Tis the season for broken pipes, fried turkey fires, finding that disgusting patch of mold hidden behind your Christmas decorations, and pine scented kindling wrapped in 50 year old Christmas light...
Steps to Handle a Disaster in Your Home
What Do Homeowners Fear More Than the Deep Freeze? The Thaw.
Colorado is one of the best places in the United States, to see the seasons: Spring crocuses popping up through the snow; Summer sun shimmering on clear mountain lakes; Autumn colors burn through dark evergreens; Winter’s powder comes with squealing children wearing bright caps and scarves. Of course, Colorado also has a tendency to entertain all of these seasons, in one week. Case in point, recently, Coloradoans played in 70 degree weather on Friday, and six days later the thermostat reads -6 degrees as the day’s high. Aside from causing sunburn verses frostbite whiplash, these changes can haunt your home long after the thermostat has started to recover. Every time the external temperature drops below 20 degrees, a hard freeze, your pipes are at risk of freezing, thus breaking. Thanks to our friends at Denver Disaster, we can help save you from flooding, before the thaw.
First and foremost, know where your water main shutoff is located.
How do you know if there is a problem, before it is obvious there is a problem?
If you don’t have water flow to any portion of your house, you probably have a frozen pipe. Call a plumber, they can assess the damage. They will help you shut off your home’s water main, until after the freeze has been addressed. They will slowly thaw the pipe to see if it is broken; if not you will only be charged for thawing. However, if the pipe does have a break, they will be able to cut out the old and weld in the new, before water damage is caused to your home.
What do you do if you find a break, but luckily, it hasn’t started to leak yet?
If the pipe is broken, know where your main water shutoff valve is located. Main shutoff is usually located in two places: where the water service enters the property: this can only be shut off by your water department, municipality, or a plumber; or you can follow the main water line into the house, somewhere along the line, most likely in the basement or crawlspace, you should find a shutoff valve knob or handle. Turn off the water, and call your plumber.
What happens, in the worst case scenario, if you come home to find that with the thaw, your home is flooded?
Call a restoration company. If you haven’t done so already, they can shut off the water, and remediate the water damage. In quick succession, both you and the restoration company need to get in touch your homeowners’ insurance, where you can evaluate the loss and reclaim your life.

Why Stand on the Corner?
There is a public relations exercise that lays out the following scenarios for comparison: Imagine yourself sitting in your car, stressed out from a hard day of work, stuck in traffic, tensions high… Someone cuts you off, and drives slowly. Imagine your reaction. Now; imagine walking down the sidewalk, stressed out from a hard day, and someone steps up on the sidewalk in front of you, then starts walking slowly. In a huff you grumble, and the person in front of you turns around; you both stop for just a split second. They make eye contact, and smile apologetically. Imagine your reaction.
For most people, the reaction to the first scenario differs pretty greatly from the reaction to the second. What is the difference? We are social creatures… People actually like other people; sometimes, we just need to be reminded, with eye contact, a smile, or a wave. That is why I stand on the corner. From a business standpoint, my time and interaction are offered for free; but the immediate return on investment, in the honks, waves and smiles, is priceless. However, from a community marketing standpoint, the long-term return is even more valuable… There is a memorable face behind the storefront signage.
In the digital age, where social network marketing is incredibly important even though it’s impersonal, it is just as important to have a positive physical presence in the community; otherwise, the effort for interpersonal relationships with clientele is just a façade and comprehensive marketing is shallow and halfhearted.
If you have a small business, where you sell not only a service – but yourself, take a moment, shut down the internet, step outside and enjoy your view from the corner, and interact with your community. You won’t be sorry.
