of the afternoon, feet kicking back and forth where she sat in her chair. Her arms would move quickly to shield the paper she was coloring on from the view of anyone who dared come too close, a little glare on her face. It wasn’t finished, she insisted fervently. You did not ask an artist to see their work before they were ready to present it! Nyx shooed her mothers away and then returned to her drawing; you’d think it was the next Mona Lisa for the amount of concentration in the young child’s expression.
Finally Garnet could hear herself being called for, and the sound of little footsteps a moment later signaled that Nyx was entering the room. “Mama!” she said excitedly, and arms were waiting to pull her up and into Garnet’s lap. She settled in comfortably, finally relinquishing the paper that she was holding against her chest. “I drew you a picture.”
And indeed she had. Three figures were messily scribbled onto the paper, the lines shaky and the colors absolutely everywhere, but still somehow recognizable as Nyx and her mothers. Garnet was silent for several long moments, taking in every detail of the crude drawing.
“This is the best picture ever.”
Nyx smiled broadly, glowing with pride as Garnet hugged her. Yeah, it was the best picture ever. Just like all the other ones that lined every inch of their refrigerator.
Mistletoe: Our characters will share a kiss under the mistletoe.
“Mom, why did you hang up a plant?” Nyx asked, causing Pearl to look over with a questioning hum. She followed the child’s line of sight to the top of the doorway.
“Oh!” Nyx looked back when her mother stepped over and placed a hand on her shoulder. “That’s a mistletoe, Nyx.” She clicked her tongue. “I wasn’t going to put one up this year, but Amethyst insisted.”
“What’s it for?”
“Well, it’s a holiday tradition. If you and another person happen to stand beneath a mistletoe at the same time, you are supposed--”
“To kiss.” Garnet’s voice cut her off, and without warning she had wrapped an arm around Pearl’s waist and pulled her in for an example. Pearl blushed, and Sardonyx covered her eyes with an exasperated noise of protest at the display.
“Oh no, you’re not safe from this either, little one,” Garnet said when she saw Nyx turning away, and the child squeaked and made to run. But she had hardly made it two steps before her mother’s arms were scooping her up, trapping her against her body in an embrace.
“Noo..!” It was too late, Garnet was already covering her cheeks and nose with kisses. Try as she might to wiggle away, Nyx knew all was lost when Pearl joined in, sandwiching her in the middle of them. She complained loudly, but it was quick to melt away into a fit of giggles instead.
Well, she did like being at the center of attention.
Busted: Your character will catch mine doing something they shouldn’t.
“But mom--!”
“No.”
Nyx huffed and stomped after her mother, who didn’t show any signs of returning her very important magic show tool. “But this is the grande finale!”
“No.”
“But the talent show is next week! I can’t just end on a card trick, they’ll wipe the floor with me! And I already--”
“Sardonyx, no.” She came to a sudden stop when her mother did, and when Garnet lowered her glasses and fixed her with a familiar look, the rest of the child’s protests died instantly in her throat. Nyx crossed her arms and looked down, reluctantly muttering her agreement to drop the topic. Satisfied, Garnet turned back around to place the knife on top of the fridge.
“I know you want to win, but you are not allowed to cut Steven in half. Now go let him out of that box.”
Amuse Me: I will write a funny drabble about my character trying to cheer yours up.
“Mama?” Nyx’s voice seemed to jolt Garnet out of whatever distracted state she had been in, and she looked down at the child leaning against her leg. Her eyebrows were furrowed with concern. “Are you okay?”
Garnet tried to smile, but exhaustion was clear in her expression. “Mm. I’m fine, sweetie,” she mumbled, gently ruffling Nyx’s hair. “Was just a long day, that’s all.” Nyx was clearly not satisfied with that answer, but Garnet returned to drumming her fingers tiredly against the table and finally the young girl turned to walk away. She glanced back over her shoulder as she was about to enter her room, a determined expression coming over her before she entered it.
She needed her stuff.
A few minutes later and Nyx entered the room again, her entrance much harder to miss this time. She had added to her attire the magician’s hat and bow that her mothers had gotten her last Halloween, and with a broad smile she posed in front of Garnet as though she truly was on a stage.
“Good evening everybody!” the child announced. “This is the lovely Sardonyx, coming to you a-live from our new dining room location! How’re we doing tonight?”
It took a couple of card tricks, and a magical never-ending scarf that had been painstakingly hidden up her sleeve, but finally her mother was genuinely smiling again and Nyx felt her own grin brighten in response. She walked over when Garnet gestured her closer, getting herself scooped up into a tight hug that she happily returned.
“That was a wonderful performance,” her mom said, and Nyx felt lips press against her forehead. “Thank you.”
Shop: I’ll write a drabble of your character taking mine shopping.
“Hmm.” Garnet knelt down next to the stroller, immediately grabbing the attention of the curly haired baby inside. Nyx looked at her with a curious little babble, blinking when something was placed on her face and all of a sudden the world was tinted a different color.
“What d’ya think?” she asked, as though fully expecting the tiny baby to give a coherent response. Nyx turned her head as she looked around, but finally caught a glimpse of herself in the reflection of her mother’s sunglasses. The flashy, star shaped ones on her own face were far too big, but seeing her mom smiling at them made Nyx smile back. The child reached forward with a happy laugh, tiny hands grabbing at Garnet’s face.
Her mom grinned and chuckled. “Yeah, you look awesome,” she agreed, kissing her hands and then standing up to continue their shopping. Those glasses were absolutely coming home with them; it was a very important purchase.
Sleep: I’ll write a drabble of my character snuggling in bed with yours.
The room lit up with a flash of lightning, and a moment later a shuddering crack of thunder rumbled across the sky. Nyx flinched and buried her face in her mother’s chest, gripping the fabric of her shirt in response to the arms that circled protectively around her.
“Oh sweetie, it’s okay,” Pearl said, stroking the child’s hair. “It’s only thunder. I know it’s loud, but really it’s only air particles expanding!”
Nyx furrowed her brow and looked up at her other mom--the one currently holding her. “The sky is angry,” Garnet said simply. “It’ll calm down again in a little bit.”
Nyx lowered her head, muttering something about the stupid sky and it’s stupid temper tantrum before another loud break of thunder had her once again whimpering and clinging to Garnet. “Can I just sleep in here tonight..?” she asked, getting two voices readily agreeing in response. A pillow was placed in the middle of the bed for her, arms draping over her and hugging her close as the family settled in for the night.
The storm kept her up for awhile, her eyes snapping open each time there was a burst of light or a loud crash of noise. But the fingers in her hair and the comforting murmurs against her ears finally made her body relax, and her eyes opened lazier and lazier each time a roll of thunder interrupted her descent into sleep. In fact, by the end, when the darkness behind her eyes was weighing her down and swallowing up her thoughts, Nyx actually thought that the distant rumbling was somewhat...relaxing.
Morning came, and as promised the sky was calm again. The storm had not been as bad as she had thought...but that did not mean Nyx would not be crawling into bed with her moms the next couple of times one happened.
