The hiss from the bird-baby just seemed to emphasize how relevant his knowledge actually was right now....

He frowns softly in consideration at the mention of a castle in the distance.

".....I'd say we avoid the castle for now. We're basically 'invaders' to this land. Nobility usually doesn't like that. But! That does mean there ARE some sort of intelligent life on this planet. Lets go down to where that castle is and see if there are any towns or villages near by. Or even just a road. Roads lead to places with people, eventually." He reasons with a grin at his friend.

"You're the only one even doctor-like that I'd trust with them." Adara insisted. "I mean, could you imagine either of them with a regular pediatrician? Not to mention if we went to Earth--the govnernemt would be on us in no time!" Perhaps the flame woman should start considering the idea of really, really, good forged documents. She wasn't certain if they'd end up on Earth, but some birthcertificates would go a long way to ensuring they had some sort of protection.

...Did this planet require birth certificates? Did the babies have to get registered somewhere on Thra?

Oh, the places the flame woman's mind wandered.

"Okay, so...we go near the Castle, but not enough for anyone in the Castle to notice?" Adara pursed her lips in thought. "There...might be some trouble with that."

For about half a day, Adara lead her friend though dead trees and sparce underbrush. Dry vegitation--grasses somehow not shriveled by the three suns but...sucked dry? Like some sort of mini vampire--lots of mini vampires--had somehow taken to feasting on the plants...no, feasting on the whole land! Little, by little.

Yet Adara saw no such creatures capable of such things.

Eventually, parting a shriveled leaf out of the way, she gestured to the valley beyond. "Now, is that not a Castle?"

It was indeed; though not a Castle that could have been made by human hands. It stretched high above the valley, with towers jutting in odd directions. Like some gnarly, parody of a massive tree. Surrounded by a barren, cracked wasteland. Tendrils of what might have once been a river twisted around the building's edge: A dead moat.

"It's actually kind of beatiful...in an angry kind of way." She pointed the wastland surrounding the Castle. "Could you see anything being able to live in that?"

Yeah......Maj was definitely going to have to very quickly get a medical degree in the near future. Even trying to take the twins to an alien doctor would have a lot of caveats and factors against success....

He might have to look into the art of document forgery as well....

Majick would steadfastly follow Adara across the landscape. Taking in the destroyed environment with increasing concern - and curiosity - as they traveled.

And there it was again, that sensation of the energy around them being pulled along.

Their path through the drained foliage goes in the direction of this 'flow' he can sense. And his suspicions are confirmed when they get past the leaves and get a better view of the valley proper, and that castle.

Yep. That sure was a Castle. An Evil Castle. As impressive as it was wicked looking. Had 'Evil Wizard(s) Live Here' basically written all over it.

".....that place is the source of all this withering we're seeing....I can feel it."

He mutters to Adara quietly, brows furrowed lightly as he studied the alien design. Mouth turned down into a thoughtful frown.

"Let's definitely stay away from it."

Evening fell over a cozy, little house sitting alone in the snowy countryside. It wouldn't always be that way. In time, the house would be added to, and more of Adara's lost relatives and Carnivalle family would come to add their own homes to an eventual, peacefull neighborhood.

Though for now, for this first Christmas, it was just a small group.

"Okay, girls, I'm gonna turn on the lights. You ready?"

"Yaaaaaay!" A duo of unusual little children, who couldn't be much more than three years old, jumped in bubbly excitement. They were an odd pair: one long and lanky, four-armed and snouted, the other a little scratchy beaky thing.

A gentle, festive display of lights on a tree appeared in the living room window.

This Christmas, it would be just the three of them, and one more once their Uncle showed up.

Majick gives this understanding grimace to Adara's recounting of Mars' not liking that particular term of phrase. Such a sweet kid, with such a big heart. And tears.

He smiles as Adara's interaction with the bottle caused an effect, and he moves to pick it up.

"You'll see. I was actually going to start with this one, since this'll be the most simple attempt."

He splays a hand over the array of objects he's set on the table.

"All of these things need you do to something different to make them magical, my testing will see if you even can do each type of prep. That way, we can know what kind of stuff you can make and get paid for."

He explains with a grin, and holds out the bottle to Adara once more.

"Now, back to this. I want you to hold this and heat it up again. Full throttle, just a few seconds. It's okay, it'll absorb it all."

He instructs slowly.

The twins murmured and shifted in their sleep, lumpy pile of limbs and feathers.

Outside, the wind picked up. A snowstorm had been forecast for later this night, and the temperature was already dropping.

Adara took the bottle back. In times past, the flame woman would have slept outside in weather like this. Heck, she would have taken the oportunity for a private stroll, her body protected and hot from internal fires. She didn't need anything then. Except a good meal and a good time.

Instinctively, her eyes trailed to the babies' room. They were warm, safe, happy, and stable. For now, it was enough. But, they would need more.

"You sure? If I go all out, this might explode." She gripped the bottle in one hand. Concentrating, the glass began to glow a dull, cherry red. Quickly, it increased to a vibrant orange, then yellow, and on to white, before stopping at blue the color of daylight sky. It died down with the same speed, still intact.

"Trust me. I wouldn't tell you to do something so dangerous....while we stand in your own home."

The alchemist reassures her, flashing a large Rick grin as he did. Luckily for Adara, the Rick she knew could actually be trusted to make such promises. While the bottle heated up and changed colors, it did not explode. And within a few seconds of her being done, it was just lukewarm to the touch. As if she hadn't super heated the fuck out of it.

"Alright, it should be cool enough for me to take. Gimme."

Maj holds out his hands, fingers flexing excitedly as he did. When he's given the bottle, he holds it up.

"Now this, my dear, it what we can sell as Bottled Flames! An inferno's worth of literal fire power, all safely contained in a specially prepared vessel.~"

As he spoke, Maj's tone would take on an almost salesman like tone. A light preview of how he tended to sound when hawking wares to his more magically inclined customers. His grin grows slanted with the knowledge he was right that this attempt would work.

"Things like this are high ticket items!"

He elaborates further, tone returning to normal as he set the bottle down to the side.

He confirms with a hum. It was convenient to own a portal gun, after all.

"We'll definitely have to try with my own flames next. The fact that you did it the first time unintentionally is really....interesting."

He comments, eyes practically sparkling with calculating interest. Majick loved solving weird magical mysteries. He couldn't help himself.

"But before all of that, I wanna explore a little. Find some natives, if we can."

"That's good to know, because I'm definately gonna ask you to give these girls medical scans later." Adara paused. "Come to think of it, sorry to spring this on you, but would you object to being their doctor? I don't think anyone else would be able to handle their biology."

Yes, this was a big concept that the flame woman had only just begun to grasp: like anyone, the girls were going to need medical assistance from time to time. But...who on Earth could properly treat babies like this?

As if anticipating her future doctor's visits, little Moon hissed in her sleep.

"I've only seen wild critters in this area, and I explored a lot before the girls were born." Adara tore a rather large, thick leaf from a nearby tree, and wrapped it around her torso. With the twins tucked inside, it was not unlike a strap-on swaddle. "There is a huge castle pretty far off from here. I would have explored it, but I I didn't spot it until after I made the girl's crysalis. And, I didn't want to stay away from that very long."

Even all these years later, thinking back on the father...? Fathers? of the twins was still a trip to Majick. A being split in two, each half actually made more sense as half of a whole personality. But still so....alien.....

Comes the bright reply from the alchemist. One portal trip back to his place and then they're in Adara's dining area. Maj placing a few things on her kitchen table.

Adara pressed a curious finger to the snowglobe. "You really want me to try my fire magic on this?" She gulped contemplatively. "Come to think of it, I don't know how to infuse magic into anything. I'd mostly just melt the stuff you've brought."

After another thought, she pressed a finger to the little, red bottle. It glowed a brighter scarlet for a moment, before cooling. "Umm...I just heated that up. What do you get from that?"

Majick can't help some soft chuckles as Mars gained a new vocabulary word. And his poor friend had her new parent realization that her kids were inevitably going to learn all sorts of new things soon enough, including other swears, no matter what she did.

"Santa's just a figure from folk tales turned into a pop culture icon in this universe, as far as I can tell anyway. Parents are 'Santa' here."

The moment such a tiny young voice spoke up just to repeat a swear word that Majick hadn't even registered as 'bad' to say around kids, the alchemist failed to totally hold back his quiet laughter. The noise taking on an apologetic, sheepish tone at the end as he smiled at Adara.

Oops.

When the young mom would return from escorting her girl to the potty, it was a war between humor and contriteness.

"Heh, sorry about that. I'm more used to dealing with teenagers and older kids when I do run into any children.....I'll do my best to not introduce your kids to anything worse."

He agrees with a crooked grin.

Adara covered her mouth. "At least they learned it from you, instead of from a complete stranger." Her face suddenly turned panicked. "Oh, crap, they're gonna be starting school soon! Who knows what they'll come home saying, then!"

Flashes of the flame woman's own childhood among the Carnivalle entered her mind. Life on the road, it lead for a colorful childhood...and a chance to encounter coloful language. Her first forey into swearing country had come from Brother Jacksolm. And, Mama Fatime had promptly punneshed them both for it. That had been an example for everyone who lived within the Carnivale to keep things clean, but one can't always shield an impressionable young child from what is spoken by patrons...

"I sure hope Santa didn't hear that." She admited. And, carefully, craned her neck to peer into the twin's room, lest they hear something they shouldn't. "If...is there a Santa in this universe? Or, do we fake it, and put the gifts out while the kids are asleep? I prepared for both options."

Majick can't help some soft chuckles as Mars gained a new vocabulary word. And his poor friend had her new parent realization that her kids were inevitably going to learn all sorts of new things soon enough, including other swears, no matter what she did.

"Santa's just a figure from folk tales turned into a pop culture icon in this universe, as far as I can tell anyway. Parents are 'Santa' here."

Maj confirms, grin lopsided and highly amused.

"So I think learning 'shit' won't put the girls on the naughty list.~"

"Alright....this definitely seems to be the place...."

The alchemist muttered as he concentrated on the little hand held device he held. It sounding almost like a Geiger counter as he watched the read out on the display.

"The energy read outs here are insane..."

He walks around, careful to not step on any of the tiny odd creatures he saw running around...

Majick follows behind Adara, curious to see what she had to show him. And he wasn't disappointed. White hot fire. Bones to ash. And then - REBIRTH! First a cocoon and then a creature rising from literal ashes. Renewed. Reborn. With little left behind to show anything had died in the first place.

"..............reminds me a phoenix, honestly...but they do that as a natural part of their life cycle."

Majick mutters, rubbing his chin as he walked over and kicked at what little vanishing ash was left with the toe of his shoe.

"Even in all of my travels, that's the only time I've seen anything like this. The creature dies, their carcass spontaneously combusts, and from the resulting ash a new life can be formed."

He looked over to Adara, both intrigued and a bit lost.

".......some property of your fire seems to be compatible with the magic here to make this happen. I'm sort of curious to see if my own flames would cause the same thing...."

"...I hadn't even thought of the phoenix angle." The babies squirmed in their sleep; Adara held them closer. "I guess it makes sense. There was a time when I wondered if I was some kind of...human phoenix...thing. But, how do you find out without...dying? You know? I've never died before. At least, I don't think so."

Oh, the places your mind goes when trying to figure out magic. Just when Adara thought she'd given up trying to undersand her mysterious, fiery nature, she gets pulled right back in.

Idly, she patted Mars' head. "It wasn't like that when I made these two, either. After I twisted my hair and their Father's feather together, and set them on fire, the cocoon grew, but slower. And, bigger. And, it took a lot longer, like it was taking it's time making them." One of the babies yawned before settling back down to sleep. "Or course, I wasn't sure if I was just going to just get a couple of clones of myself and him, but I didn't really care."

"Mmmm, intent might have something to do with it as well.....or materials......."

Maj continues on, turning back to Adara as he rubbed his chin in further thought. Eyes idly drawn to watching the children as his mind wandered.

"It's too early for me to make a good hypothesis. I don't know all the variables.....yet."
