Celebrating Yalda Night MONDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2015 Compiled By: Firouzeh Mirrazavi Deputy Editor of Iran Review Iranians around the world celebrate Yalda, which is one of the most ancient Persian festivals. The festival dates back to the time when a majority of Persians were followers of Zoroastrianism prior to the advent of Islam. On Yalda festival, Iranians celebrate the arrival of winter, the renewal of the sun and the victory of light over darkness. Considered the longest night of the year, Yalda eve is the night when ancient Iranians celebrated the birth of Mithra, the goddess of light. Yalda, which means birth, is a Syriac word imported into the Persian language. It is also referred to as Shab-e Chelleh, a celebration of winter solstice on December 21--the last night of fall and the longest night of the year. Ancient Persians believed that evil forces were dominant on the longest night of the year and that the next day belonged to the Lord of Wisdom, Ahura Mazda. In addition to Iran, Central Asian countries such as Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and some Caucasian states such as Azerbaijan and Armenia share the same tradition and celebrate Yalda Night annually at this time of the year. On this night, family members get together (most often in the house of the eldest member) and stay awake all night long. Dried nuts, watermelon and pomegranate are served, as supplications to God for increasing his bounties, as well classic poetry and old mythologies are read aloud. Iranians believe those who begin winter by eating summer fruits would not fall ill during the cold season. Therefore, eating watermelons is one of the most important traditions in this night. Pomegranates, placed on top of a fruit basket, are reminders of the cycle of life--the rebirth and revival of generations. The purple outer covering of a pomegranate symbolizes birth or dawn, and their bright red seeds the glow of life. As days start lengthening, ancient Iranians believe that at the end of the first night of winter which coincides with December 21 this year, darkness is defeated by light and therefore they must celebrate the whole night. About Qanoon instrument Qanoon is a string instrument (wooden trapezoidal frame) played with two index fingers and two picks. It has similarities to harp in its style of playing. Qanoon was not a part of Iranian traditional music for a long time but in the last half century it has made a come-back. To play Qanoon instrument, place it on a desk which is slightly sloped towards the player. The longer base is leaning against the lower side, close to the player. The desk should be slightly higher than the chair the player is sitting in. Qanoon is used in the music of several countries such as Egypt, Turkey and Armenia and former Soviet Union countries and Iran of course. It comes in different shapes and hence is not really standardized. . What our Students say... I bought a Daf and trying to learn on my own by youtube videos, and it was nonproductive, cause those videos was random and maintain just a starting moments about how took the instrument and few basic tricks. When I trying to found a book with solid method about how to play in good tradition, and my searching haven’t any results, I am occasionally found RHYTHMITICA online academy. It was a big success, cause I can’t imagine that learning of that ancient instrument would be so simple by Skype. After 2 years I have a good level of playing on Daf, and started Tombak learning. I don’t want to stop, wanna play more and more to increase my drumming skills. All teachers of RHYTHMITICA online academy, big thanks you the way you are, culture haven’t borders with yours help!
